Maryland Book Publishing Services for Authors With Credentials to Protect
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers book publishing services in Maryland, from editing to self-publishing setup, for authors in Baltimore, Frederick and Gaithersburg. A standard manuscript is typically ready in 4-8 weeks, packages begin at $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties stay with you. We work by phone and video call, and our head office in Dallas, Texas, welcomes visits.
Maryland writers include many people whose name carries weight: clinicians and researchers in the orbit of the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, poets working toward a first full-length collection, and essayists writing about Baltimore. For these writers, accuracy is a given and readability is the job.

Maryland Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Where Maryland writers find classes, readers and stages:
- Maryland Center for the Book. A program of Maryland Humanities and the state's Library of Congress Center for the Book affiliate. It brings two Maryland "Great Reads" to the National Book Festival, held August 22 in 2026.
- One Maryland One Book. A statewide book club with free events and an author tour each fall. The 2026 pick is No Sense in Wishing , Lawrence Burney's essays on Black music and Baltimore.
- The Writer's Center , Bethesda. Started in late 1976 by writers and small-press publishers, it runs hundreds of workshops a year in every genre and publishes Poet Lore , which it calls America's oldest poetry magazine.
- Enoch Pratt Free Library. Baltimore's library system lists Writers LIVE! author talks and "Writing @ the Pratt" programs such as the Writer's Club at the Herring Run branch, which meets on Monday evenings every other month.
- CityLit Festival , Baltimore. CityLit Project's spring festival; the next daylong event is April 17, 2027, with the Maryland Center for History and Culture.
- Gaithersburg Book Festival. A one-day festival at Bohrer Park, next held May 15, 2027.
- The Ivy Bookshop. An independent store at 5928 Falls Road in Baltimore that hosts author events.
- Maryland State Arts Council. Its Grants for Artists program pays $2,500 to independent artists, literary artists included, who are Maryland residents aged 18 or older and not enrolled in a degree program. The FY2026 round is closed.
Where we fit in: workshops sharpen the writing and festivals find the readers. The stretch in between, from final edit to a listed book, is the part we handle.
Selling Your Book in Maryland: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Online stores. Under House Bill 1301, Maryland has required marketplace facilitators to collect sales and use tax on sales made through their platforms since October 1, 2019. Remote sellers with more than $100,000 in Maryland sales, or 200 or more separate transactions, have collected since October 1, 2018. Orders placed through the big online bookstores are taxed by the store.
Book fairs and signings. Tax-General §11-712 says no one may engage in the business of a retail vendor in Maryland without a license from the Comptroller. If your event sales start to look like a small book business, talk to the Comptroller's office about a sales and use tax license before you set up a table.
The rate. Tax-General §11-104 sets the general rate at 6 cents on the dollar, or 6%, and the Tax Foundation's 2026 midyear figures show no local sales tax in Maryland.
Federal paperwork. ISBNs are sold by Bowker through isbn.org, copyright claims go to the U.S. Copyright Office, and asking the Library of Congress for a control number is your choice. A Maryland address changes none of these.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Comptroller of Maryland or an accountant.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Maryland
Book publishers in Maryland fall into the same three groups as anywhere else. A traditional press buys your book and controls it; a hybrid publisher asks you to share costs; a self-publishing service, which is what we are, charges for its work and leaves you as the publisher of record.
Two Baltimore presses are worth knowing. Apprentice House Press at Loyola University Maryland is run by students and reviews many genres, but not poetry, children's, self-help or previously self-published books; check its site for the next submission period. CityLit Press, begun in 2010, publishes chapbooks by its Harriss Poetry Prize winners and select literary and regional titles that larger houses may pass over.
Whoever you hire, ask three questions first: whose name is on the ISBN and the store accounts, who receives the royalties, and is the full price in writing. With us, the ISBN, the store accounts and the royalties are yours.
Rigor and Readability Are Not Opposites
Expert manuscripts tend to over-qualify, open with too much background and assume the reader already cares. Each habit loses readers in the first twenty pages, and none of them takes a loss of accuracy to fix.
Our editors work on the order of ideas, the weight of the caveats and the pace of the opening chapters, while every claim stays exactly as true as you wrote it. Citations, footnotes and a bibliography are set up in one style at the start and typeset correctly in print and ebook, where notes behave differently.
If your employer or agency has to approve the text, we schedule that review after editing and before design, so the approved text is the text that gets typeset.

Maryland's Literary Heritage
Edgar Allan Poe lived at 203 North Amity Street in Baltimore from about 1833 until 1835, when he left for Richmond to edit the Southern Literary Messenger . The house is a National Historic Landmark, run today by Poe Baltimore, and tours cover the short stories he wrote there. He shared the house with his aunt, Maria Clemm, and his cousin Virginia, to whom he later proposed by letter.

Possibly. Maryland law says no one may do business as a retail vendor without a license from the Comptroller, and the general rate is 6%. Whether a few signings count is a question for the Comptroller of Maryland, so ask before your first event. This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
The Writer's Center in Bethesda runs hundreds of workshops a year, and the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore hosts a Writer's Club and Writers LIVE! talks. For festivals, the CityLit Festival in Baltimore and the Gaithersburg Book Festival both return in spring 2027.
Yes. Apprentice House Press, the student-run publisher at Loyola University Maryland, has set submission periods (check its site) and does not take poetry, children's or self-help books. CityLit Press in Baltimore publishes mainly through its Harriss Poetry Prize. If neither fits your book, self-publishing is the practical route.
No, our head office is in Dallas, Texas, and authors are welcome to meet us there in person. We work with Maryland authors by phone and video call, so a Baltimore or Rockville author never has to travel for a project to move forward.
Yes. We place your clearance or approval step after editing and before design, so the text your reviewer signs off is the text that gets typeset. Nothing has to be reworked after approval, and the schedule simply pauses while the review is underway.
Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
