South Carolina Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
South Carolina offers writers stages, contests and one rare thing: a state program that lets local authors sell their books.
- South Carolina Center for the Book. Based at the South Carolina State Library in Columbia, the Library of Congress affiliate runs Speaker at the Center, free talks where local authors discuss and sell their most recent books at the State Library and public libraries around the state.
- Poetry Society of South Carolina. Running since 1920, it holds spring and fall contests and hosts readings at venues such as the Charleston Library Society and the Baxter-Patrick James Island Library.
- Hub City Writers Project. In Spartanburg, its Writing Club meets monthly in person for every kind of writer, alongside workshops through the year and an annual writers' conference.
- YALLFest. Charleston's young adult festival is held each November. It is free to enter, with three ticketed headliner events, and most venues sit within three blocks of Blue Bicycle Books at 420 King St.
- Conroy Festival. The Pat Conroy Literary Center holds a yearly festival in Beaufort, with author discussions and writers' workshops.
- Hub City Bookshop. On Spartanburg's town square, it was named Independent Bookstore of the Year in 2019 by the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance and hosts author readings.
A note on grants: the South Carolina Arts Commission awards $10,000 Individual Artist Fellowships to individual artists, and recent fellows include prose writers and spoken-word poets.
Where we fit in: Speaker at the Center is built around recently published books. Once yours is edited, designed and live, you have something to talk about and copies to sell.
Selling Your Book in South Carolina: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
The 6% rate. The South Carolina Department of Revenue sets a 6% statewide Sales & Use Tax and requires a Retail License, which costs $50, for retail sales, including online sales shipped to South Carolina addresses. Local taxes add between 0% and 3%, and 43 of the 46 counties levy one.
Festivals and fairs. The Department's events guide splits events in two. At a free-entry Retail Event, you need a Retail License. At a Special Event that charges admission, a vendor selling in South Carolina only once in 24 months skips the license but files Forms FC-1 and FS-152. Selling without a required license can bring fines of up to $500 each time.
Online stores. Out-of-state sellers with more than $100,000 of South Carolina sales in a year have needed a Retail License since October 1, 2018.
Federal rules. ISBNs come from Bowker (isbn.org), copyright goes through the U.S. Copyright Office, and the Preassigned Control Number program for a Library of Congress number is optional.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in South Carolina
Book publishers in South Carolina fit three models. Traditional presses pay for publication and keep a tight list. Hybrid firms ask authors to fund part of the work. Self-publishing services are paid for their work and leave the author as publisher.
The University of South Carolina Press in Columbia takes emailed proposals on Southern history, African American studies, civil rights, food studies and military life, replies within six weeks, and no longer publishes fiction, poetry or children's books. Hub City Press in Spartanburg, founded in 1995, reads full manuscripts during open calls and runs the South Carolina Novel Series, which pays $1,500 plus publication but generally rejects self-published titles.
So decide before you self-publish a novel. Whoever you choose, get it in writing that the ISBN and accounts are yours, that royalties come straight to you, and what each service costs.
Written for the Family, Built for Readers
The most common structural problem in a family book is that it assumes the reader already knows everyone. A stranger needs orientation in the first few pages: who these people were, when they lived and why it matters.
We fix that without stripping out the detail that makes the book worth having. For Lowcountry and Gullah Geechee histories, from a culture the National Park Service notes Congress recognized with a heritage corridor in 2006, language, spelling and how speech is set on the page are agreed with you up front and applied consistently. For a veteran's memoir, we can schedule a clearance or review step between editing and design where one is required.
Then the book is edited, designed and typeset to hold its own on a shop shelf, with expanded distribution so shops and libraries can order it.

Yes, two. The University of South Carolina Press accepts emailed nonfiction proposals on Southern history, civil rights, food and military subjects, but no fiction, poetry or children's books. Hub City Press in Spartanburg reads full manuscripts during its open calls. Both are selective, and self-publishing remains open for everything else.
Generally not. The series, run by the South Carolina Arts Commission with Hub City Press, says it usually cannot accept previously published books, including self-published ones. It is open to writers who have lived in the state for a year, so submit first if you want a chance at the $1,500 prize.
