Virginia Book Publishing Services for Careers Worth Writing Down

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers book publishing services in Virginia to self-publishing authors from Virginia Beach and Norfolk to Richmond. A book needing standard editing, formatting and a cover takes 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties remain yours. We work from our head office in Dallas, Texas, by phone and video call.

Many Virginia manuscripts come out of a working life: a military or intelligence career, years in federal service or government contracting, a technical field explained for general readers. Others are regional histories and family stories rooted in the Tidewater, the Piedmont or the Shenandoah Valley.

Virginia Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Virginia has a strong network of literary organizations, much of it centered on Charlottesville and Richmond. Start with these five, then follow their calendars.

  • Virginia Center for the Book. A program of Virginia Humanities in Charlottesville, with year-round author events, literacy resources and book arts programs.
  • Virginia Festival of the Book , Charlottesville. The 2027 festival moves to April 1–4. Authors from Virginia or anywhere can submit books; the 2027 deadline closed September 8, 2026, and submitted books must be available through booksellers by March 31, 2027.
  • James River Writers , Richmond. Runs the annual James River Writers Conference, master classes, The Writing Show panels, Nuts & Bolts workshops and monthly write-ins, plus a weekly Thursday Night Writes session in Richmond.
  • Library of Virginia , Richmond. The state library at 800 East Broad Street hosts the Virginia Literary Awards, an annual gala it calls its signature event.
  • New Dominion Bookshop , Charlottesville. On the Historic Downtown Mall, it describes itself as the oldest independent bookseller in Virginia and hosts regular author readings and signings throughout the year.

Grants: the Virginia Commission for the Arts offers one-time Artist Catalyst Grants of up to $500 to practicing artists who live in Virginia. A grant can cover a conference, a website or marketing materials; check the Commission's site for the current cycle.

Where we fit in: a conference or a festival panel gives your book an audience. We get it edited, designed and listed with booksellers in time to meet it.

Selling Your Book in Virginia: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Rates vary by place. The general rate is 5.3% in most of Virginia, 6% in Central Virginia, Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia, 6.3% in a handful of localities and 7% in James City County, Williamsburg and York County. The Virginia Tax retail sales and use tax page has the full list and a locality lookup.

Book fairs are not "occasional sales." Virginia's regulations exempt a seller who makes sales on three or fewer occasions a year, but sales at fairs, flea markets and similar events don't count as occasional sales. Anyone who meets the definition of a dealer must register and receives a Sales Tax Certificate of Registration.

Online. Since July 1, 2019, remote sellers and marketplace facilitators register once they pass $100,000 in Virginia sales or 200 transactions a year. If all your Virginia sales go through a marketplace's platform, you generally don't need to register for those sales.

Federal steps. An ISBN from Bowker, U.S. copyright registration and the optional Library of Congress Control Number don't depend on living in Virginia.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Virginia

Your options are traditional publishing, where a press buys the rights; hybrid publishing, where you pay and share royalties; and self-publishing services, where you pay for the work and own everything.

The state's best-known university press is the University of Virginia Press in Charlottesville. It asks authors to query the right acquisitions editor and publishes American history and government, architectural and environmental history, and trade books of regional interest. It's a good fit for a well-researched Virginia history, but not usually for a memoir or novel.

Before you sign with any publishing company in Virginia, confirm who owns the ISBN and store accounts, who is paid the royalties, and that the price is in a written quote.

Clearance, Editing and Production, in the Right Order

Some books need a review by an employer, agency or command before they can be published. When that review happens after typesetting, every approved change means paying to lay the book out again.

So we schedule it in the order that saves money: structural work first, then editing, then your review and clearance of the edited text, and only then design and typesetting of the approved version. You submit the manuscript for review yourself, and we work only from what comes back approved.

From Northern Virginia to Hampton Roads to the Shenandoah, the finished book is published on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution, with your rights and royalties intact.

Virginia's Literary Heritage

Edgar Allan Poe grew up in Richmond: after his mother died there in December 1811, the two-year-old was taken in by John and Frances Allan, and the city's Poe Museum now tells his story. Richmond is also home to the Library of Virginia's annual Virginia Literary Awards, which celebrate the state's writers each year at a gala the Library calls its signature event.

Virginia's tax regulation treats sales at fairs and flea markets as regular sales, not exempt occasional sales, even if you sell only a few times a year. Dealers register with Virginia Tax for a Sales Tax Certificate of Registration. Check with Virginia Tax first; this is not tax advice.

In Richmond, James River Writers runs a yearly conference, master classes and weekly write-ins. In Charlottesville, the Virginia Center for the Book hosts events all year and the Virginia Festival of the Book each spring. The Library of Virginia's literary awards gala is another place to meet the state's writers.

The University of Virginia Press accepts queries to its acquisitions editors, mainly for history, government and regional trade nonfiction. For fiction, memoir or poetry, Virginia authors usually look to national publishers through an agent, or self-publish.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Virginia authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

It sits between editing and design. You submit the edited manuscript for review, and we typeset only the approved text, so nothing has to be reworked or paid for twice. If the review asks for changes, we edit those passages before layout begins.

Our publishing packages begin at $299, and a Virginia author's total depends on the editing, design and marketing the manuscript calls for. The publishing packages page shows what each level includes, and our [full cost breakdown](/blogs/cost-of-publishing-a-book-in-2026-complete-breakdown) covers the costs authors most often overlook.

Yes. Your rights stay 100% yours. We work on a service basis, the store accounts are in your name, and royalties are paid directly to you.
