West Virginia Book Publishing Services for Stories Told From the Inside

For book publishing services in West Virginia, Kinetic Digital Publishers edits, designs and handles self-publishing for authors in Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown. Our book publishing company has served writers since 2014. Most standard projects take 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties remain yours. Phone and video calls work well, or visit our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Many West Virginia books are written from the inside: Appalachian novels and memoirs, histories of mines, churches and families, and guides to the state's parks and forests. They deserve the same production quality as anything from a large publisher.

West Virginia Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

West Virginia's writers are spread across river towns and mountain counties, but a few anchors bring them together.

  • West Virginia Writers, Inc. Established in 1977 and run entirely by volunteers, it holds an annual writing contest and an annual conference. Check its site for the next conference.
  • West Virginia Book Festival , Charleston. Founded in 2001, it is held at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center. Its charter sponsors are the West Virginia Humanities Council, the Kanawha County Public Library and Charleston Newspapers.
  • Kanawha County Public Library, Charleston. Besides its role behind the book festival, the library system is hosting this year's WV Writers fall conference, which makes it a practical meeting point for writers in the Kanawha Valley.
  • Taylor Books , Charleston. Independent since 1995, the shop at 226 Capitol Street runs free author talks and book launches, recently including a guide to West Virginia's state parks and forests by Becky and Ben Calwell.

Grants: the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History funds individual artists. Its Arts Entrepreneurship grants offer up to $5,000 (check the department's site for the next round), and Creative Economies Mini Grants of up to $1,000, open to artists in any discipline, have a rolling deadline.

Where we fit in: a contest win or a festival panel creates interest, and a finished, well-made book is what turns that interest into sales. We handle the making.

Selling Your Book in West Virginia: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

The rate. West Virginia's state sales tax is 6%. Many cities add a 1% municipal sales tax, so sales inside those cities are taxed at 7% in total.

Register before you sell. The State Tax Department says every individual or business must hold a West Virginia business registration certificate before engaging in business activity in the state. Apply online through the Business for West Virginia portal or with form BUS-APP; each location needs its own certificate. If you sell regularly at fairs or festivals, ask the Department how that applies to you.

Online orders. Marketplace facilitators have collected West Virginia sales tax on sales made on and after July 1, 2019. Remote sellers below $100,000 a year or 200 transactions fall under a small-seller exception. See the West Virginia Tax Division's sales and use tax page.

Nothing changes federally. Your ISBN still comes from Bowker, copyright is still registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number remains optional.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in West Virginia

It helps to know the three models first. A traditional or university press pays you and controls the edition, a hybrid charges you and shares the income, and a self-publishing service like ours charges for the work while you hold every right.

Two West Virginia presses are worth querying. West Virginia University Press takes book proposals by email only, with separate guidelines for fiction and creative nonfiction, and review can take weeks or months. Mountain State Press, an all-volunteer nonprofit publishing Appalachian work since 1978, takes queries through a form and prefers fiction, story collections, memoir and essays of 30,000 to 90,000 words.

Before paying any company, confirm who holds the ISBN, who collects the royalties and what the written quote includes. If the presses pass, our self-publishing services in West Virginia are another route.

Production Quality Is a Form of Credibility

A book that looks homemade invites readers to discount it, which is the wrong outcome for a book written to set the record straight.

So the cover is designed against the books it will sit beside in its category, the interior is properly typeset, and the edit protects your voice instead of standardizing it. How dialect and regional speech are handled should be settled before editing starts.

For coal, labor and community histories, we organize archival photographs, documents and oral history into a narrative and typeset them so the source material stays readable. Wide distribution then lets libraries and schools order copies.

West Virginia Writers, Inc. is the main statewide group, with a yearly contest and conferences during the year. The West Virginia Book Festival in Charleston and author nights at Taylor Books are good places to meet readers too.

Yes. West Virginia University Press reviews emailed book proposals, including fiction and creative nonfiction. Mountain State Press considers queries for Appalachian fiction, memoir and essays between 30,000 and 90,000 words, though it rarely takes poetry and doesn't publish children's books, YA or erotica.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with West Virginia authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

It shouldn't. Before editing starts, agree with your editor how dialect and regional speech will be handled, so the choice is applied consistently. Any change an editor suggests should come as a tracked query you can accept or reject, not a silent rewrite.

It starts at $299 for a publishing package. What you spend overall depends on whether the manuscript needs editing, a custom cover or marketing, and the quote comes before any work.
