Writing and Publishing Resources in Dallas

Dallas has a working literary scene, and these are the places we suggest to authors we meet.

  • DFWCon. The DFW Writers Conference, presented by the DFW Writers' Workshop, is an annual two-day conference with nearly 100 classes, panels and workshops, plus in-person pitch sessions with literary agents.
  • Dallas Public Library. Library programs are free and open to the public. Writers' sessions run at branches such as Hampton-Illinois, with workshops such as one on finding your writing voice; check the library's events calendar.
  • Deep Vellum. A Dallas nonprofit publishing house founded in 2013, with its own bookstore and event calendar. Its La Reunion imprint publishes memoirs, essays, regional histories and place-based fiction about Texas.
  • Writers' League of Texas. The state's largest literary arts nonprofit runs an Agents & Editors Conference and workshops open to writers from North Texas.
  • Ted Shine Literary Landmark. Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts holds a Texas Literary Landmark honoring playwright Dr. Theodis "Ted" Shine, Jr., dedicated with the Texas Center for the Book.

Selling Your Book in Dallas

If you sell copies at a Dallas signing, market or festival, the Texas Comptroller's local rate table puts the total sales tax in the city of Dallas at 8.25%: the 6.25% state rate, 1% for the city and 1% for the Dallas MTA transit authority. Dallas County itself adds no county rate. You need a Texas sales and use tax permit to sell books in person, and the permit is free. Online sales through marketplace providers such as Amazon are taxed by the provider. Read more in the Comptroller's sales and use tax guidance.

Sophia Adams, Project Manager with KDP was the mind behind my social media marketing campaign. She was there and helped me upload the book on Amazon, Instagram, Facebook, and X. She gave me her time, creativity, and some valuable advice. I will recommend her to any author. She knows the publishing industry and know how to bring you closer to success.

My experience with Kinetic Digital Publishers has been rewarding. This has especially been so with Dexter Mason, a unique talented individual who I feel is one of the many reasons this company has an A rating. He is passionate at what he does, customer focused and friendly. Hats off to Dexter!
