Kinetic Digital Publishers · Alaska

Alaska Book Publishing Services for Stories the Lower 48 Has Never Heard

For book publishing services in Alaska, Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company in business since 2014, open to writers in Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks and off the road system. Editing, cover design and self-publishing setup usually take 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties remain yours. Everything runs by phone and video call from our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Alaska's own press and literary groups point to the books the state produces: memoir and biography, Alaska Native languages and cultures, natural history, poetry, romance and children's picture books. Many of them depend on photographs, maps and Native place names that need careful handling in editing and design.

Alaska Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Alaska's writers are spread across a huge map, so much of its literary life happens online as well as in Anchorage.

  • Alaska Center for the Book. Founded in 1991, this all-volunteer nonprofit is Alaska's Library of Congress affiliate. It takes part in the National Book Festival, Alaska Reads and the UAA/ADN Statewide Creative Writing Contest.
  • Alaska Book Week. A statewide celebration of readings, panels, lectures, discussions and youth activities, coordinated by the Center for the Book around the first week of October each year.
  • 49 Writers. Affordable creative writing classes for beginning, intermediate and advanced writers, plus public readings and events, with membership open to writers in and beyond Alaska.
  • Alaska Writers Guild. Its 2026 conference on September 18-19, run with Alaska Romance Writers, SCBWI Alaska and the University of Alaska Anchorage's Department of Writing, brought in agents, editors and authors. The Guild also runs quarterly contests, critique groups and the Lin Halterman Grant, which gave each 2025 winner $500.
  • Alaska Collection, Z. J. Loussac Library. Anchorage Public Library's research collection on Alaska's history and people, with guides to Alaska Native peoples and to genealogy that help memoir and family-history writers.
  • Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Awards. Open to artists in all disciplines living in Alaska: Project Awards of $10,000 reopen in 2027, and Fellowships pay $25,000.

Where we fit in: workshops and conferences shape the manuscript. We turn the finished draft into a book that can be ordered anywhere, which matters when your readers live from Ketchikan to the North Slope.

Selling Your Book in Alaska: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

No state sales tax, but many local ones. The Alaska Remote Seller Sales Tax Commission explains that Alaska has no state sales tax but lets local governments levy their own, and more than 100 of the state's 165 communities collect one.

Selling in person. A sale you make face to face, such as a signing in Juneau or a table at a holiday bazaar, is a physical-presence sale. The Commission says that tax goes directly to the local jurisdiction, not through its remote-seller system, so call the city or borough before the event to ask about registration and the local rate.

Online stores. Remote sellers and marketplace facilitators that reach $100,000 in gross sales into Alaska must register with the Commission; the 200-transaction test ended on January 1, 2025. Orders placed through the big online bookstores are handled by the store.

Federal rules, the same in Bethel as in Boston. Your ISBN (bought from Bowker), your copyright registration (filed with the U.S. Copyright Office) and any Library of Congress Control Number (requested before publication through the Preassigned Control Number program) are federal matters. We put the ISBN in your own name or imprint.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Your city or borough and an accountant can confirm what applies to you.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Alaska

Three paths lead to a published book. A traditional publisher pays, edits and holds the publishing rights; a hybrid publisher charges you for part of the process; a self-publishing service charges for its work and hands you a book you fully own.

The University of Alaska Press, now published through the University Press of Colorado, takes submissions in politics and history, Native languages and cultures, natural history, memoir, poetry, fiction and translation, all with an emphasis on Alaska. For writers comparing book publishers in Alaska, it is the place to start on the traditional side.

Ask every service the same three questions: Is the ISBN registered to me? Do the store accounts and royalties come to me? What is the written total? With Kinetic Digital Publishers the ISBN, the accounts and the royalties are all yours.

Distance Should Not Decide Whether Your Book Gets Published

Working with a publishing team used to mean living near one. Today every stage, from the first editorial call to the final proof, can run online, and print copies are made on demand and shipped, so living off the road system is no obstacle.

Alaska books also raise their own production questions. Photo-heavy books about flying, fishing or the backcountry need color planned early, because color interiors cost more to print. Books about Alaska Native history or culture need care with sources, oral history, place names and language, and you keep full editorial control over how your community is represented.

Review stages can run by email, so the time difference with the Lower 48 never leaves a draft waiting for a shared office hour.

Alaska's Literary Heritage

Alaska names a State Writer Laureate. The Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Humanities Forum chose Vera Starbard (T'set Kwei), a Tlingit and Dena'ina playwright, magazine editor and Emmy-nominated television writer, for 2024-2026.

Since 1993 the Alaska Center for the Book has also honored more than 115 people and institutions with its Contributions to Literacy in Alaska awards.

Not from the state, because Alaska has no state sales tax. More than 100 local governments do collect one, and in-person sales are taxed by the community where they happen, outside the remote-seller system. Ask the city or borough hosting your signing whether you must register. This is general information, not tax advice.

49 Writers runs classes and public readings, and the Alaska Writers Guild offers critique groups, quarterly contests and a fall conference with agents and editors. Alaska Book Week, around the first week of October, fills calendars statewide with readings and panels.

Yes. The University of Alaska Press, now part of the University Press of Colorado, considers history, Native languages and cultures, natural history, memoir, poetry, fiction and translation with an Alaska emphasis, and its submission guidelines are online. For most other projects, self-publishing is the usual route.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Alaska authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Every review step works over email and video, so a slow connection in the Bush just means a little more patience.

Yes, through a private foundation. The Rasmuson Foundation's Individual Artist Awards cover artists in all disciplines who live in Alaska: Project Awards of $10,000 reopen in 2027, and Fellowships of $25,000 support a year of focused work. The Alaska Writers Guild's Lin Halterman Grant also gave each 2025 winner $500.

Publishing packages start at $299, the same as anywhere in the country. Color photo sections, maps and long developmental edits raise the total, while a straightforward novel stays closer to the base. Our publishing packages and the [full cost breakdown](/blogs/cost-of-publishing-a-book-in-2026-complete-breakdown) show where the money goes, and a free consultation gives you the exact figure.

Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
