Wisconsin Book Publishing Services for Authors Who Want It Done Right
Kinetic Digital Publishers offers book publishing services in Wisconsin to authors in Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay. As a book publishing company working since 2014, we take care of editing, cover design, formatting and self-publishing setup, typically within 4–8 weeks for a standard book and from $299 per package. You keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and we serve Wisconsin authors from our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Wisconsin writers cover a lot of ground. The University of Wisconsin Press looks for literary fiction and for books set in the state or the Midwest, and the Wisconsin Historical Society Press wants lively Wisconsin history for general readers. Milwaukee's poets have Woodland Pattern, and the Jade Ring contest, run since 1949, has categories for fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

Wisconsin Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
From Milwaukee's poetry scene to Madison's free festival, Wisconsin writers have real places to grow.
- Wisconsin Center for the Book. The state's Library of Congress affiliate, a nonprofit tied to Woodland Pattern Book Center, sponsors public book events and runs the commission that picks a new Wisconsin Poet Laureate every two years.
- Wisconsin Writers Association. Founded in 1948, it holds workshops and events around the state, a fall conference, and the Jade Ring contest for fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Members can also post a writer profile on its site.
- Woodland Pattern Book Center. This poet- and artist-run Milwaukee nonprofit presents over 400 events a year, runs adult writing groups and workshops, and keeps about 25,000 poetry and small-press titles. It is moving from Riverwest to a new home in Bay View; check its site for the current address.
- Wisconsin Book Festival. Presented by Madison Public Library and its foundation, it offers free author events all year plus a four-day Fall Celebration, and partners with independent booksellers. Since its start in 2001, it has brought more than 3,500 authors to Madison.
A note on grants: the Wisconsin Arts Board funds nonprofit organizations through its main programs, so individual writers can't apply to them directly; its Folk Arts Apprenticeships are for traditional artists, storytellers among them. Poets can look at Woodland Pattern's Milwaukee Emerging Poet Fellowships; check the deadline on its site.
Where we fit in: these groups sharpen the writing. When the manuscript is ready, we handle the edit, the cover, the interior and the publishing setup, and you keep the accounts.
Selling Your Book in Wisconsin: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Rates. The Wisconsin Department of Revenue sets a 5% state sales tax. Seventy counties levy a county tax, generally 0.5% (Milwaukee County's is 0.9%), and since January 1, 2024 the city of Milwaukee adds its own 2% tax.
Book fairs and craft shows. Publication 228, Temporary Events, says you generally don't need a seller's permit if your taxable sales are under $2,000 in a calendar year or your sales are isolated and sporadic. Those sales are exempt as occasional sales, with tax paid instead when the copies for resale are bought. Once you hold, or need, a permit, the exemption no longer applies. Event operators report their vendors to the Department.
Online stores. Since October 1, 2018, Publication 201 has required remote sellers with more than $100,000 of annual sales into Wisconsin to collect the tax. Marketplace providers have collected it on the sales they facilitate since January 1, 2020, according to the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board.
Federal pieces. ISBNs come from Bowker (isbn.org), registration happens at the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number through the Preassigned Control Number program is optional.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Wisconsin
Book publishers in Wisconsin follow the same three models as everywhere else. A traditional press pays and chooses carefully. A hybrid publisher splits the expense with the author. A self-publishing service is hired for the work, and the book remains yours.
The University of Wisconsin Press in Madison publishes up to seven works of fiction a year. It reads a synopsis and the first 50 pages from July 1 to September 1 and from January 15 to March 15, and wants literary fiction or books set in Wisconsin or the Midwest, not romance, fantasy or young adult. The Wisconsin Historical Society Press takes proposals through an online form for history aimed at general readers.
Whatever route you take, settle three points before paying anyone: the ISBN and store accounts in your name, royalties paid directly to you, and an itemized written price. With us, the ISBN, the accounts and the royalties stay yours.
Done Once, Done Properly
The most expensive way to publish is to do it twice: formatting before editing, printing before proofing, launching before the listing is right.
We work in the order that prevents that, and you approve each stage before the next begins: structure, edit, proofread, design, typeset, publish.
That order matters most for the books that take the longest to make. A family farm or business history needs decisions about what belongs in the story and what goes in an appendix, plus an interior that handles photographs and documents. A cookbook or brewing book needs ingredients, quantities and steps formatted the same way on every page, in print and in the ebook.
From Milwaukee to Madison to Green Bay, the finished book goes out across Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution.

Wisconsin's Literary Heritage
The Jade Ring contest began in 1949. Kraft Foods founder James L. Kraft, a writer and jewelry maker himself, designed jade rings for the winners, and more than 1,000 writers entered stories, poems and plays the following year. Wisconsin also gave the world A Sand County Almanac: the Aldo Leopold Foundation in Baraboo keeps Leopold's Land Ethic alive.
