How KDP pays

How Amazon royalties are worked out

eBooks

Kindle eBooks earn a 35% or 70% royalty on the list price. The 70% rate is available only inside each marketplace's price band (US $2.99–$9.99) and deducts a delivery charge based on your file size, so a large, image-heavy book can earn more on the 35% plan.

Paperbacks and hardcovers

Print books earn 60% of the list price on Amazon, less the cost of printing each copy. Printing cost is a fixed amount plus a per-page charge that depends on ink (black & white, standard color or premium color) and trim size; short books are charged a flat rate. Expanded Distribution to other retailers pays 40% less printing.

Minimum list price

Amazon will not accept a list price below the point where your royalty would be negative, so the calculator shows the minimum price for your page count — and a warning when your price is below it.

US printing costs follow KDP's published schedule. Other marketplaces are approximated from the US figures, so treat them as an estimate and confirm in your KDP dashboard before setting a price.

The 70% plan deducts a delivery charge per megabyte of your file. For a large illustrated eBook at a low price, that charge can outweigh the higher percentage.

KDP treats a book as large trim if it is wider than 6.12 in (155 mm) or taller than 9 in (229 mm). Large trims cost more per page to print.

No. It estimates the royalty Amazon reports per sale before any tax withholding, and before returns or promotional discounts.
