Iowa Book Publishing Services for Writers Who Take the Craft Seriously
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company working with authors since 2014, offers book publishing services in Iowa to writers in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport and beyond. Self-publishing with us keeps 100% of your rights and royalties in your name, packages start at $299, and most books are finished in 4–8 weeks. We work remotely from our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Iowa takes writing seriously: the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop was the first creative writing program in the country, and UNESCO named Iowa City a City of Literature in 2008. Our service also suits farmers in the nation's top corn, hog and egg state, insurance and finance professionals, and researchers at the three public universities.

Iowa Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Iowa writers have a statewide network of libraries, festivals and writing groups. Here is where to plug in.
- Iowa Center for the Book. Hosted by Ames Public Library since 2024 as the state's Library of Congress affiliate. It names Iowa's Great Reads for the National Book Festival; the 2026 children's pick, It's Corn Picking Time!, celebrates the state's farm heritage.
- Iowa Poetry Association. Statewide, it publishes Lyrical Iowa, a yearly anthology of 300 or more poems chosen through its competitions.
- SCBWI Iowa. Children's writers and illustrators get statewide conferences, local events and a directory of published members.
- Ames Public Library Author Fair. Local authors apply for a table; check the library calendar for the next fair.
- Des Moines Public Library. Greater Des Moines authors can submit self-published books for the collection; the library looks for Ingram or Baker & Taylor availability and professional reviews.
- Iowa City Book Festival. Run by the City of Literature each October.
- Beaverdale Books , Des Moines. Open since 2006, it hosts author events, local author fairs twice a year and the free DSM Book Festival (April 10, 2027), and runs a consignment program Iowa authors can join.
- Prairie Lights Books , Iowa City. Opened in May 1978 at 15 S. Dubuque St and known for its reading series.
- Iowa Arts Council. Individual artists can apply for the Iowa Artist Fellowship and the Artist Professional Development Grant (open to Iowa artists 18 and over).
Where we fit in: Iowa's workshops sharpen the writing. We handle what comes after: copyediting, design, ISBN and the store listings.
Selling Your Book in Iowa: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
6% plus a local option. The Iowa Department of Revenue sets the state sales tax at 6%, and most local jurisdictions add a 1% local option tax. Some cities and rural areas do not have it, so check the location.
Craft shows and book fairs. Iowa stopped issuing temporary permits on July 1, 2016. If you sell at events, you need a permanent sales tax permit, which is free and can be issued in as little as one business day through GovConnectIowa (paper form 78-005). At each event you give the sponsor your name, address and permit number. Sponsors must register the event and can be held responsible for uncollected tax if they do not get that vendor information.
Online stores. Since 2019, marketplace facilitators with $100,000 or more in Iowa sales have collected state and local option sales tax on the sales they handle.
Federal, not state. Get your ISBN from Bowker (the U.S. ISBN agency) and register copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office. You can also request an optional Library of Congress Control Number before publication.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Iowa
Know the three models. A traditional press pays you and holds the publishing rights. A self-publishing service is paid by you, and the rights stay yours. A hybrid charges you and also takes part of the income.
The University of Iowa Press in Iowa City takes proposals by email only, for literary fiction, general nonfiction and its other subject areas, and runs the Iowa Poetry Prize. Ice Cube Press, an independent publisher established in 1991, says it is not taking submissions and is busy through 2026 into 2027.
Before you sign with book publishers in Iowa, confirm three things: the ISBN and store accounts are in your name, royalties are paid to you, and the price is in writing. With our self-publishing service, the ISBN and store accounts are set up in your name and royalties are paid directly to you.
Good Writing Deserves an Editor, Not a Rewriter
When a manuscript is already strong, the risk is an edit that files the voice off it. Our editors work the other way: they query rather than overwrite, and they explain their reasoning so you can accept or decline each change.
Structural notes come first and separately, so you can settle the big questions before anyone touches a sentence. Copyediting and a final proofread follow, then production: a cover designed for the category, typeset interiors, print and ebook files.
Writers who have workshopped their pages usually know what they want the book to be. Our job is to protect that intent, ask good questions where something is unclear, and get the finished book into readers' hands.

Iowa's Literary Heritage
Founded in 1936, the Iowa Writers' Workshop was the first creative writing program in the United States. Downtown Iowa City's Literary Walk now honors 89 authors in bronze. In Burr Oak, the Masters Hotel at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park & Museum is the only childhood home of Wilder that remains on its original site.

My experience with Kinetic Digital Publishers has been rewarding. This has especially been so with Dexter Mason, a unique talented individual who I feel is one of the many reasons this company has an A rating. He is passionate at what he does, customer focused and friendly. Hats off to Dexter!

Still have questions?
Tell us about your manuscript and a publishing consultant will walk you through the details.
Talk to our teamIowa requires a sales tax permit for taxable sales, and it no longer issues temporary permits, so event sellers apply for a free permanent permit through GovConnectIowa and give each event sponsor their permit number. The rate is the 6% state tax plus any 1% local option tax where the event is held. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
Poets can join the Iowa Poetry Association and enter its Lyrical Iowa competition, and children's writers have SCBWI Iowa's conferences and events. For readers and fellow authors, try the Iowa City Book Festival each October, Ames Public Library's Author Fair in November, or the local author fairs Beaverdale Books holds twice a year in Des Moines.
Yes, within limits. The University of Iowa Press reviews emailed proposals, including literary fiction and general nonfiction, and runs the Iowa Poetry Prize. Ice Cube Press is closed to submissions through 2026 into 2027. If neither fits, self-publishing gets your book out on your own schedule.
No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Iowa authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. For a first conversation, call +1 (855) 209-8899.
Some will consider it. Des Moines Public Library accepts submissions from Greater Des Moines authors, looking for availability through Ingram or Baker & Taylor and for professional reviews rather than Amazon ratings. Our expanded print distribution puts your book in the catalogs libraries order from, which helps meet that first test.
Publishing packages start at $299 for Iowa authors, the same as everywhere we work.
