Oregon Book Publishing Services for Authors Who Care How It Is Made

Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company offering book publishing services in Oregon, from Portland and Salem to Eugene, and we have guided authors from manuscript to finished book since 2014. Editing, cover design, formatting and self-publishing setup usually take 4–8 weeks, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and publishing packages start at $299. We serve Oregon writers remotely from our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Oregon's writers cover a lot of ground. Willamette Writers serves novelists, memoirists and screenwriters. Oregon State University Press looks for Pacific Northwest history, environmental writing and food and wine. Multnomah County Library collects self-published fiction and memoir from local authors. We work with writers from each of these groups by phone and video call.

Oregon Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Oregon offers writers real support, from monthly meetups to a library that buys local e-books.

  • Oregon Center for the Book. The state's Library of Congress affiliate is a program of the Oregon Talking Book and Braille Library at the State Library of Oregon in Salem. It promotes books, reading, literacy, authors and Oregon's literary heritage.
  • Willamette Writers. The largest writers' organization in the Pacific Northwest reaches more than 6,000 writers. Its Portland members still meet on the first Tuesday of every month, and it runs an annual conference and workshops.
  • Library Writers Project, Multnomah County Library. Every May, local authors can submit a self-published e-book released through Kobo Writing Life or Draft2Digital. Two staff members review each one, and the best are added to the library's Libby and OverDrive collection.
  • Portland Book Festival. Literary Arts' festival, which began as Wordstock in 2005, runs each fall, with its biggest day around the South Park Blocks.
  • Oregon Literary Fellowships. Literary Arts' fellowships ($3,500 each in the 2025 cycle) go to writers who are full-time Oregon residents when they apply and when the award is made.
  • Annie Bloom's Books. This Multnomah Village shop at 7834 SW Capitol Hwy lists author readings and a monthly book club on its events calendar.

A note on grants: individual writers can apply to the Oregon Arts Commission. Its Career Opportunity Grants of $500 to $2,000 are open to arts practitioners in every discipline who have lived in Oregon for at least 12 months.

Where we fit in: these groups bring feedback, readers and a launch audience. We do the editing, cover, interior and publishing setup, including e-book files on Kobo or Draft2Digital if you want to enter the Library Writers Project.

Selling Your Book in Oregon: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

No general sales tax in Oregon. The Oregon Department of Revenue states that Oregon "doesn't have a general sales or use/transaction tax." So there is no state sales-tax permit for a signing table, and no marketplace-facilitator rule on Oregon orders.

Shipping to other states. The same page notes that the 2018 Wayfair decision affects Oregon businesses selling online to buyers in sales-tax states, so signed copies sold from your own website may fall under those states' rules once you meet their requirements.

City rules at events. Cities set their own business taxes. In Portland, the Revenue Division lists a Temporary Business License for anyone running a display booth in a permanent structure for fewer than 14 days in a tax year. Ask the host city.

ISBN and copyright are federal. ISBNs come from Bowker (isbn.org), copyright registration goes through the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional through the Preassigned Control Number program.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Oregon

Book publishers in Oregon fall into three groups. Traditional presses pay to publish and choose very few books. Hybrid publishers charge the author and share the risk. Self-publishing services, like us, charge for the work while you stay the publisher.

Two Oregon presses take direct submissions. Oregon State University Press in Corvallis takes emailed proposals on Pacific Northwest history, the environment, Indigenous studies, memoir and food and wine, but no fiction or poetry. Ooligan Press, the student-run press at Portland State University, takes queries through Submittable, reading nonfiction in fall and fiction in spring.

Whoever you hire, get three answers in writing first. Whose name is on the ISBN and the store accounts? Do royalties land in your bank account or theirs? Is there a quote that lists every service? With us, the ISBN and accounts are yours and royalties go straight to you.

Design Decisions, Not Design Defaults

Many self-published books look homemade for one reason: nobody chose anything. Default type, default margins and a stock cover are choices too, just unmade ones.

We make them with you. Trim size, typeface and leading, margins, running heads and cover direction are agreed before typesetting, and you see a sample interior spread and cover options with the reasoning attached.

That matters for the work Oregon writers are known for. Poetry collections lose their line breaks and indents in careless e-book conversion, so we build those files and test them on real devices. Food and wine books need recipes that stay readable in print and on a phone.

From Portland to Eugene to Bend, the finished book goes out across Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution, with your rights and royalties intact.

Oregon's Literary Heritage

Beverly Cleary set many scenes of her children's books around Grant Park in Portland. In 1991, teachers, librarians and business people formed the Friends of Henry & Ramona to fund the Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden for Children there. Portland artist Lee Hunt cast life-size bronzes of Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins and Ribsy, and granite plaques carry the titles of the Cleary books set in Portland, with a map of the neighborhood.

Not a state one. The Oregon Department of Revenue says Oregon has no general sales or use tax, so there is no state sales tax license. Cities have their own rules: Portland lists a Temporary Business License for display booths run fewer than 14 days a year. Check with the city hosting your signing. This is general information, not tax advice.

Willamette Writers is the easiest start: its Portland members meet on the first Tuesday of every month, and it holds an annual conference. Literary Arts runs the Portland Book Festival each November, and Annie Bloom's Books in Multnomah Village hosts readings and a monthly book club.

Yes, two take submissions without an agent. Oregon State University Press in Corvallis accepts nonfiction proposals by email but no fiction or poetry. Ooligan Press at Portland State University takes Pacific Northwest queries through Submittable but no memoirs right now. If neither fits, self-publishing keeps timing and rights with you.

Yes, and Multnomah County Library has a program built for it. Each May, its Library Writers Project accepts local fiction and memoir published as e-books through Kobo Writing Life or Draft2Digital, and staff add the best to the library's e-book collection. Expanded distribution also lets libraries order your print edition.
