Arizona Book Publishing Services for Authors Finally Writing the Book

Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company that has guided authors since 2014. Our book publishing services in Arizona cover editing, cover design and self-publishing setup for writers in Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa and across the state, usually in 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and our head office in Dallas, Texas, meets you by phone and video call.

Some of the best Arizona manuscripts are written in a second act: a memoir after the career, a family history, a book of hard-won professional knowledge or a Southwest novel. The state also gives independent authors real stages, from a major book festival with its own indie-author program to an active crime-writing chapter.

Arizona Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Arizona offers writers a major book festival in Tucson and plenty of year-round help in between.

  • Arizona Center for the Book. Based at the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records in Phoenix, a division of the Secretary of State, it is the state's Library of Congress affiliate and sponsors programs on Arizona's literary heritage.
  • Tucson Festival of Books. Held on the University of Arizona campus since its debut in March 2009, it runs an application program for independent authors and a literary awards competition now in its 15th year.
  • Pima County Public Library Writer in Residence. A year-round program, funded by the Arizona State Library, in which a local author meets writers one on one about ideas, edits, writer's block and publishing questions. Sessions run each fall at Martha Cooper Library (check the library calendar), alongside workshops such as "Mapping Tucson Through Memoir."
  • Desert Sleuths. The Phoenix-area chapter of Sisters in Crime serves members across Arizona, and its monthly Zoom programs are free and open to all.
  • Arizona Professional Writers. Journalists, editors, novelists and other writers meet through chapters in Phoenix, Payson and Show Low for workshops, professional meetings and book festivals.
  • Changing Hands Bookstore. An independent bookstore in Phoenix and Tempe since 1974 that lists more than 300 events a year.
  • Arizona Commission on the Arts. Its Artist Opportunity Grant is open to artists in all disciplines and at any career stage; the 2026 window ran from August 6 to September 24.

Where we fit in: the festival, the library coach and the writing groups make the book better. We make it publishable, with the edit, cover, interior and store setup handled by one team.

Selling Your Book in Arizona: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

A privilege tax, not a sales tax. Arizona's version of sales tax is the transaction privilege tax (TPT). In the Department of Revenue's current rate table, combined state and county retail rates run from 5.6% to 6.9%, and cities add their own privilege tax on top.

Fairs and craft shows. The Arizona Department of Revenue says vendors at a special event, swap meet or arts and crafts show may need a TPT license, and event operators must keep a list of every vendor's name, business name and address. Licenses are requested with the Arizona Joint Tax Application (JT-1).

Online stores. Since October 1, 2019, marketplace facilitators with more than $100,000 in Arizona sales have had to file and pay TPT. Sellers whose Arizona sales run only through such a marketplace do not need their own license for those sales, according to the Department's remote seller guidance, which helps authors who sell mainly through large online bookstores.

Outside the state's reach. Three things work the same nationwide: the ISBN, which in the U.S. comes from Bowker; copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office; and the Library of Congress Control Number, requested before publication through the Preassigned Control Number program if you want one. Your ISBN is set up in your own name or imprint.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. The Arizona Department of Revenue or a tax professional can confirm what applies to you.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Arizona

Before comparing publishing companies in Arizona, know the three models. With a traditional publisher, the house pays and takes the rights. With a hybrid, you pay a share and split the royalties. With a self-publishing service, you pay for the work and keep the rights and every royalty.

The University of Arizona Press in Tucson, founded in 1959, publishes about 55 books a year and has more than 1,600 in print, mostly scholarly and regional titles, and it invites proposals that fit its list. Novels and memoirs outside that list usually need a literary agent or a self-publishing route.

Three checks protect you with any provider: the ISBN and store accounts should carry your name, royalties should be paid to you, and the price should be in writing. We are a self-publishing service, so the ISBN, the accounts and the royalties stay in your name.

A Finished Manuscript Is Not Yet a Finished Book

The gap between a completed draft and a book a stranger will buy is wider than most first-time authors expect. Editing is part of it, but so are structure, cover, typography, metadata, categories and pricing, and each one affects whether the book sells.

Authors who have finally finished a long-planned book often need an honest read before anything else: does the manuscript need structural work, a straight edit or simply production? That question is worth settling in the free consultation, before you choose a package.

For professionals turning expertise into a book, we can build a chapter plan from what you know, then either edit what you write or ghostwrite from interviews.

  2. 2

Editing. The edit your book actually needs: developmental, line or copyedit, then a final proofread.

  4. 4

Publishing and launch. ISBN set up in your name or imprint, then listings on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Google Play Books, with optional marketing.

Most books that need standard editing, formatting and a cover are ready in 4–8 weeks. Illustrated and children's books take longer. Publishing packages start at $299. Compare publishing packages and prices.

The Department of Revenue says vendors at special events, swap meets and arts and crafts shows may need one, requested with the Joint Tax Application, and the event operator must keep a vendor list the Department can ask for. Rates combine state, county and city tax. This is general information, not tax advice.

Desert Sleuths, the Phoenix-area Sisters in Crime chapter, holds free monthly Zoom programs, and Arizona Professional Writers has chapters in Phoenix, Payson and Show Low.
