Ohio Book Publishing Services for Authors Ready to Stop Waiting

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, provides book publishing services in Ohio for self-publishing authors in Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati. Most manuscripts that need standard editing, formatting and a cover are ready in 4–8 weeks. Publishing packages begin at $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties stay with you. Meet us by phone, by video call or in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Ohio has a deep bench of writers to learn from. Cleveland authors sell through Loganberry Books' Local Voices program, Columbus writers take workshops at Thurber House, and Cincinnati's library runs a monthly group just for children's book writers. Many also write the state's own history, the kind of book Ohio's university presses publish.

Ohio Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Ohio's three big cities each have a strong place to start, and the state's book fairs reward local authors.

  • Ohio Center for the Book , Cleveland Public Library. The state's Library of Congress affiliate promotes reading and Ohio authors, profiles more than 350 of them and advocates for comics as a medium.
  • Thurber House , Columbus. A literary center at 77 Jefferson Avenue that runs adult writers' studios in person and online, including a beginners' studio, this fall.
  • Literary Cleveland. Six-week workshops this October in fiction, memoir and building a writing habit, plus Inkubator, a free writing conference held in September.
  • Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library. A community-led Children's Book Writers' Group meets monthly at the Green Township branch, and the library's writer-in-residence leads craft workshops.
  • Books by the Banks , Cincinnati. An annual regional book festival; check its site for this year's date.
  • Buckeye Book Fair , Wooster. A charity fair for Ohio authors and illustrators, running for nearly four decades; check the fair's site for the next date.
  • Loganberry Books , Cleveland. Open since 1994 on Larchmere Boulevard, it runs a Local Voices co-op for self- and micro-published authors and an Author Alley weekend that featured more than 60 northeast Ohio authors in 2026.

Grants: the Ohio Arts Council says its grants support organizations, arts learning and individual artists. Its grants page lists the current programs, deadlines and eligibility.

Where we fit in: a workshop gets the draft written and a fair gets it in front of readers. In between, we edit, design and set up the book so it is ready for a Local Voices shelf or a festival table.

Selling Your Book in Ohio: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

The license. Ohio law requires a vendor's license before you make taxable retail sales. A seller who takes books to a temporary show, fair, flea market or similar event in a county where they have no fixed place of business is a "transient vendor" and can get one transient vendor's license for all such counties instead of a license in each. Since April 9, 2025, the fee for a new county or transient vendor's license is $50.

The rate. The state rate is 5.75%. Counties and transit authorities can add up to 3%, and the combined rate cannot go above 8.75%. Rates change during the year, so check the Ohio Department of Taxation's sales and use tax page for the county where you sell.

Online stores. Under the Ohio Revised Code, a marketplace facilitator with more than $100,000 in Ohio sales, or 200 or more separate transactions, counting the sales it facilitates for other sellers, must collect the tax.

What stays federal. Three things don't depend on Ohio at all: Bowker issues ISBNs, the U.S. Copyright Office handles copyright registration, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Ohio

The first question is who pays. A traditional or university press pays you and owns the publishing decisions. A hybrid publisher shares the bill with you. A self-publishing service, our model, bills for the work and leaves you the rights and every royalty.

Three Ohio university presses take proposals. Ohio State University Press takes proposals by email all year and has imprints for regional books (Trillium) and creative work (Mad Creek). Kent State University Press welcomes proposals in its fields, including Ohio history. Ohio University Press in Athens accepts proposals but reads poetry only through its Hollis Summers Poetry Prize.

When you compare services, confirm the ISBN and accounts will be yours, the royalties will be paid to you, and the full price is written down.

The Gap Between Finished and Published

Plenty of Ohio manuscripts are done and still unpublished. The gap is usually not the writing; it's a list of skilled jobs: structural editing if the book needs it, line editing, proofreading, cover design, print and ebook typesetting, the ISBN, categories, keywords, the description and pricing.

None of that is mysterious. We do it in the order that avoids duplicated work. A book that has sat in a drawer for years doesn't expire; we read a sample, say what it needs today and quote that. A company, trade or union history gets one extra step up front, so the personal story and the institutional record are balanced before editing begins.

From Columbus to Cleveland to Cincinnati, the finished book goes live on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo, and the rights and royalties stay yours.
