Idaho Book Publishing Services for Authors Who Finish What They Start

Kinetic Digital Publishers brings book publishing services in Idaho to authors in Boise, Meridian and Nampa, and we have been a book publishing company since 2014. Self-publishing takes about 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Idaho authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Idaho books often come out of something practical. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture says agribusiness makes up 20% of the state's economy across 25,000 farms and ranches, outdoor recreation supported 37,478 Idaho jobs in 2023, and the Census Bureau ranked Idaho the second-fastest-growing state from 2010 to 2020. Farm and ranch families, hunting and fishing writers, and newcomers starting over all have practical stories to tell.

Idaho Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

  • Idaho Center for the Book. Housed at Boise State University's Albertsons Library, it has been a Library of Congress Center for the Book affiliate since December 1993. Each year its Idaho Great Reads program picks one adult and one youth title for the National Book Festival.
  • Idaho Writers Guild. Literary lunches, critique groups and an annual conference, plus a fall Idaho Author Book Fair with Boise Public Library; check the guild's calendar for the next fair.
  • The Cabin, Boise. This 1940 log building hosts readings, workshops and summer camps, and calls itself the only nonprofit in Idaho devoted entirely to reading and writing.
  • Boise City Writer-in-Residence. Since 2023, the city, Boise Public Library and The Cabin have named Idaho writers to six-month residencies with a one-time $5,000 stipend (2026–27 cycle) and free monthly public programs.
  • Sun Valley Writers' Conference and Storyfort. The Sun Valley conference, founded in 1995, meets each July (2027: July 17–19). Storyfort is the free readings-and-storytelling side of Boise's Treefort festival each spring.
  • Rediscovered Books, Boise. Open since 2006, it regularly hosts author events for local and national writers and runs writers' workshops (Idaho Business Review).

A note on grants: unlike many state arts agencies, the Idaho Commission on the Arts funds individual writers through its biennial Writer in Residence award, $5,000 a year, for people who have lived in Idaho at least one year.

Where we fit in: Idaho's guild, fairs and residencies help you finish and share the work. We handle the production side so the finished book holds up next to anything on a Boise bookstore shelf.

Selling Your Book in Idaho: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Online stores. Since June 1, 2019, marketplace facilitators have collected Idaho sales tax once their own and third-party Idaho sales exceed $100,000 in the current or previous year. The Tax Commission adds that sellers who sell only through registered marketplace facilitators don't need their own Idaho seller's permit.

Craft fairs, markets and book fairs. Idaho calls these promoter-sponsored events. The promoter registers the event and receives an Event ID, and every seller registers for the event with that ID, using a regular seller's permit or a temporary one. Sales must be reported no later than 15 days after the event ends, and you can hold up to three temporary permits a year before you need a regular permit.

The rate. Idaho's sales tax is 6%. Some resort cities, including Ketchum, McCall and Sun Valley, add a local sales tax.

Outside state control. ISBNs come from Bowker, copyright is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional, wherever in Idaho you live. Your ISBN carries your own name or imprint.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Idaho State Tax Commission or an accountant.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Idaho

When you compare book publishers in Idaho, sort them by model first. Traditional publishers fund the book and hold the publishing rights, so they choose carefully. Hybrid publishers charge part of the cost. Self-publishing services such as Kinetic Digital Publishers bill for the work while you stay the publisher of record.

Caxton Press in Caldwell has published books about the American West since 1925, but its site lists no submission guidelines, so ask before sending anything. Pacific Press in Nampa, a Seventh-day Adventist publisher, says it is open to new manuscripts that fit its faith mission. Limberlost Press in Boise solicits most of its poetry books but welcomes queries.

With any company, find out who owns the ISBN and store accounts, who collects the royalties, and whether the price is quoted in writing. With us, the answer to the first two is you.

Plain Writing Still Needs Professional Production

A straightforward book benefits most from good production, because there is nothing to hide behind. The cover, the typography and the opening pages carry the whole first impression.

Practical books add their own demands. Homesteading guides, farm histories and outdoor how-to books live or die on structure: chapter order, step sequences, and how lists, tables and diagrams sit on the page so a reader can follow them in the field.

We give those details the same attention as a novel's prose. You get a cover designed for your category, interiors typeset for print and ebook, and an edit that tightens without flattening your voice.

Idaho's Literary Heritage

Idaho's best-known literary landmark is in Ketchum: the Hemingway House and Preserve, Ernest Hemingway's final home, has been cared for by The Community Library since 2017 and hosts an invitation-only writer residency. Down the valley in Hailey, Ezra Pound was born, which led one Ketchum bookseller to call the area "bookends for modern literature."

Usually you need a seller's permit, regular or temporary. At craft fairs and similar promoter-sponsored events, you register for the event with the promoter's Event ID and report sales within 15 days after it ends. You can hold up to three temporary permits a year. Idaho residents who qualify for the small seller exemption don't need a permit, so check first. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

The Idaho Writers Guild runs writing groups, critique groups, literary lunches and a yearly conference, plus a fall author book fair in Boise. The Cabin in Boise hosts readings and workshops, children's writers can join SCBWI Utah/Southern Idaho, and the Sun Valley Writers' Conference gathers readers and authors every July.

A handful, each narrow. Pacific Press in Nampa says it is open to new manuscripts that fit its Christian mission, and Limberlost Press in Boise welcomes queries for poetry. Caxton Press in Caldwell publishes Western titles but posts no submission guidelines. For most other books, self-publishing is the practical route.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas, and we have no Idaho location. We work with Idaho authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Files and proofs are shared online, so a ranch works as well as Boise.

Packages for publishing start at $299. A book with photos, diagrams or a heavy edit costs more than a clean novel manuscript, so we quote after reviewing yours in a free consultation. Yes, a few that individuals can actually apply for. The Idaho Commission on the Arts awards a biennial Writer in Residence grant of $5,000 a year to writers who have lived in Idaho for at least a year. In Boise, the city's Writer-in-Residence program pays a one-time $5,000 stipend for a six-month residency (2026–27 cycle).

Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
