Kentucky Book Publishing Services for Stories With Deep Roots

Since 2014, Kinetic Digital Publishers has worked as a book publishing company for authors across the country, and our book publishing services in Kentucky reach writers in Louisville, Lexington and Bowling Green. Packages start at $299, most self-publishing projects run 4–8 weeks, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Kentucky authors by phone and video call from our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Kentucky stories tend to carry their place with them. We work on memoirs and family records from the 54 Appalachian counties, books by soldiers and families from Fort Campbell and Fort Knox, histories of bourbon and the horse country around Lexington, and regional fiction that needs a firm structure under a strong voice.

Kentucky Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

From Lexington to the mountains, Kentucky has well-established places for writers to learn and to be read.

  • Kentucky Center for the Book. A program of Kentucky Humanities and a designated affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. Its 2026 Great Reads were My Kentucky Moonlight School and The Book Witch.
  • Kentucky Book Festival , Lexington. Run by Kentucky Humanities each fall since the first Kentucky Book Fair in 1981. Author applications open January 15 to May 15; check the festival site for this year's date and venue.
  • Carnegie Center for Literacy & Learning , Lexington. Its Author Academy certificate program runs January to June 2027, and the center hosts the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.
  • Hindman Settlement School , Hindman. Home of the week-long Appalachian Writers' Workshop and Troublesome Creek writers' retreats each fall and spring.
  • Louisville Free Public Library. Its Authors at the Library series brings writers in for talks and signings.
  • Lexington Public Library Northside Digital Studio. An audio booth and Mac lab with InDesign and Photoshop, handy for audio samples and promotional flyers.
  • Carmichael's Bookstore , Louisville. A locally owned independent store at 2720 Frankfort Avenue with a busy author-event calendar.
  • Read Spotted Newt , Hazard. An independent bookshop and creative hub founded in 2020 that hosts signings.
  • Kentucky Arts Council. Individual writers can win its Individual Artist Fellowship or Emerging Artist Award; in September 2026 it awarded $42,000 to 16 literary artists.

Where we fit in: workshops and festivals shape the writing and find the readers. We handle the editing, design and publishing in between.

Selling Your Book in Kentucky: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Six percent, no local add-on. According to the Kentucky Department of Revenue, sales and use tax is 6% and there are no local sales and use taxes in Kentucky, so the rate is the same in Paducah and Pikeville.

Selling at a fair or festival. Kentucky regulation 103 KAR 25:060 lets temporary vendors without a sales tax account report and pay on a Temporary Vendor Sales and Use Tax Return, Form 30A006, and a bond may be required. Transient merchants with no fixed place of business must also get a county permit (Form 51A250) from the county clerk. Paper registration for a regular account (Form 10A100) can take up to three weeks, so start early.

Online stores. Since July 1, 2019, marketplace providers with $100,000 in gross receipts or 200 transactions into Kentucky collect the tax on sales through their platforms.

Federal, not state. ISBNs are sold by Bowker, the U.S. ISBN agency; copyright registration is federal through the U.S. Copyright Office; and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Kentucky

With a traditional publisher, the press pays you and controls publication. With a self-publishing service, you pay for the work and control everything. Hybrid presses do some of each, so compare their fees and royalty splits carefully.

The University Press of Kentucky in Lexington accepts unagented nonfiction from January 15 to November 15 each year, in areas including Appalachian studies, books about Kentucky, bourbon and foodways; unagented fiction goes only through its New Poetry & Prose and Screen Door Press series. Sarabande Books, a nonprofit Louisville press founded in 1994, considers finished manuscripts through its prizes and open reading periods.

Before hiring book publishers in Kentucky, ask who owns the ISBN, where the royalties go, and whether the quote is in writing. With us, the ISBN and store accounts are in your name and royalties are paid to you.

Voice Is the Asset. Structure Is the Job

Regional writing usually arrives with its voice already intact. What it often needs is a spine: a reason for chapter three to follow chapter two, and a reason for a reader who has never been to Kentucky to keep turning pages.

We do that structural work first and separately, so you can weigh the big decisions before anyone edits a sentence. Then come line editing, proofreading, a cover designed for the category, and publishing with your rights and royalties untouched.

Family records deserve the same care. Kentucky's Oral History Commission, which the Kentucky Historical Society calls the only state commission in the nation dedicated to statewide oral history, has helped collect more than 35,000 interviews. If your book draws on recorded memories like these, we help shape them into chapters a stranger can follow.

Kentucky's Literary Heritage

Robert Penn Warren, the nation's first Poet Laureate, was born in Guthrie in 1905, as Western Kentucky University's Warren center notes. In Greenup County, the Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve protects 710 acres of W-Hollow, the land Stuart made famous in his stories. Both men are in the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.
