Kinetic Digital Publishers · Wyoming
Wyoming Book Publishing Services for the Least-Populous State's Biggest Stories
Looking for book publishing services in Wyoming? Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers editing, cover design and self-publishing to writers in Cheyenne, Casper and Laramie. Books needing standard editing, formatting and a cover are usually ready in 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. Our head office in Dallas, Texas, works with you by phone and video call.
Wyoming books often grow out of working lives and open country. The state's 2025 Great Reads picks were a ranch-family memoir and a children's book about Steamboat, the bucking horse that became the state's symbol, and a Wyoming press has built its list on Old West history and poetry.

Wyoming Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Wyoming's literary life runs through its libraries and a few long-running statewide groups.
- Wyoming Center for the Book. The state's Library of Congress affiliate moved from the Wyoming State Library, its home since 1995, to Wyoming Humanities in Laramie in 2021. It runs Letters About Literature and picks Wyoming's titles for the National Book Festival.
- Wyoming Writers, Inc. Started in 1974 after a writing workshop, the statewide group holds an annual conference whose faculty includes literary agents and publishers, runs an annual contest and keeps a list of local writer groups.
- Laramie County Library System, Cheyenne. Its Local Author Celebration fills the Cottonwood Room at the Cheyenne Library with local and regional writers of romance, Wyoming history, poetry, memoir and children's books.
- Booklovers Bash. The Laramie County Library Foundation's annual evening began in a library parking lot and now draws sold-out crowds of 450, held in Cheyenne.
- Wind City Books, Casper. A bookstore at 136 E 2nd Street that hosts signings with local authors.
- Wyoming Arts Council. Individual writers can apply. Creative Writing Fellowships go each year to one poet, one creative nonfiction writer and one fiction writer, and two memorial writing awards each pay $1,000 to a Wyoming writer.
Where we fit in: a conference critique or a library author table tells you whether the book works. When it does, we handle the edit, the cover and the store listings.
Selling Your Book in Wyoming: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Four percent, plus local pennies. According to the Wyoming Excise Tax Division's tax FAQs, sales tax combines a mandatory statewide 4% rate with any voter-approved local "pennies," so the total depends on where the sale happens.
Craft shows and markets. Next to the regular vendor license, the Division keeps a separate application for occasional sales by non-licensed vendors, such as craft shows and boutique markets. If a holiday market or book fair is your only outlet, ask the Division which form fits before the event.
Online stores. Marketplace facilitators have had to collect Wyoming tax since July 1, 2019, and since July 1, 2024 the test is simply more than $100,000 in Wyoming sales in the current or previous year, according to the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board. On orders placed through a large online bookstore, the store collects the tax.
Some things stop at no state line. Copyright is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, ISBNs are sold by Bowker, and the Library of Congress hands out Control Numbers before publication through its Preassigned Control Number program. The ISBN we set up carries your own name or imprint.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice. For your specific case, ask the Wyoming Excise Tax Division or an accountant.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Wyoming
There are three ways to get a book out. Traditional houses pay for publication and take the rights, so they choose carefully. Hybrid outfits split the bill with you. Self-publishing services charge a fee and leave every right and every royalty with the author.
Among book publishers in Wyoming, High Plains Press near Glendo publishes about four books a year, focused on Old West history, plus one title a year in its "Poetry of the American West" series; poets query with a ten-poem sample. Next door, the South Dakota Historical Society Press also considers nonfiction about Wyoming people and events.
Whoever you talk to, get three answers in writing: who owns the ISBN and the store logins, who collects the royalties, and what the total price will be. Kinetic Digital Publishers is a self-publishing service, so the ISBN, the logins and the royalties are yours.
A Small Population Is Not a Small Readership
Wyoming is the least-populous state, with an estimated 588,753 residents in 2025, and even Cheyenne, its largest city, has about 66,500 people, according to the Census Bureau. A book written only for buyers inside the state would hit a ceiling fast.
Most of your readers will probably live elsewhere, especially for books about ranching, energy, wilderness or guiding. Distribution is national from launch day, so the real job is positioning: the right categories, a cover that holds up at thumbnail size and a description written for someone who has never driven I-80.
We handle that alongside the editing, and print-on-demand means there is no inventory to finance or store.

Wyoming's Literary Heritage
Each year Wyoming chooses two books for the Great Reads from Great Places program at the National Book Festival. The 2025 picks were Mark E. Miller's A Sometimes Paradise: Reflections on Life in a Wyoming Ranch Family and A Home for Steamboat by Casey Rislov and Zachary Pullen, both written and illustrated by Wyomingites.
Steamboat has his own adult book, too: High Plains Press tells the story of the bucking horse that became the symbol of Wyoming.

A few, mostly for Western nonfiction and poetry. High Plains Press near Glendo publishes about four books a year on Old West history plus one poetry title, and it takes queries. The South Dakota Historical Society Press also considers nonfiction about Wyoming. Fiction and memoir usually go through an agent or self-publishing.
No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Wyoming authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Edits, cover rounds and proofs all happen online, which suits authors on ranches and in small towns.
Yes. The Wyoming Arts Council awards Creative Writing Fellowships every year in poetry, creative nonfiction and fiction. Two memorial awards, the Neltje Blanchan award for writing inspired by nature and the Frank Nelson Doubleday award for writing by a woman, each pay $1,000, and the Council's site lists the current deadline.
Publishing packages start at $299. A photo-heavy ranch history costs more to produce than a text-only novel, because image work, color interiors and longer edits add time.
