Kansas Book Publishing Services for Books Worth Keeping

For authors in Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City and every Kansas town, Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers book publishing services in Kansas. Self-publishing with us means 100% of your rights and royalties stay yours, packages start at $299, and editing to launch usually takes 4–8 weeks. We serve Kansas by phone and video call from our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Plenty of Kansas books are written to last: a farm family's story in the state that leads the nation in wheat and sorghum, a career building aircraft in Wichita, the "Air Capital of the World," or service at Fort Riley, Fort Leavenworth or McConnell Air Force Base. Town histories and faith journeys belong on that shelf too.

Kansas Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Kansas writers can lean on a club that dates to 1903, busy public libraries and two festivals. A starting list:

  • Kansas Center for the Book. A program of the State Library of Kansas and the state's affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. Each year it names 15 Kansas Notable Books, by Kansans or about Kansas, and honors the authors at the Kansas Book Festival.
  • Kansas Book Festival , Topeka. Held each September at Washburn University; the 2026 festival was on September 26.
  • Kansas Authors Club. Organized in Topeka in 1903, it holds a yearly state meeting with workshops and an awards banquet, plus district and state writing contests.
  • Kansas Writers Association , Wichita. A nonprofit since 1996 that meets the first Saturday of each month at the Evergreen Branch Library.
  • Johnson County Library Writers Conference. Now in its 11th year, with tracks in mystery, poetry, romance and children's writing, backed by the library's self-publishing resources.
  • Wichita Public Library Local Author Day Expo. Local writers show their books across every genre; the 2026 expo was August 8.
  • Watermark Books & Cafe , Wichita. Opened in 1977 and now at 4701 E Douglas Ave, it promises "great author events."
  • The Raven Book Store , Lawrence. At 809 Massachusetts St., it hosts signings and co-hosted the first Free State Book Festival in May 2026.

A note on grants: the Kansas Arts Commission's main grants go to nonprofits and local governments. Individuals can apply for the Tallgrass Artist Residency and the Artist INC career training.

Where we fit in: clubs and festivals build your readership. We build the book itself, from edit to listing.

Selling Your Book in Kansas: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

What to charge. The Kansas Department of Revenue sets the state retailers' sales tax at 6.5%, and cities and counties may add their own local sales tax.

Book festivals and craft fairs. Kansas expects anyone making retail sales to collect tax, even once a year. At a special event you either hold a Kansas sales tax registration certificate (no fee to register) or use the event tax packet the coordinator hands out and pay within 25 days after the event. If you sell at more than four Kansas events a year, you must register. Coordinators request packets 30 days ahead and send the Department a vendor list afterward.

Online stores. Since July 1, 2021, marketplace facilitators with more than $100,000 of taxable sales into Kansas in a calendar year collect and remit the tax.

Federal, not state. Kansas has no role in your ISBN, which comes from Bowker (the U.S. ISBN agency), or your copyright, registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. The Library of Congress Control Number is an optional extra.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Kansas

A traditional publisher pays an advance or royalties and owns the publishing rights for the contract term. A self-publishing service charges for its work and you keep the rights. Hybrids sit between the two, so ask exactly what you pay and what you give up.

The University Press of Kansas in Lawrence, founded in 1946 to represent the state universities, welcomes emailed proposals, including general-interest nonfiction such as Kansas and Midwest history, biography and memoir. Meadowlark Press in Emporia reads poetry through its Birdy Poetry Prize ($25 entry) and considers every entry for a standard contract.

When you compare book publishers in Kansas, ask who holds the ISBN and accounts, who receives the royalties, and whether the price is in writing. With us, the ISBN, the store accounts and the royalties are yours.

Built to Be Read in Forty Years, Not Forty Days

A book meant to last involves decisions most authors never think about: trim size and paper, typeface, how photographs reproduce, whether an index is worth it, and how the ebook handles documents and tables.

We make those decisions with you rather than defaulting to the cheapest option, and you see a sample interior before the whole book is typeset.

Publishing setup then covers Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution, so libraries and bookshops can order copies for as long as you keep the book available. That matters for the kind of titles Kansas itself celebrates: its 2026 Notable Books include an aviation history, an Eisenhower and D-Day study and a small-town memoir.

Kansas's Literary Heritage

Playwright William Inge, who won a Pulitzer Prize for Picnic, was born in Independence, where his boyhood home still stands. Gordon Parks, born in Fort Scott, wrote the autobiographical novel The Learning Tree, as the Kansas Historical Society records. Langston Hughes said his "whole childhood was spent here in Lawrence and Topeka, and sometimes in Kansas City."

Not always for a one-off event. The Kansas Department of Revenue lets event vendors either hold a sales tax registration certificate or use the coordinator's event tax packet and pay within 25 days. Selling at more than four Kansas events a year requires registration, which is free. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

The Kansas Authors Club, organized in 1903, runs contests and a yearly state meeting, and the Kansas Writers Association meets monthly in Wichita. Johnson County Library's annual Writers Conference and Wichita Public Library's Local Author Day Expo are good places to meet working authors and readers.

Yes, as proposals. The University Press of Kansas in Lawrence accepts emailed proposals for scholarly and general-interest nonfiction, including Kansas history and memoir. Meadowlark Press in Emporia considers poetry through its Birdy Poetry Prize. Novelists and most other authors usually self-publish or seek an agent.

It is possible if it fits the rules. Each year the State Library of Kansas names 15 Notable Books written by Kansans or about a Kansas topic, chosen from the previous year's titles, and honors the authors at the Kansas Book Festival. A professionally edited, well-produced book with library distribution gives you the best footing.

Our publishing packages start at $299, whether you live in Wichita or a town of 300. The final price depends on how much editing, design and marketing the book needs, and you get the quote before any work begins.
