Tennessee Book Publishing Services for Authors With an Audience Already

Looking for book publishing services in Tennessee? Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company in business since 2014, helps self-publishing authors in Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville finish their books. Most projects with standard editing, formatting and a cover take 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and our head office in Dallas, Texas, works with you by phone and video call.

A lot of Tennessee authors come to a book with people already listening: songwriters and session players with a career to tell, pastors with years of sermons, speakers and coaches with a mailing list. Others are writing about the mountains and music of East Tennessee or a family story they've carried for decades.

Tennessee Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Tennessee's literary scene runs from Memphis to the Smokies, and most of it is open to newcomers. These are the groups, festivals and shops we'd point a Tennessee author to first.

  • Humanities Tennessee. Its Chapter 16 publication covers Tennessee authors, literary news and readings and serves as the state's affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. It also runs the Tennessee Book Award and Young Writers' Workshops.
  • Southern Festival of Books , Nashville. Free, every October, around Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park and the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Check the festival site for this year's dates.
  • Knoxville Writers' Guild. Monthly programs, quarterly workshops and member writing groups, with readings at local venues such as The Hive Bookshop on Kingston Pike.
  • Chattanooga Writers' Guild. Writing groups, a gallery of members' books and a monthly contest series.
  • Memphis Public Libraries. Runs the Carnegie Writers Conference series.
  • Parnassus Books , Nashville. An independent bookstore with a packed author-event calendar, in store and at partner venues.

Grants: the Tennessee Arts Commission awards Individual Artist Fellowships of $5,000 in literary arts (fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry and children's or young adult literature). Applicants must be professional writers who have lived in Tennessee for three straight years.

Where we fit in: the guilds and festivals build your readership. We make sure the book you hand those readers is edited, designed and published properly.

Selling Your Book in Tennessee: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

The rate. Tennessee's general state rate is 7%, and local jurisdictions add their own rate of up to 2.75%. Rates and registration are on the Tennessee Department of Revenue sales and use tax page.

Festivals and signings. The Department's Sales and Use Tax Manual (August 2026) has a section on special events. If you collect sales tax, you must send it in, with the special event return due on the 20th of the following month. You may not have to collect at all if you paid tax when you bought the copies and you either average under $4,800 in sales a year or sell at only one or two temporary events a year with no ongoing retail business.

Online stores. Since October 1, 2020, marketplace facilitators with more than $100,000 in Tennessee sales over the previous 12 months collect the tax for their sellers. An out-of-state author who sells only through such a marketplace does not have to register.

Not a state matter. ISBNs (Bowker), copyright registration and an optional Library of Congress Control Number are handled federally, wherever in Tennessee you write.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Tennessee

Know the three paths first. Traditional and university presses acquire your rights. Hybrid publishers take a fee and a royalty share. A self-publishing service is paid for its work while you own the book outright.

The University of Tennessee Press in Knoxville lists acquisitions editors for Tennessee and Appalachian studies, music, and children's books, memoir and true crime. Vanderbilt University Press in Nashville wants an emailed query and proposal and doesn't accept full manuscripts until it asks.

For a novel or a ministry book, a self-publishing service is often the faster route. Comparing self-publishing services in Tennessee? Check that the ISBN and store accounts are in your name, that royalties come straight to you, and that you get a written quote before you pay anything.

Do Not Spend an Audience on an Unfinished Book

An author who already has listeners, a congregation or a mailing list starts in a stronger position than almost any debut writer. That goodwill can be used once. A rushed book with typos and a weak cover spends it, and it rarely comes back.

So the production comes first: a structural edit where the book needs one, then a line edit and proofread, a cover designed against the books it will compete with, and proper typesetting for print and ebook.

Then we plan the launch around the people already waiting: the description, categories, keywords, pricing, review outreach and a posting plan you can actually keep up with between shows or Sunday services.

Tennessee's Literary Heritage

In Henning, the Alex Haley Museum and Interpretive Center preserves the boyhood home where Haley first heard the family stories behind Roots , which won a Pulitzer Prize after its 1976 publication. The state acquired the house in 1985. Today the Tennessee Book Award honors current writers; its 2026 fiction prize went to Kevin Wilson of Sewanee for Run for the Hills .

That turns on how much and how often you sell. Tennessee's tax manual says you may not need to collect if you paid tax on the copies and sell under $4,800 a year or at only one or two temporary events with no ongoing retail business. If you do collect tax, you must file it. Ask the Department of Revenue; this is not tax advice.

The Knoxville and Chattanooga writers' guilds both run regular programs, and Memphis Public Libraries hosts the Carnegie Writers Conference series. Every October, the free Southern Festival of Books in Nashville is the biggest gathering of authors and readers in the state.

University presses do, by proposal. The University of Tennessee Press has editors for Tennessee and Appalachian studies, music, memoir, true crime and children's books. Vanderbilt University Press takes emailed queries and proposals, not unsolicited full manuscripts.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Tennessee authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Yes. For a music memoir we shape a career into a story with a clear arc rather than a tour list. For ministry books we turn sermons and teaching notes into chapters a new reader can follow. Ghostwriting from interviews is available if you'd rather talk than type.

Tennessee authors can start with a $299 publishing package, and the final price follows the editing, design and marketing your book actually needs. Compare tiers on our publishing packages page, then check our [full cost breakdown](/blogs/cost-of-publishing-a-book-in-2026-complete-breakdown) before you set a budget.

Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
