New York Book Publishing Services for Authors Not Waiting on a Yes

Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company working with authors since 2014, offering book publishing services in New York to self-publishing writers in New York City, Buffalo and Rochester. Books needing standard editing, formatting and a cover are usually ready in 4–8 weeks. You keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and packages start at $299. We work by phone and video from our head office in Dallas, Texas.

This page is written for a few kinds of New York writers: novelists done waiting on a query inbox, people writing about Hudson Valley towns, Adirondack trails or upstate food, poets building a first chapbook, and children's authors with a picture book in mind.

New York Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

New York has more literary infrastructure than any one author could use. These are reliable places to start, from Long Island to Lake Erie.

  • Empire State Center for the Book. Run by the New York Library Association, it is the state's partner of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress and runs the New York State Writers Hall of Fame.
  • New York State Writers Institute , Albany. Based at the University at Albany. Most of its author events are free and open to the public, and it runs the Albany Book Festival and a Community Writers Workshop.
  • Just Buffalo Literary Center. Home of the BABEL author series and the Just Buffalo Writing Center, plus its own writing fellowships.
  • Writers & Books , Rochester. Adult workshops and weekly drop-ins at 740 University Ave. Its Rochester Reads sessions also run in area public libraries, including the Gates Public Library and the Winton Branch.
  • Hudson Valley Writers Center , Sleepy Hollow. Workshops, readings, manuscript consultations and the Slapering Hol Press chapbook contest for poets.
  • Brooklyn Book Festival. Held each September at Brooklyn Borough Hall, with a Children's Day and "Bookends" events across all five boroughs.
  • Talking Leaves...Books , Buffalo. Hosts author events and consigns books by authors living in Western New York: a $10 yearly membership, a shelf spot for about three months, and 60% of the retail price to the author.

Grants: individual artists can receive New York State Council on the Arts Support for Artists funding, but only by applying through a prequalified fiscal sponsor.

Where we fit in: a workshop sharpens the writing and a festival finds readers. We turn the finished draft into a book a store like Talking Leaves can actually shelve.

Selling Your Book in New York: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Book fairs and readings. New York's Tax Department says anyone selling taxable goods must register before making sales, even a temporary vendor or someone who sells once a year. You register through New York Business Express at least 20 days before you start and receive a Certificate of Authority (regular or temporary). You can't legally make taxable sales until it arrives.

Rates. The state rate is 4%. Counties, cities and school districts add local tax, and the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District adds another 0.375%, so a table in Manhattan and one in Buffalo charge different totals. Look up the address on the New York sales tax rates page.

Marketplaces. Since June 1, 2019, marketplace providers collect New York tax on the sales they facilitate; out-of-state providers register once they pass $500,000 and 100 sales over the previous four quarters. New York adds a catch: a seller who meets the registration rules on their own must still register and file, even when the marketplace remits the tax.

Federal, not state. Your ISBN comes from Bowker, copyright goes through the U.S. Copyright Office, and the Library of Congress Control Number is an optional extra.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in New York

A traditional house pays an advance and takes the rights. A hybrid publisher charges you and splits royalties. A self-publishing service is paid for production, and the book and its income stay yours.

Two university presses in the state take direct proposals. SUNY Press in Albany accepts emailed proposals, and its Excelsior Editions imprint publishes general-interest books on New York history, nature, food and travel. Syracuse University Press takes a proposal form by email and runs a New York State and Regional Studies series, but publishes fiction, memoir and poetry only through invited series.

Hiring help instead? Confirm the ISBN and store accounts will be in your name, royalties will reach you directly, and the quote is in writing.

Trade Standard, Without the Gatekeeping

A reader judges a book by its edit, its cover and its type, not by the logo on the spine. That's where we put the work, in the same order a trade house would.

A structural edit settles what the book is. A line edit and a proofread clean every page. The cover is designed against the books it will sit next to in its category, the interior is typeset properly rather than poured into a template, and the launch plan covers categories, keywords, the description and review outreach.

From Manhattan to Buffalo, your book then goes live on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution, and the royalties are paid to you.

In New York it is called a Certificate of Authority, and the Tax Department says even a once-a-year craft fair seller of taxable goods must register. Apply through New York Business Express at least 20 days before the event. Check your own situation with the Tax Department; this is not tax advice.

Try the author events, mostly free, at the New York State Writers Institute in Albany, workshops at Writers & Books in Rochester or the Hudson Valley Writers Center, and Just Buffalo's Writing Center. In September, the Brooklyn Book Festival brings writers and readers together across the city.

Some accept proposals without an agent. SUNY Press takes emailed nonfiction proposals, including New York regional books for its Excelsior Editions imprint. Syracuse University Press accepts proposals by email but takes fiction, memoir and poetry only through invited series, so novelists usually need an agent or self-publishing.

Yes, but not by applying alone. The New York State Council on the Arts funds individual artists through its Support for Artists program, and those applications must go through a prequalified fiscal sponsor, usually a nonprofit arts organization. The New York Foundation for the Arts also runs artist fellowships.

Publishing packages start at $299, and New York authors pay for the services their book needs, not a fixed fee.
