Kinetic Digital Publishers · New Jersey

New Jersey Book Publishing Services for Authors Short on Time

Run since 2014 from a head office in Dallas, Texas, Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company with book publishing services in New Jersey for self-publishing authors from Newark and Jersey City to Paterson. A book that needs standard editing is usually ready in 4–8 weeks, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and packages start at $299.

Meetings happen by phone and video call, or in person at the Dallas office if you prefer. New Jersey has busy circles of genre novelists, who meet monthly through Liberty States Fiction Writers; picture-book, middle-grade and YA authors, who get their own signing and talk sessions at the Collingswood Book Festival; and nonfiction writers covering the state's history and politics.

New Jersey Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

New Jersey packs a lot of literary life into a small map. These are the places we would send a writer here first.

  • New Jersey Center for the Book at Rutgers. The state's Library of Congress affiliate, based at the Rutgers School of Communication and Information in New Brunswick. Its mission is to celebrate books, reading, libraries and New Jersey's literary heritage.
  • Liberty States Fiction Writers. A multi-genre group with monthly meetings and industry speakers. Its 16th annual conference is set for April 10, 2027 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hamilton, with workshops on craft and indie publishing plus free pitch sessions with editors and agents. The 2026 event sold out.
  • Mercer County Library System Book Festival. A free day of local and regional authors, panels and family events at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch. The second edition ran on September 26, 2026.
  • Woodbridge Public Library Writers' Group. A monthly evening meeting at the Main Library for fiction and nonfiction writers, poets and playwrights to talk through their projects. Check the library calendar for the current schedule.
  • Collingswood Book Festival. The longest-running literary event in the Delaware Valley fills more than six blocks of Haddon Avenue each October. Self-published authors can apply for an exhibitor booth; the 2026 for-profit fee was $75.
  • Labyrinth Books , Princeton. The independent shop at 122 Nassau Street hosts a steady run of author conversations.

Grants: unlike many states, New Jersey funds individual writers. The New Jersey State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Fellowships, run by Mid Atlantic Arts, rotate categories each year; the 2027 round (closed July 2, 2026) covered poetry and playwriting/screenwriting.

Where we fit in: these groups give you feedback, readers and a booth. We handle the editing, cover, interior and publishing setup so the book is done before the festival deadline.

Selling Your Book in New Jersey: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Register before you sell in person. The New Jersey Division of Taxation says every vendor doing business in the state must register at least 15 days before selling, using the Business Registration Application (Form NJ-REG). You then receive a Business Registration Certificate and, if you collect sales tax, a Certificate of Authority (Form CA-1). Both must be on display at every event where you sell.

The rate. The statewide sales and use tax rate is 6.625%. The Division notes exceptions to that rate, and some local sales taxes apply to certain items sold in Atlantic City and Cape May County. See the Division of Taxation's information for vendors.

Online stores. For sales from November 1, 2018, remote sellers must collect New Jersey tax once they pass $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions into the state. Sales made through a marketplace are different: the marketplace facilitator collects and remits the tax, whatever the seller's size.

What stays federal. Your ISBN (issued in the U.S. by Bowker) and copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office work the same in every state, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in New Jersey

You have three kinds of choice. A traditional or university press buys publishing rights and pays you royalties. A hybrid publisher splits the costs and the income. A self-publishing service, which is what we are, is paid for the work while every right stays with you.

New Jersey is home to two well-known university presses. Princeton University Press welcomes book proposals across the humanities, social sciences and sciences, asks you to send one proposal to one editor, and may take up to eight weeks to reply. Rutgers University Press in New Brunswick publishes books about New Jersey and the mid-Atlantic region.

Whoever you talk to, ask who owns the ISBN and the store accounts, whether royalties come straight to you, and whether the quote is in writing. If a press list isn't the right fit, we can publish the book for you.

Fewer Decisions for You, Not Fewer Choices

Publishing a book well involves dozens of small calls: trim size, fonts, categories, keywords, the back-cover copy. If you have a job and a family, those questions arriving one email at a time can stall a finished manuscript for months.

That is why the plan is agreed once, at the start: what the manuscript needs, in what order and at what cost. After that, you approve the main stages, such as the edit, the cover and the final proof, and our team handles the smaller calls in between.

That suits a fixed date, such as a Collingswood booth in October. From North Jersey to the Shore, the finished book goes live on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo with your rights and royalties untouched.

New Jersey's Literary Heritage

In 1882, the success of a late edition of Leaves of Grass gave Walt Whitman the money to buy a two-story house on Mickle Street in Camden, the first and only home he owned. Now the Walt Whitman House, a National Historic Landmark, it keeps his letters, his deathbed and the 1892 notice of his death that was nailed to the front door.
