North Carolina Book Publishing Services From the Mountains to the Coast

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, brings book publishing services in North Carolina to self-publishing authors in Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro. A book needing standard editing, formatting and a cover is usually ready in 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work by phone and video call, or in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

The state's writing life is spread wide. Fiction writers chase the North Carolina Writers' Network's Doris Betts Fiction Prize, Charlotte residents workshop chapters in library critique groups, and Asheville authors line up launches at Malaprop's. Alongside them are family historians and nonfiction writers whose books are about North Carolina itself.

North Carolina Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

From Asheville to Wilmington, the state has more support for writers than most people use. Start here.

  • North Carolina Center for the Book , Charlotte. Run by North Carolina Humanities in Charlotte and listed by the Library of Congress as the state affiliate. Its North Carolina Reads book club features five North Carolina books a year, with virtual author talks from February to June.
  • North Carolina Writers' Network. Formed in 1985 by writers and teachers who met in Greensboro, it is now one of the largest writers' organizations in the country. Membership is open to every genre and level, and it holds a Fall Conference each year.
  • Charlotte Mecklenburg Library writing groups. The Plaza Midwood branch hosts a monthly critique group for fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry, and other branches, such as SouthPark, run open writers' groups for every level.
  • Network competitions. The Doris Betts Fiction Prize pays $250 and publication in the North Carolina Literary Review ; check the Network's site for the current deadline.
  • Malaprop's Bookstore/Café , Asheville. Founded in 1982, it stocks books from major publishers and self-published authors alike and keeps a busy calendar of author launches.
  • Quail Ridge Books , Raleigh. Opened in 1984 and now at 4209-100 Lassiter Mill Road in North Hills, it hosts authors from the community and around the world.

Grants: the North Carolina Arts Council's Artist Support Grants fund individual artists in any discipline, with most grants between $500 and $2,000 per project, through regional groups of local arts councils. Each region sets its own deadline.

Where we fit in: a critique group sharpens the draft and a conference teaches the business. We take the finished manuscript through editing, design and publishing setup so it is ready for a launch night.

Selling Your Book in North Carolina: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Festivals, fairs and markets. The North Carolina Department of Revenue treats fairs, festivals and flea markets as "specialty markets." Anyone selling taxable items there must register with the Department and collect sales tax, even for a single event. You give the organizer your name, permanent address and certificate of registration number, and you display the certificate at your table. Selling without one can lead to on-site collection by the Department. See its specialty market guidance.

The rate. The general state rate is 4.75%, and county and transit rates are added on top. From July 1, 2026, the total in Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) is 8.25%.

Online stores. A remote seller must collect once its sales sourced to North Carolina exceed $100,000 in the current or previous year. A marketplace facilitator, such as a large online store, collects and remits the tax on every sale it facilitates.

What stays federal. Bowker issues U.S. ISBNs, the U.S. Copyright Office registers copyright, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional, wherever you live.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in North Carolina

Start by deciding which deal you want. A traditional or university press pays you and controls the book. A hybrid press asks you to share the costs. A self-publishing service like ours charges for the work and leaves the rights and the income with you.

Durham has two very different presses. Duke University Press takes proposals in its publishing areas through an online form. Blair, a nonprofit press, accepts unagented nonfiction proposals by email, but reads fiction and poetry only through its contests; check its site for when the Lee Smith Novel Prize reopens.

Before you sign with anyone, get answers in writing: whose name is on the ISBN and store accounts, who receives the royalties, and what the full price is.

Different Books, Same Standard

A research monograph and a coastal family memoir need very different editing and exactly the same care in production. We set the editorial approach by genre, design the cover against the books it will sit beside online, and typeset print and ebook editions properly either way.

Some North Carolina books need extra steps. A history built on family records and old photographs needs an interior that shows documents clearly. A military memoir may need a review before release, so we schedule it between editing and design and nothing is typeset twice. Picture books and other children's book publishing projects get illustration time built in from day one.

From Asheville to Raleigh to Wilmington, the finished book goes out on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo with your rights and royalties intact.
