Kinetic Digital Publishers · California
California Book Publishing Services for Authors Competing in a Crowded Market
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, brings book publishing services in California to self-publishing authors in Los Angeles and San Diego. Packages start at $299, a standard book takes 4–8 weeks, and 100% of your rights and royalties stay yours. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas.
We work with California authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person, by appointment, at 20831 Northampton St, Walnut, CA 91789, or at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Our California projects tend to start from a body of work: a founder's method, a screenplay that wants to become a novel, a clinician's or coach's practice, a picture book, or a manuscript that has been nearly finished for years. Each needs a different edit, and each has to stand out on a crowded virtual shelf.

California Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
These organizations help California writers find their people.
- California Center for the Book. The state's Library of Congress affiliate, based at the California State Library in Sacramento.
- California Writers Club. Founded in 1909, it has over 2,000 members in 21 branches from Mendocino to Orange County. Branches hold monthly speaker meetings on craft and publishing and run contests and anthologies. You do not need to be published to join.
- Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. Held each April on the USC campus, with free general admission and more than 300 exhibitors. Walking the booths shows how authors and small presses present their books.
- Bay Area Book Festival , Berkeley. A downtown Berkeley festival with 400+ authors and 120+ programs. The next one is set for June 4-6, 2027.
- Vroman's Bookstore , Pasadena. An independent store founded in 1894 that hosts more than four hundred events a year, including author signings and launch parties.
- Book Passage , Corte Madera. Known for hosting more than 1,200 events a year, most free and open to the public, with a second store in San Francisco's Ferry Building.
- California Arts Council. Its Individual Artists Fellowship is open to individual artists in any discipline, literary arts included, through eight regional organizations. Awards are $5,000, $10,000 or $50,000 by career stage; the 2026 round closed in May-June 2026.
Where we fit in: a club meeting or a festival panel tells you what readers expect. We turn that knowledge into a finished book, edited, designed and set up on every major store.
Selling Your Book in California: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Tax rates. California's statewide sales and use tax rate is 7.25%, and local district taxes of 0.10% to 2.00% are added in many areas, sometimes more than one at a time.
Festivals, fairs and pop-ups. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration counts anyone selling at a location for less than 90 days as a temporary seller. A temporary seller's permit is free, covers up to 90 days at one location, and can be requested online up to 90 days before your start date. Event operators also need certain details from each seller, so have your permit before you book a table.
Online stores. Since October 1, 2019, the Marketplace Facilitator Act has made marketplaces generally responsible for the tax on sales made through them for delivery to California, so the big stores handle it on those orders.
Same rules in every state. Living in California changes nothing about your ISBN, which you buy from Bowker, or your copyright, which you register with the U.S. Copyright Office. The Library of Congress also offers a free, optional control number for libraries through its PCN program.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in California
Start with the path, not the company. A traditional publisher pays for production and handles distribution, which brings industry credibility and less hands-on work, but you trade rights, control and often years of waiting. Self-publishing gives you control of the content, cover, price and release date, and a larger share of each sale, but you fund the production. Hybrid deals blend both models; check exactly what you pay for and what you give up.
Two well-known book publishers in California show what the traditional route looks like. The University of California Press in Oakland, founded in 1893, takes proposals by email to the acquisitions editor for your field, but generally does not publish new fiction, poetry, children's books or autobiography. Heyday, a Berkeley nonprofit founded in 1974, publishes California history, nature and culture and lists no open submission guidelines.
Whoever you choose, ask who owns the ISBN and accounts, where royalties are paid, and whether the quote is itemized.
A Competitive Market Rewards Books That Are Actually Finished
California authors often write into crowded categories, where readers judge in seconds. That makes three common publishing mistakes expensive.
Skipping a professional edit
Even strong writers miss their own gaps. We edit structure first, then line by line, and hit the opening pages hardest because they decide the sample download.
Treating the cover as an afterthought
Your cover is read at thumbnail size beside the bestsellers in your category. We design for that comparison, along with a title, description and categories chosen against what is actually selling.
Hiring help that doesn't share your goal
A business book that has to win speaking work and a debut novel need different plans. We agree the goal first, then shape the edit, design and launch around it.

California's Literary Heritage
Two of the state's best-known writers have places you can still visit. At Jack London State Historic Park in Glen Ellen, you can see the cottage where London wrote books, stories and articles, and the ruins of Wolf House, his dream home that burned in 1913. In Salinas, the National Steinbeck Center is one of the largest literary museums in the country devoted to a single author.

Talk to our teamMost temporary sellers do. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration treats anyone selling at one location for less than 90 days as a temporary seller. The temporary seller's permit is free, you can request it online up to 90 days ahead, and the event operator will ask for your details. This is general information, not tax advice.
The California Writers Club is the easiest start: 21 branches from Mendocino to Orange County, open to unpublished writers. For a bigger crowd, go to the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at USC each April or the Bay Area Book Festival in Berkeley, and look for author events at stores like Vroman's in Pasadena.
Some, with limits. The University of California Press in Oakland accepts proposals through the acquisitions editor for your subject, but generally not for new fiction, poetry, children's books or autobiography. Heyday in Berkeley publishes California history, nature and culture and posts no open submission guidelines. For most genres, self-publishing is the faster route.
Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. California authors can also meet us in person, by appointment, at 20831 Northampton St, Walnut, CA 91789, or work with us by phone and video call.
Yes. Children's book publishing in California works the same way as any of our projects, but picture books need planning from the first page: trim size, full-color printing, page count and illustration layout. We format the interior, design the cover and publish in print and ebook. Illustrated books take longer than the usual 4–8 weeks.
Our publishing packages start at $299; the final price depends on the editing, design and marketing your book needs. You get a quote in your free consultation before any work starts. See our publishing packages or read the [full cost breakdown](/blogs/cost-of-publishing-a-book-in-2026-complete-breakdown).
Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
