Kinetic Digital Publishers · Maine
Maine Book Publishing Services for Books About Real Places
Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company offering book publishing services in Maine, with editing, cover design and self-publishing, to writers in Portland, Lewiston and Bangor. Working since 2014, we usually finish a standard manuscript in 4-8 weeks; packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work by phone and video, and you can meet us at our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Maine's writing scene is wide. Crime and mystery novelists have their own conference in Portland, children's book writers keep regional presses busy with submissions, and Portland names a poet laureate. Most of these books share one demand: the setting has to ring true, whether it is a working harbor, a mill town or an island in February.

Why Maine Authors Choose Kinetic Digital Publishers

Maine Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Good places to start:
- Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. Founded in 1975, the Portland-based alliance counts more than 1,700 writers, readers and literary professionals from all sixteen counties. It runs statewide workshops and the annual Maine Literary Awards.
- Maine Crime Wave. The alliance's conference for crime, mystery and thriller writers, held May 30 in 2026 at Mechanics' Hall in Portland.
- Maine Lit Fest. Free author conversations across the state, held every other fall in places such as Brunswick, Lewiston, Portland, Presque Isle and Waterville.
- Harriet P. Henry Center for the Book. Maine's Library of Congress Center for the Book affiliate, set up by the Maine Humanities Council in 1997. Its 2026 National Book Festival picks were The Islanders by Lewis Robinson and Monster Locker by Andrés Vera Martínez.
- Portland Public Library. The Riverton Branch hosts an Early Morning Writing Group, open to every experience level with no registration.
- South Portland Public Library Writers' Group. A support group rather than a class, meeting the first Saturday of the month online and the third in person.
- Print: A Bookstore. An independent Portland bookstore whose calendar is full of author readings, offsite talks and book clubs.
- Maine Arts Commission. Individual writers can apply here: the Maine Artist Fellowship has a Literary Arts category with a $5,000 award.
Where we fit in: these groups bring feedback, deadlines and first readers. When the draft is done, we handle the edit, cover, layout and publishing setup, so the book is ready before the next reading or festival date.
Selling Your Book in Maine: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Online stores. Since October 1, 2019, Maine Revenue Services has required marketplace facilitators to register and collect Maine sales tax on the sales made through their platforms. One without a physical presence in Maine must register once its sales into the state pass $100,000 in a calendar year. In practice, the big online stores handle tax on those orders.
Readings, fairs and festivals. Maine treats only an isolated, one-off sale as a tax-free "casual sale." Repeated selling is handled through registration: Maine Revenue Services issues retailer certificates through the Maine Tax Portal, charges no fee to register, and expects the certificate to be available for inspection where you sell. If you plan a season of signings, ask Maine Revenue Services before the first one.
The rate. The general sales tax rate is 5.5%, and the Tax Foundation's 2026 midyear table shows no local sales tax added on top.
What Maine does not control. Bowker issues ISBNs nationwide through isbn.org; copyright is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office; and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional (loc.gov).
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with Maine Revenue Services or an accountant.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Maine
A search for book publishers in Maine turns up three kinds of business. Traditional presses pay you and carry the risk but accept few books; hybrid publishers split costs on terms that vary widely; self-publishing services like ours are paid for the work while you remain the publisher.
Two Maine presses read submissions directly. Islandport Press in Camden emphasizes Maine writers, publishes 10-20 titles a year and reads adult fiction and nonfiction year-round, though children's manuscripts are closed through at least 2026. The University of Maine Press in Orono takes emailed proposals for scholarly and original work about Maine, northern New England, Quebec and the Maritimes.
Before paying any publishing company, confirm who owns the ISBN and store accounts, whether royalties reach you directly, and that the quote is in writing. The alliance's guide to avoiding publishing scams is worth ten minutes. With us, the ISBN, accounts and royalties stay yours.
A Small Print Run Is No Longer the Only Option
A book about a harbor, a trail or a family farm used to mean boxes of copies in the garage. Print-on-demand paperback and hardcover setup removes that cost: copies are printed when readers order them, and the ebook sits alongside.
Books built around a place raise production questions that we settle before typesetting: whether photos and maps need a color interior or hold up in black and white, how page count changes the printed price, and how a field-guide layout behaves on an e-reader. You approve a sample spread before the full layout starts.
Expanded distribution then lets Maine bookstores and libraries order copies through their usual channels, from a coastal gift shop to a library in Aroostook County.

Maine's Literary Heritage
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland in 1807, was a national literary figure by the 1850s and was world-famous by his death in 1882; the Maine Historical Society traces his life from a Portland boyhood. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin while renting 63 Federal Street in Brunswick between 1850 and 1852, a house now owned by Bowdoin College.
