Indiana Book Publishing Services Without the Runaround
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, provides book publishing services in Indiana, with self-publishing support for writers in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and Evansville. A standard project takes 4–8 weeks, publishing packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. Our head office in Dallas, Texas works with Hoosier authors by phone and video call.
We are set up for Indiana authors who know a subject from the inside: plant managers and tradespeople in a state with more than 294,000 manufacturing workers, farm families in a state where 94% of farms are family-owned or operated, and faculty and alumni of Purdue, Indiana University and Notre Dame. We help turn that working knowledge into a finished book.

Indiana Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Indiana makes unusual room for local and self-published authors. These are the places to begin.
- Indiana Center for the Book. A program of the Indiana State Library and the state's affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. It works with Indiana Humanities to choose Indiana's Great Reads for the National Book Festival and runs the Statehood Day essay contest.
- Indiana Writers Center , Indianapolis. Founded in 1979, it offers classes and critique groups, free for members and $5 a meeting for others, and publishes the online journal Flying Island.
- SCBWI Indiana. The regional chapter for children's book writers and illustrators, with in-person and virtual events and critique groups.
- The Indianapolis Public Library Local Author Fair. Up to 30 free tables for authors who live or work in Indiana, held during Indiana Humanities' fall festival, Proof: A Midwest Lit Fest.
- Carmel Clay Public Library. Its Local Author Fair openly welcomes self-published authors, and residents can donate a copy to its Local Author Collection.
- Bloomington Book Festival. A fall festival; check the festival site for this year's events.
- Indy Reads , Indianapolis. A nonprofit bookstore at 1066 Virginia Ave that stocks self-published and print-on-demand titles by Indiana-affiliated authors on consignment and takes event requests at least six weeks ahead.
- Indiana Arts Commission. Individuals can apply: its On-Ramp program accepts literature among its disciplines and offers grants of up to $2,000 to Indiana residents 18 and over. The FY26 round has closed.
Where we fit in: these groups and fairs give you readers and a table to sell from. We make sure the book on that table is edited, designed and properly listed.
Selling Your Book in Indiana: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
One rate statewide. The Indiana Department of Revenue says the sales tax for the entire state is 7%. Indiana counties levy other taxes, such as innkeeper's and food and beverage taxes, but there is no separate local sales tax to add to a book sale.
Fairs and signings. The Department's bulletin on transient merchants says anyone making retail sales in Indiana, even temporarily, needs a Registered Retail Merchant Certificate first. You register through INBiz and pay a one-time $25 fee per location, then file sales tax returns on Form ST-103. A county may require its own transient merchant license as well, so check with the county auditor where the event is held.
Online stores. Since July 1, 2019, marketplace facilitators have collected Indiana sales tax on their sellers' sales into the state. Since January 1, 2024, the only threshold is $100,000 in Indiana sales.
Federal, not state. Bowker, the U.S. ISBN agency, issues ISBNs; the U.S. Copyright Office handles registration; and the Library of Congress Control Number is optional.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Indiana
Traditional presses pay you and keep publishing rights; self-publishing services are paid by you and leave every right in your hands; hybrid publishers charge fees and take a share, so their contracts deserve a slow read.
Indiana's traditional options are mostly university presses with focused lists. Indiana University Press in Bloomington welcomes proposals for scholarly books and nonfiction about the Midwest and Indiana, but does not acknowledge unsolicited proposals. Purdue University Press takes emailed proposals, including regional works about Indiana and Purdue. The University of Notre Dame Press does not invite memoirs.

Straight Answers, Then the Work
We start by reading a sample and telling you what the manuscript actually needs. Sometimes that is a full structural edit. Sometimes it is a proofread and production. We say which, and we quote for that, not for a bundle you did not ask for.
After that, the order is fixed and the reasons are plain. Editing comes before formatting, because formatting locks the text in place. The cover is settled before launch, because it is the first thing a reader sees in a store listing.
The approach fits practical books especially well: a manual drawn from decades in a trade, the history of a family farm, a guide for a congregation. They need accuracy and clean production more than reinvention, and we treat them that way.

Indiana's Literary Heritage
Indianapolis honors one of its own at the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, dedicated to the city-born novelist, artist and teacher. In Crawfordsville, the General Lew Wallace Study & Museum preserves the study Wallace designed and built in 1895; his Ben-Hur became the best-selling novel of the nineteenth century, and the museum now hosts a yearly Hoosier Author Fair.
