Mississippi Book Publishing Services for Writing That Carries Weight
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers book publishing services in Mississippi: editing, design and self-publishing for writers in Jackson, Gulfport and Southaven. Packages start at $299, standard projects take 4–8 weeks, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Mississippi authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Mississippi writers are easy to find. Guild chapters meet from the Gulf Coast to Tupelo, self-published authors sell their own titles in Authors Alley at the Mississippi Book Festival, and the state's university press keeps civil rights history and Gulf South subjects in print. We help the memoirists, local historians and novelists in that circle turn a draft into a book readers can buy.

Mississippi Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Mississippi takes its writers seriously, and several of the programs below are free.
- Mississippi Center for the Book. Housed at the Mississippi Library Commission in Jackson, it is the state affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. It has a program at the Mississippi Book Festival every year and names the state's Great Reads from Great Places picks.
- Mississippi Writers Guild. Its chapters meet in person around the state, several of them in public libraries: the Lee County Library in Tupelo, the Library of Hattiesburg and the B.J. Chain Public Library in Olive Branch. The Coastal Chapter gathers every third Wednesday at the Gulfport Arts Center.
- Mississippi Book Festival , Jackson. A free one-day festival in and around the State Capitol (September 26 in 2026). Its Authors Alley hosts dozens of self-published authors selling their books, and exhibitors can apply for space.
- Oxford Conference for the Book. Started in 1993 by the University of Mississippi's Center for the Study of Southern Culture and Square Books, it runs each spring (March 24–27 in 2026), and nearly every session is free.
- Square Books, Oxford. The independent bookstore that co-founded the conference still hosts conference readings at Off Square Books on Courthouse Square (see the 2026 conference schedule).
- Mississippi Arts Commission. Professional writers living and working in Mississippi can apply for Artist Fellowships of up to $5,000, with literary categories that alternate each year. Applications close March 1.
Where we fit in: the Guild and the festivals give you readers, critique and a place to sell. We take care of the editing, cover, interior and store setup, so the book you carry to Authors Alley looks as finished as anything on Booksellers Row.
Selling Your Book in Mississippi: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
The rate. According to the Mississippi Department of Revenue, sales of tangible personal property, which includes printed books, are taxed at the regular retail rate of 7%. City levies mostly target hotels and restaurants, but Jackson's Special Infrastructure Tax adds 1% to retail sales inside the city.
Signings and festivals. The Department says a permit is required before you engage in any business subject to sales tax, with a separate permit for each location. You register online through its Taxpayer Access Point and should allow two weeks for the permit packet, so apply well before a festival table.
Online stores. Since July 1, 2020, marketplace facilitators with more than $250,000 in Mississippi sales over 12 months must collect the tax, so large platforms usually handle it on orders placed through them.
Federal, not state. ISBNs come from Bowker and copyright registration goes through the U.S. Copyright Office. A Library of Congress Control Number is optional and can be requested before publication through the Library's Preassigned Control Number program.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Mississippi Department of Revenue or an accountant.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Mississippi
You have three routes. A traditional press pays for production and chooses only a few books. A hybrid publisher charges you and keeps part of the income. A self-publishing service is paid for its work, and the book and the accounts stay yours.
Mississippi's main traditional option is University Press of Mississippi in Jackson. Founded in 1970 and supported by the state's eight public universities, it welcomes proposals for scholarly and general nonfiction, including regional titles on Mississippi, Louisiana and the Gulf South, but it does not publish fiction or poetry. For shorter work, Mississippi Review at the University of Southern Mississippi has published fiction, nonfiction and poetry since 1972.
Before you hire anyone, ask three things: who owns the ISBN and the store accounts, whether royalties are paid straight to you, and whether you get a written quote. Kinetic Digital Publishers sits on the self-publishing side of that line.
Serious Subjects Need Serious Production
A book about difficult history is judged on presentation before anyone reads a page. A careless cover or a crowded interior gives a reader permission to dismiss the content, however careful the research behind it.
So we design and typeset for the category the book really belongs to: restrained where restraint is right, never a template. When a manuscript leans on interviews or oral history, decide up front how much speech to smooth, how speakers are credited and how quotations are set, then hold to those rules on every page. The interpretive and sourcing judgments stay yours.

Mississippi's Literary Heritage
William Faulkner bought an 1844 house in Oxford in 1930 and renamed it Rowan Oak a year later; it is now open to visitors. In Jackson, the Eudora Welty House and Garden, run by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, holds a virtual book club on Welty's fiction every Monday at noon. The Center for the Book also keeps an online Mississippi literary map of the state's authors.

Yes, within limits. University Press of Mississippi welcomes proposals for scholarly and general nonfiction, including books on Mississippi and the Gulf South, but it does not publish fiction or poetry. Mississippi Review at the University of Southern Mississippi takes short fiction, nonfiction and poetry through Submittable. Novels and most memoirs go through an agent or self-publishing instead.
