North Dakota Book Publishing Services for Records Worth Keeping

Kinetic Digital Publishers brings book publishing services in North Dakota to writers in Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks. As a book publishing company since 2014, we edit, design and set up self-publishing so a typical book is ready in 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and we work by phone and video, with in-person meetings at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Many North Dakota books begin because someone decided a record should survive: a homestead, a farm across several generations, a town changed by the oil boom, a tribal nation's own account of itself. Poets and novelists of the Plains are part of the mix too.

North Dakota Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

North Dakota's literary life is spread over long distances, so a few statewide anchors matter more than usual.

  • ND Center for the Book. Based at the North Dakota State Library. For the first time, residents are voting on the state's Great Reads from Great Places, the adult and youth books that will represent North Dakota at the Library of Congress National Book Festival.
  • North Dakota authors list. The same Center keeps a public list of North Dakota authors, illustrators, songwriters and photographers. Published authors can email the State Library to be added, with up to three titles shown.
  • UND Writers Conference , Grand Forks. Founded in 1970 and held every year since, this free three-day literary festival brings six to eight authors to campus each March. The 58th conference, "Who Tells the Story," runs March 22–24, 2027.
  • Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library. Hosts author talks and book discussions throughout the year.
  • Books on Broadway , Williston. A bookshop and coffee shop at 12 1/2 West Broadway with a regional books section and its own calendar of events.

Grants: the North Dakota Council on the Arts awards two $5,000 Artist Growth and Development grants a year to artists living in the state. Disciplines rotate, and literature (creative writing) is next eligible in fiscal year 2029, so plan ahead.

Where we fit in: once your book is out, the State Library list, a library talk or a bookshop shelf can introduce it to readers here. We make sure the book itself is ready: edited, designed, formatted and listed.

Selling Your Book in North Dakota: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

The rate. North Dakota's state sales tax is 5% for most retail sales, and cities and counties may add their own sales taxes, usually collected through the Office of State Tax Commissioner.

Craft shows and book fairs. Sellers of taxable goods need a sales and use tax permit, and the Tax Commissioner asks you to apply through ND TAP 30 days before you start selling. Art and craft shows count as special events, and organizers with 25 or more vendors report their vendor list within 20 days.

Online stores. Marketplace facilitators collect North Dakota state and local sales tax on sales made through their marketplaces. Remote sellers only have to collect once taxable sales into the state pass $100,000 in the current or previous calendar year. See the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner's sales and use tax page.

Federal rules. ISBNs in the U.S. are sold by Bowker, copyright is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, and the Library of Congress Control Number is optional. None of that depends on your state.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in North Dakota

Book publishers in North Dakota, as everywhere, fall into three camps. Traditional presses pay you and hold the publishing rights, hybrid publishers charge you and split the royalties, and self-publishing services like ours charge for the work and leave every right with you.

North Dakota State University Press in Fargo, publishing since 1950, takes regional poetry, fiction and nonfiction through Submittable except in June and July, and its A Little Book about North Dakota series welcomes works of 70 to 125 pages. For stories, poems and essays, North Dakota Quarterly opens its portal for part of most years.

Whichever way you go, get three answers in writing: who owns the ISBN, who receives the royalties, and what the full price is. When a book doesn't fit a press's list, self-publishing is the other route, and that is our specialty.

Print-on-Demand Means It Never Goes Out of Print

The old problem with a local history was the print run: pay for 500 copies, store them in a garage and hope they sell. Print-on-demand removes that risk.

Copies are printed as they are ordered, with no inventory, no minimum order and no upfront print bill, so the book doesn't quietly disappear when the boxes run out.

Photographs, maps and documents are planned early for resolution, placement and print cost, and you see a sample interior spread before the whole book is typeset. Author copies are available at print cost for family reunions, county fairs and museum shops.
