Kinetic Digital Publishers · South Dakota
South Dakota Book Publishing Services for Books That Stay Available
Since 2014, Kinetic Digital Publishers has worked as a full-service book publishing company, and our book publishing services in South Dakota are open to writers in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Aberdeen. Editing, cover design and self-publishing setup usually take 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, 100% of your rights and royalties stay with you, and our head office in Dallas, Texas, works with you by phone and video call.
South Dakota writing has a few strong traditions to build on: nonfiction about Northern Great Plains history and ranch and town life, poetry organized statewide since 1927, and children's picture books rooted in the region's landscape. We work on all three, as well as memoir and fiction.

South Dakota Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
South Dakota's literary circle is small, which makes it easier to find your way in.
- South Dakota Center for the Book. Run by the South Dakota Humanities Council from its office in Brookings, it is the state's Library of Congress affiliate and picks a South Dakota title for the Great Reads from Great Places display at the National Book Festival. The Council's One Book South Dakota program has had communities reading and discussing the same book since 2003.
- South Dakota Festival of Books. The Humanities Council's fall festival, held in Sioux Falls.
- South Dakota State Poetry Society. Founded in Aberdeen in 1927, it publishes the journal Pasque Petals twice a year, runs annual poetry contests and prints selected full-length collections under its Pasque Press imprint.
- Siouxland Libraries, Sioux Falls. The library system brings authors in for public programs.
- Mitzi's Books, Rapid City. An independent bookstore that opened downtown in 2011. A 2022 Publishers Weekly profile noted that, far from the big author tours, its in-store events tend to feature local writers. Check current hours and events before you go.
- South Dakota Arts Council grants. Individual artists in any discipline can apply. In the 2025-26 cycle, Artist Fellowships paid $5,000 and Artist Project Grants up to $2,000 funded projects with public engagement.
Where we fit in: the festival, the library programs and the poetry society give you readers and honest feedback. We take the finished draft through editing, cover, interior and store setup.
Selling Your Book in South Dakota: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
The rates. South Dakota's state sales and use tax is 4.2%, and most towns add a municipal sales tax of 1% to 2%, according to the South Dakota Department of Revenue. Sales at special events also fall under the state tourism tax.
Book fairs and signings. The Department's special events guide requires a temporary license only for vendors at the Sturgis Rally and the State Fair. At any other craft fair or vendor show, an author without a South Dakota sales tax license files the special event return the organizer provides.
Online stores. Since March 1, 2019, marketplace providers that meet the state's threshold must hold a South Dakota license and remit tax on the sales they facilitate. The threshold is more than $100,000 in gross revenue from sales into the state. For most self-published authors, that means the large online stores handle the tax on orders placed through them.
Federal, not state. ISBNs come from Bowker, copyright registration goes through the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number, if you want one, is requested before publication through the Preassigned Control Number program. We set up your ISBN under your own name or imprint.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Questions about your own sales belong with the South Dakota Department of Revenue or a tax professional.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in South Dakota
Publishing routes split three ways: a traditional press buys the rights and pays for production but is selective, a hybrid publisher shares costs with the author, and a self-publishing service is paid for its work while the rights, ISBN and income stay with you.
Among publishing companies in South Dakota, two presses focus on the region. The South Dakota Historical Society Press in Pierre accepts nonfiction about the Northern Great Plains and regional children's picture books, but not poetry, historical fiction, genealogy-based work or anything written with AI. Augustana University's Center for Western Studies in Sioux Falls has more than 75 publications to its credit; ask before sending a manuscript.
Put three questions to any service before you sign. Will the ISBN and the store accounts be registered to you? Will royalties be paid to you directly? Is the full price in writing? Kinetic Digital Publishers works on the self-publishing side, and our answer to the first two is yes.
No Print Run, No Garage Full of Boxes
For decades, publishing a regional book meant paying a printer up front for hundreds of copies and finding somewhere to keep them. Print-on-demand ended that: each paperback or hardcover is produced when a reader orders it.
That suits South Dakota, where a county history, a ranch memoir or a book about a reservation community may sell steadily for years rather than all in one season. With no stock to write off, a small and patient readership is enough.
It is the core of what our self-publishing services in South Dakota set up: print-on-demand paperback and hardcover editions next to the ebook, so museum shops, libraries and bookstores can order copies whenever they need them.

South Dakota's Literary Heritage
De Smet is the state's best-known literary landmark. Within weeks of Laura Ingalls Wilder's death in 1957, residents founded the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society, which restored the Surveyor's House in 1967 and today shows visitors the Ingalls family's original homes and school in the "Little Town on the Prairie."
Poetry runs deep as well: Pasque Petals is the oldest official journal in continuous publication of any state society in the National Federation of State Poetry Societies.

Talk to our teamUsually not. The Department of Revenue requires a temporary license only for vendors at the Sturgis Rally and the State Fair. At other craft fairs and vendor shows, unlicensed sellers file the organizer's special event return, and state, municipal and tourism tax still apply. This is general information, not tax advice.
Start with the South Dakota Festival of Books each fall. Poets can join the South Dakota State Poetry Society, which runs annual contests and a twice-yearly journal. Siouxland Libraries in Sioux Falls also hosts author programs.
Yes, for regional nonfiction. The South Dakota Historical Society Press in Pierre reviews proposals for nonfiction about the Northern Great Plains and for regional children's picture books, though it turns down poetry, historical fiction and genealogy-based books. Augustana's Center for Western Studies also publishes books about the region. Most novels and memoirs go the self-publishing route.
No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with South Dakota authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Manuscripts, cover drafts and proofs all move online, so long drives don't hold up a book.
Publishing packages start at $299, and the price is the same anywhere in the state. What moves the total is the work your manuscript needs: the depth of the edit, the cover, photo-heavy layouts and any marketing. Compare our publishing packages, read the [full cost breakdown](/blogs/cost-of-publishing-a-book-in-2026-complete-breakdown) and ask for a quote.
