Alabama Book Publishing Services for the Story You Already Have
Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company that has served authors since 2014, and our book publishing services in Alabama are open to writers in Huntsville, Mobile, Birmingham and every town between. Expect editing, cover design and self-publishing setup in about 4–8 weeks, packages from $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties kept. We work from our head office in Dallas, Texas, by phone and video call.
Alabama has deep storytelling roots, from the courthouse town where To Kill a Mockingbird is set to a statewide writers' group that dates to 1923. We work with the writers those traditions produce: novelists and poets, memoirists, family historians and authors of faith-based books.

Alabama Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Alabama's statewide writers' group has existed continuously for more than a century, and the state's universities and libraries keep the calendar full.
- Alabama Center for the Book. Housed in the University of Alabama Libraries in Tuscaloosa, it is the state's Library of Congress affiliate and chooses Alabama's Great Reads titles for the National Book Festival.
- Alabama Writers Cooperative. Organized in 1923 as the Alabama Writers' Conclave, it calls itself one of the oldest continuing writers' organizations in the country. It holds an annual conference (Birmingham hosted the 2026 one in September), a writing contest and workshops.
- Third Thursday Literary Series, Auburn. Evening readings backed by Auburn University's humanities center, its English department and the state arts council; the August 2026 reading featured local writers.
- Huntsville-Madison County Library Foundation. Several author events a year, each with a reading or talk, questions from the audience and a book signing, with proceeds supporting the public library.
- Monroeville Literary Festival. Now 30 years old, it returns to the Old Courthouse Museum in Monroeville from February 25 to 27, 2027.
- Page & Palette, Fairhope. A fourth-generation, family-owned bookstore and a Fairhope landmark for more than 50 years, hosting author events from local, up-and-coming names to famous visitors.
- Alabama State Council on the Arts. Individual writers can apply for Literary Arts Fellowships in poetry or prose, worth $7,500 each.
Where we fit in: a conference or a reading series gets your work heard. We make sure there is a finished, well-made book to sell at the table afterward.
Selling Your Book in Alabama: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Four percent, before local tax. The Alabama Department of Revenue lists the general state sales tax rate at 4%. Cities and counties add their own sales taxes, and the Department publishes those local rates and codes separately.
Selling at events. Alabama's sales tax is a privilege tax on retail sales of tangible personal property, collected by the seller from the customer and sent to the state, so a copy sold from your table at a festival is a retail sale. Ask the Department whether you need a sales tax account before your first event, and check whether the host city requires a business license.
Online stores. Since January 1, 2019, marketplace facilitators with $250,000 or more in Alabama sales must either collect the state's simplified sellers use tax, a flat 8%, on their sellers' orders or report those sales to the Department.
Handled nationally, not in Montgomery. Bowker sells ISBNs, the U.S. Copyright Office registers copyrights, and the Library of Congress assigns a Control Number before publication, if you want one, through its Preassigned Control Number program. We register the ISBN in your own name or imprint.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Questions about your own sales go to the Alabama Department of Revenue or a tax adviser.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Alabama
If you are comparing publishing companies in Alabama, first decide which of three models you need. Traditional publishers invest their own money and take a share of the rights; hybrid publishers charge the author part of the cost; self-publishing services do the work for a fee and the book stays entirely yours.
On the traditional side, the University of Alabama Press in Tuscaloosa welcomes proposals for scholarly and trade manuscripts that fit its list. You send a cover letter, a prospectus, a CV and a sample chapter or two to the right acquisitions editor.
Before you pay anyone, confirm three points: the ISBN and store accounts are in your name, royalties come straight to you, and the full cost is written down. As a self-publishing service, Kinetic Digital Publishers puts the first two in your name from day one.
Writing the Book Is the Half You Can Do Alone
For most Alabama authors, the writing is the part they can do on their own. The harder half begins afterward, when a manuscript has to be edited, designed, formatted to each store's specifications and put in front of readers.
That is the half we take on. A family history built from letters and photographs needs a careful layout. A book of sermons or devotions needs shaping for readers outside the congregation. A first novel needs an honest edit before anyone designs a cover.
Publishing day is a start, not a finish line. Book marketing and an author website help the right readers find the book, in Alabama and well beyond it.
