Hawaii Book Publishing Services for Stories Rooted in Place
Writers in Honolulu, Hilo and Kailua can get book publishing services in Hawaii from Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014. Self-publishing a book typically takes 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Hawaii authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Books written in Hawaiʻi carry a place with them: an island, a family line, a language. In the 2020 Census, 317,497 residents (21.8%) identified as Native Hawaiian; 2024 estimates count 281,950 who speak an Asian or Pacific Island language at home and 311,305 aged 65 or older. Family historians, kūpuna writing memoirs and military families all bring stories that need careful handling.

Hawaii Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
- Hawaiʻi Center for the Book. Based at the Hawaiʻi State Library in Honolulu, it chooses the state's "Great Reads from Great Places" title for the Library of Congress National Book Festival. Its 2025 pick was Big Hearts on a Little Island by Maui author Victoria Moore (Maui Now).
- Hawaiʻi Writers Guild. Formed in Waimea in 2017, the guild has offered workshops in Volcano, Hawi and Waimea and readings at libraries. In August 2026 it co-hosted a reading with the state Poet Laureate at Basically Books in Hilo (State Foundation on Culture and the Arts).
- SCBWI Hawaiʻi. The children's book writers' and illustrators' region sponsors local and virtual workshops and critiques; its 2025 "Words and Wonder" conference was held at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
- Thelma Parker Memorial Library, Waimea. This Hawaiʻi Island library has hosted free events, including a writing workshop with the Poet Laureate in August 2026 and an earlier Self-Publishing 101 session.
- Hawaiʻi Book & Music Festival. Honolulu's festival is taking 2026 off; its organizers say they hope to return in fall 2027.
- Basically Books, Hilo. The store at 334 Kilauea Avenue hosts readings, including the guild event above.
A note on grants: the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts has postponed its individual Culture Fellowship indefinitely, and most of its open grants are for nonprofit organizations.
Where we fit in: island writing circles give you readers who know the place. We add what happens after the draft, from editing and cover design to formatting and publishing setup, while keeping the voice that makes the book local.
Selling Your Book in Hawaii: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
No sales tax, but a GET. Hawaii has no sales tax. Instead, the business pays a General Excise Tax: 4% on most retail sales, plus a 0.5% surcharge that all four counties add through December 31, 2030. You may pass the tax on to buyers, up to 4.712%.
Signings and fairs. For a single event, the Department of Taxation offers a "GE One-Time Event" license on Form BB-1, with a $20 fee. Apply online and the Hawaii Tax ID arrives in about 5–7 days; by mail it takes about 4–6 weeks, while a district office issues it on the spot.
Online stores. Since January 1, 2020, marketplace facilitators have been treated as the retail seller when they reach $100,000 in Hawaii gross income or 200 transactions, under the Department's Tax Information Release 2019-03. A seller's sales of physical goods through the marketplace then count as wholesale, taxed at 0.5%.
Federal rules. Hawaii authors get ISBNs from Bowker and register copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office; a Library of Congress Control Number is optional. Your ISBN goes under your own name or imprint.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Hawaii Department of Taxation or an accountant.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Hawaii
"Publisher" covers three very different arrangements. A traditional press pays for the book and keeps the publishing rights, and it is selective. A hybrid company charges you part of the cost and pays a higher royalty. A self-publishing service like Kinetic Digital Publishers is paid for editing, design and setup, and you remain the publisher.
Among local presses, the University of Hawaiʻi Press takes proposals by email to the right acquisitions editor, not full manuscripts. Mutual Publishing in Honolulu considers inquiries on Hawaii-related subjects only. Bamboo Ridge Press takes poetry and prose for its journal during open calls, by mail, but does not consider unsolicited full-length manuscripts.
Before you pay anyone, confirm the ISBN and store accounts will be in your name, the royalties will come to you, and the price is written down. We meet the first two: the accounts are yours, and royalties come straight to you.
Local Voice, Global Distribution
A book about one island can sell everywhere if it is produced to a national standard: cover, typography and description decide whether a stranger takes it seriously.
Language matters here more than in most states. The Hawaii State Constitution makes English and Hawaiian the official languages, and state law voids any rule that discourages the ʻokina and kahakō in official documents. Your book deserves the same respect. We handle Hawaiian words, diacritics and place names properly in print and ebook files, including the font and encoding work that often breaks them on Kindle, and we check the built file on real devices before anything is published.
The finished book then goes to Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and the other stores.
Self-Publishing, Editing and Ghostwriting Services in Hawaii
01 02 Formatting: print and ebook interiors that meet every store's specs, tested so the ʻokina and kahakō display correctly.

04 Ghostwriting: turn your story, expertise or notes into a finished manuscript.
05 Book publishing: Amazon KDP and wide distribution, with the accounts in your name.
06 Book marketing: launch plans, Amazon listing work and promotion that reaches readers on the mainland too.
07 Audiobooks and author websites: reach listeners and own your online presence.
How We Publish Your Book, Step by Step
1 Free consultation. Tell us about your manuscript and goals. You get a plan, a timeline and a quote before anything starts.
2 Editing. The edit your book actually needs: developmental, line or copyedit, then a final proofread.
3 Design and formatting. A cover built for your genre and an interior laid out for print and ebook.
4 Publishing and launch. ISBN set up in your name or imprint, then listings on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Google Play Books, with optional marketing.
Most books that need standard editing, formatting and a cover are ready in 4–8 weeks. Illustrated and children's books take longer. Publishing packages start at $299. Compare publishing packages and prices.
Hawaii's Literary Heritage
Hawaii launched its State Poet Laureate program in 2022. The current laureate, Lee A. Tonouchi, serves from 2026 to 2029 and is known as "Da Pidgin Guerrilla" for championing Hawaiʻi Pidgin as a literary language (SFCA). Bamboo Ridge Press has published writing by, for and about Hawaiʻi's people since 1978.
