Kinetic Digital Publishers · Florida

Florida Book Publishing Services for Memoirs, Spanish Editions and More

Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company working with authors since 2014, with book publishing services in Florida from Jacksonville to Miami and Tampa. Most self-publishing projects take 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Florida authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Census figures show 22.8% of residents are 65 or older, 23.4% of residents aged five and over speak Spanish at home, and the state counts more than 1.3 million veterans. Retirees writing family histories, bilingual authors planning English and Spanish editions, and veterans recording their service are three of the groups this page is written for.

Florida Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

  • Florida Humanities Center for the Book. Florida Humanities was named the state's Library of Congress Center for the Book affiliate in 2021. It chooses Florida's "Great Reads from Great Places" titles for the National Book Festival and offers grants to book festivals around the state.
  • Florida Writers Association. Founded in 2001, it runs the annual Florida WritersCon, the Royal Palm Literary Awards and a directory of local writers groups.
  • SCBWI Florida. The Florida region of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators offers free monthly meetings, online workshops and critique groups, all run by volunteers.
  • Melrose Center, Orlando Public Library. Its audio production studio, sound booth and podcast booth suit authors recording an audiobook sample or author videos. Palm Beach County's CreationStation offers a similar recording studio.
  • Miami Book Fair and Word of South. Miami's fair began in November 1984 and still runs every November; its IberoAmerican Authors program features Spanish-language writers. Word of South mixes literature and music in Tallahassee each April.
  • The BookMark, Neptune Beach. A Jacksonville-area independent store that specializes in new books and author events.

A note on grants: the state Division of Arts and Culture currently lists grant programs for organizations only, with no fellowship open to individual writers.

Where we fit in: Florida's guilds and fairs supply the community, the feedback and the readers. We supply the production: editing, cover, formatting and the publishing setup, ready before your first festival or signing.

Selling Your Book in Florida: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Online stores. Since July 1, 2021, Florida has required marketplace providers to collect tax once their taxable remote sales into the state top $100,000 in the previous calendar year, or if they have a physical presence in the state. Orders placed through the large online bookstores are normally covered by that rule.

Book fairs and signings. The Florida Department of Revenue says exhibitors who make retail sales must register to collect sales tax and the county surtax. That means the same Florida Business Tax Application (online or Form DR-1) any dealer files. Online applicants can retrieve a certificate number after three business days, so register well before the event.

The rate. The state rate is 6%. Many counties add a discretionary sales surtax, so a county with a 1% surtax has a 7% total rate. The Department publishes county rates each year on Form DR-15DSS.

What Florida doesn't control. ISBNs are issued by Bowker for the whole country, registration happens at the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional. We put your ISBN under your own name or imprint.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Florida Department of Revenue or an accountant.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Florida

A search for book publishers in Florida mixes three business models. A traditional house buys the publishing rights and pays for production, but takes few titles. A hybrid publisher shares the costs with you for a larger royalty. A self-publishing service, which is what Kinetic Digital Publishers is, charges for the work and leaves every right with you.

To try the traditional route first, the University Press of Florida asks for a one-page letter of inquiry and does not publish children's or religious books. The University of Tampa Press invites proposals on Florida art, culture and history, especially from African American, Latinx or Indigenous perspectives. Poets can enter the Anhinga Prize for Poetry from Tallahassee's Anhinga Press.

Whoever you hire, ask whose name is on the ISBN and store accounts, who receives the royalties, and whether the quote is in writing. With us, the answer to the first two is you.

One Book, Two Languages: English and Spanish Editions

For many Florida families, the story happened in two languages, and the book can too. We can publish a Spanish edition alongside the English one and set them up as separate listings, so each reaches its own readers. Translation is quoted separately from the publishing work.

Bilingual books need care at the design stage: accents and the ñ have to survive ebook conversion, chapter lengths change in translation, and the cover and description need to work in each language.

Florida also gives Spanish-language authors somewhere to enter. The Florida Book Awards, coordinated by FSU Libraries, include what they describe as the first state-level Spanish Language book award in the country. Check the awards site for the current entry deadline.

Florida's Literary Heritage

Florida honors its writers in the Capitol itself. The Florida Artists Hall of Fame, created by the Legislature in 1986, includes Ernest Hemingway, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Zora Neale Hurston and Tennessee Williams. The state has also named an honorary Poet Laureate since Franklin N. Wood in 1927.

You own every account and get paid directly by each store. Kinetic Digital Publishers is an independent company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by these platforms.
