Missouri Book Publishing Services for Authors From Kansas City to the Ozarks

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company working since 2014 from its head office in Dallas, Texas, offers book publishing services in Missouri to self-publishing authors in Kansas City, St. Louis, Springfield and beyond. A book that needs standard editing, formatting and a cover is usually ready in 4–8 weeks, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and packages start at $299.

We work with you by phone and video call, or in person at the Dallas office. Missouri's writers come from very different places: poets and short-story writers polishing entries for the St. Louis Writers Guild contests, Kansas City storytellers who found their footing at the library's Story Center, and historians writing about Missouri towns, rivers and families.

Missouri Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

You don't have to write a book in Missouri alone. These are the groups and places we would point any author in the state to first.

  • Missouri Center for the Book. A program of Missouri Humanities and the state affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book since 2021. Each year it picks two Missouri titles for the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
  • Missouri Writers' Guild. Founded in 1915 and open to writers in every genre, with an annual conference, a yearly writing contest and chapters around the state.
  • St. Louis Writers Guild. Active since 1920. Its free Workshops for Writers meet on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon and are streamed on Zoom.
  • The Story Center at Mid-Continent Public Library. At 8900 NE Flintlock Road in Kansas City: a hybrid evening writing group, storytelling certificate programs, a Local Author Fair, free rooms and the library's own imprint, Woodneath Press.
  • Unbound Book Festival , Columbia. Brings nationally known authors to Columbia every April for talks and signings. The next edition is listed for April 15–18, 2027.
  • Skylark Bookshop , Columbia. This downtown shop on South 9th Street runs a consignment program for self-published authors who live within 50 miles of Columbia. Books need an ISBN and the title and author printed on the spine.

Grants: the Missouri Arts Council funds nonprofits, libraries, schools and universities. Individual writers are not eligible to apply, but a library or literary group you work with may be.

Where we fit in: these groups give you feedback, readers and a launch audience. We handle the editing, cover, interior and publishing setup, including the ISBN and spine text a shop like Skylark asks for.

Selling Your Book in Missouri: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Online orders. Missouri's marketplace facilitator rules took effect in January 2023, with a $100,000 yearly sales threshold. The Missouri Department of Revenue says a seller who sells only through a marketplace facilitator, such as a large online store, does not have to register or collect vendor's use tax on those sales.

Signings and book fairs. In-person sales are different. The Department says anyone "selling goods to a final consumer is required to collect and remit Missouri sales tax." If you aren't registered, contact the Department 3 to 4 weeks before the event and file Form 2643S, the Missouri Special Events Application.

The rate. The state sales tax is 4.225%, and cities, counties and some districts add local rates, so the total depends on where the table is set up. See the Missouri Department of Revenue sales and use tax page.

What stays federal. Moving to Missouri changes nothing about your ISBN (issued in the U.S. by Bowker), copyright registration (the U.S. Copyright Office) or the voluntary Library of Congress Control Number.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Missouri

Publishers in Missouri fall into three groups. Traditional and university presses pay you and keep control. Hybrid publishers share costs and royalties. Self-publishing services, like us, are paid for the work and leave every right with you.

Two university presses are worth knowing. The University of Missouri Press takes proposals by email for history, journalism and Missouri and Midwest studies, but not poetry, fiction or memoir. BkMk Press at UMKC is closed to open submissions for now and runs writing contests instead.

Before you hire anyone, check three things: who owns the ISBN and the store accounts, whether royalties are paid straight to you, and whether you get a written quote. If your book doesn't fit a press list, that's where we come in.

One Team From Manuscript to Release Day

A Missouri author often ends up with a Kansas City editor, a St. Louis cover designer and a cousin who "knows Amazon." Each one works from a different file, and the book suffers for it: a cover sized for the wrong page count, an interior that never saw the final edit.

We keep the whole job with one team. Your editor knows the trim size, your designer has read the book, and the person who uploads it has the approved final files. That matters when a date is fixed, such as a signing at a Columbia bookstore in April or a Local Author Fair table in Kansas City.

The finished book goes out on Amazon and the other major stores with the accounts in your name, so the sales records and royalties are yours from the first copy.

Missouri's Literary Heritage

Mark Twain's boyhood home in Hannibal was given to the city in 1912 and is now the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum. In Mansfield, Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the first four Little House books by hand in the Rock House on Rocky Ridge Farm. The 2026 Great Reads picks are Kate Klise's Stand Straight, Ella Kate and Gary R. Kremer's This Place of Promise .

Missouri's Department of Revenue says vendors selling to the public at special events need a Missouri sales tax license, because anyone selling goods to a final consumer must collect and remit sales tax. Contact the Department 3 to 4 weeks before the event and use Form 2643S. This is general information, not tax advice.

Start with the St. Louis Writers Guild's free monthly workshop, a Missouri Writers' Guild chapter or the hybrid writing group at the Story Center in Kansas City. Each spring the Unbound Book Festival in Columbia is a good place to meet readers and authors.

A few, with limits. The University of Missouri Press considers nonfiction proposals in history, journalism and Missouri and Midwest studies, but no fiction, poetry or memoir. BkMk Press at UMKC is not taking open submissions right now. For a novel or memoir, a literary agent or self-publishing is the usual route.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Missouri authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Not from the state arts agency for individuals. The Missouri Arts Council lists individuals among those who cannot apply, so its grants go to nonprofits, libraries, schools and universities. A library or literary nonprofit that partners with you may be able to apply for a project grant.

Our publishing packages start at $299, and the price for your book depends on how much editing, design and marketing it needs. Missouri authors can compare our publishing packages side by side, and our [full cost breakdown](/blogs/cost-of-publishing-a-book-in-2026-complete-breakdown) explains each line of a typical budget.

Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
