Montana Book Publishing Services for Books Built on Real Ground

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers book publishing services in Montana to writers in Billings, Missoula and Bozeman: editing, covers and self-publishing. Packages start at $299, most titles take 4–8 weeks, and 100% of your rights and royalties stay yours. We work with Montana authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Montana manuscripts tend to be about work and land. Family historians enter the Missoula library's annual writing contest, Western history writers pitch the state historical society's press, and poets and novelists compete for the High Plains Book Awards in Billings. Ranch memoirs, guiding stories and homestead histories all need the same thing at the end: production that matches the subject.

Montana Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Montana's writing community is spread thin across a big map, but it is active, and much of it meets in libraries.

  • Montana Center for the Book. A program of Humanities Montana in Missoula and the state's Library of Congress affiliate. It runs Montana Reads/Montana Writes, Big Sky Reads and the Montana Poets Laureate program, and works with the Montana Conversations speakers bureau to reach rural libraries.
  • The Writers' Room, Missoula Writing Collaborative. Short workshops and classes for adult writers of every level, taught by professional writers and covering memoir, fiction, nature writing and poetry. The Collaborative grew out of a 1994 poetry reading and also places writers in rural and tribal schools.
  • Missoula Public Library Family History Writing Contest. The annual contest opens each October and runs into March, with cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25 for family history stories.
  • High Plains Book Awards, Billings. Founded in 2007 through the Billings Public Library board, the awards honor books about life on the High Plains. The yearly celebration brings author panels and a book sale to Billings Public Library. Authors or publishers can nominate a book for a $75 fee plus four reader copies, and nominations close each March.
  • Montana Arts Council Strategic Investment Grants. Artists can apply for up to $1,000 toward professional development, events or marketing for a publication, with a deadline on the 15th of every month.

Where we fit in: a workshop sharpens the draft and a book award or library event puts it in front of readers. Between those two moments we do the unglamorous part: the edit, the cover, the interior and the store listings.

Selling Your Book in Montana: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

No general sales tax. The Montana Department of Revenue states plainly that Montana does not have a general sales tax, so there is no state sales tax permit to get before a signing or a craft fair.

The resort-town exception. Communities designated as resort areas may levy a local resort tax of up to 3%. It covers lodging, restaurants, bars and destination recreation, plus "luxuries sold in the resort area." The Department does not run it; each resort community sets its own rules, so if you sell in one of those towns, ask the town office whether books count.

Online and out-of-state sales. With no Montana sales tax, there is no marketplace-facilitator collection on Montana orders. The Department does warn that Montana sellers shipping to buyers in sales-tax states such as South Dakota may have to collect that state's tax. The big online stores generally collect for those states on orders placed through them.

Federal, wherever you live. Your ISBN comes from Bowker and copyright goes through the U.S. Copyright Office. If you want a Library of Congress Control Number, request it before publication through the voluntary Preassigned Control Number program.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Check your situation with the Montana Department of Revenue, your town or an accountant.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Montana

Three models exist. Traditional publishers buy rights and cover costs but accept few books. Hybrid publishers charge authors and share royalties. Self-publishing services charge for the work while you keep the rights, the ISBN and the income.

Montana has two well-known traditional nonfiction houses in Helena. The Montana Historical Society Press takes book proposals on Montana, northern Plains and Rocky Mountain history through an online portal. Farcountry Press, a family-owned publisher for more than 45 years, considers proposals for Western photography, popular history, guidebooks and children's educational titles, but not fiction, poetry or memoir.

For anything else, compare services on three points: whose name is on the ISBN and store accounts, who receives the royalties, and whether the price is quoted in writing. Kinetic Digital Publishers works on the self-publishing side.

Distance Is Not a Limitation Any More

Being three hours from a city has no bearing on what your book can be. Every stage of our process runs remotely: editorial calls, cover reviews, proofs and approvals.

Print copies are made on demand, so there is no stock to store in the barn and no minimum print run to finance. Once the files are approved, distribution covers Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded channels, which means a book written on a ranch outside Miles City can be ordered by a reader in Seattle or Boston the same week.

Montana's Literary Heritage

Montana names a state poet laureate. On September 25, 2025, the governor appointed Allen Morris Jones of Bozeman for 2025–2027; he runs Bangtail Press and follows laureates such as Mark Gibbons and Chris La Tray. In his words, the state's writers, going back at least to Richard Hugo, "have taught us how to see the landscape and our history."

No state license exists, because Montana does not have a general sales tax. The exception is a designated resort community, which may charge a local resort tax of up to 3% on lodging, food, drinks and luxuries. If your signing is in one of those towns, ask the town office whether books are covered. This is general information, not tax advice.

Try the Writers' Room workshops run by the Missoula Writing Collaborative, which welcome adults of every experience level. Missoula Public Library runs a yearly family history writing contest, and in Billings the High Plains Book Awards fill the public library with author panels each fall. Humanities Montana's Center for the Book also lists statewide reading programs.

A few, mostly for nonfiction. The Montana Historical Society Press in Helena takes proposals on Montana, northern Plains and Rocky Mountain history. Farcountry Press, also in Helena, considers Western photography, popular history, guidebooks and children's educational books, but it does not publish fiction, poetry or memoir. Most novels and memoirs need an agent or a self-publishing route.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Montana authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Drafts, cover concepts and print proofs move online, so a writer in Kalispell or Great Falls never needs to travel to publish.

Yes, small ones. The Montana Arts Council's Strategic Investment Grants give artists up to $1,000 for professional development, events or marketing a publication, and applications are due on the 15th of each month. The Missoula Public Library's family history contest also pays cash prizes, though it is a contest rather than a grant.

Publishing packages start at $299. Your total depends on the edit, cover, interior, audiobook and marketing your book needs, not on your ZIP code.
