New Mexico Book Publishing Services for Books About More Than One Culture
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company working with authors since 2014, provides book publishing services in New Mexico for writers in Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Santa Fe. We edit, design and handle self-publishing setup, usually in 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and you can meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.
New Mexico manuscripts often carry more than one language and more than one history. They include writers working on Native, Hispano and borderlands stories, scientists and engineers from the Albuquerque research community writing about their careers, and artists and photographers who need a book that looks as good as the work inside it.

New Mexico Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
New Mexico is a big state with a close-knit writing scene. Here is where we suggest authors start.
- New Mexico Center for the Book. Run by the New Mexico State Library and affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book, it promotes the state's literary heritage through the National Book Festival and the New Mexico Poetry Center.
- SouthWest Writers , Albuquerque. A nonprofit that began in the early 1980s as New Mexico Romance Writers and opened to every genre in 1984. Members meet twice a month, take classes and workshops, and enter an annual writing contest.
- Cherry Hills Library , Albuquerque. The public library lists a Cherry Hills Writes group on the second Monday of the month and a critique session on the fourth Monday, both from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Check the library calendar before you go.
- Santa Fe International Literary Festival. Authors, thinkers and readers meet at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center downtown. The next festival is listed for May 14–16, 2027.
- Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse , Santa Fe. This independent shop at 202 Galisteo Street keeps a busy calendar of in-store author talks, including conversations with New Mexican novelists.
Grants: New Mexico Arts funds nonprofits, government bodies, schools, colleges, universities and tribal government entities, and literary projects and publications qualify. Individual writers can't apply to its Grants Program, but a library, school or literary nonprofit you work with may be able to.
Where we fit in: a writing group sharpens the draft, and a festival or bookstore talk finds the readers. Our job sits in between: editing, cover, interior and publishing setup, so the book is finished before that audience asks for it.
Selling Your Book in New Mexico: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
No sales tax, but a gross receipts tax. New Mexico charges a gross receipts tax (GRT) on the business rather than a sales tax on the buyer; if you pass it on, show it as a separate line on the receipt. The state's share is 4.875%, and county and city rates bring the total to between 4.875% and 10.8125%, depending on where the sale takes place.
Book fairs, signings and festivals. The Taxation and Revenue Department has a "Special Event" process for vendors, and every vendor needs a New Mexico Business Tax Identification Number. Apply online through Taxpayer Access Point, tick "Special Event" when you pick a filing frequency, then file and pay by the 25th of the month after the event.
Online stores. Since July 1, 2019, marketplace providers and out-of-state sellers owe GRT once they pass $100,000 of taxable New Mexico receipts in the previous calendar year. Details are on the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department's gross receipts page.
Federal, not state. Your ISBN comes from Bowker, the U.S. ISBN agency, and copyright is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office. A Library of Congress Control Number is optional.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in New Mexico
There are three routes: a traditional or university press buys the rights and pays a royalty, a hybrid publisher splits costs with you, and a self-publishing service like ours is paid for the work while you keep the rights.
Close to home, the University of New Mexico Press reviews a query letter and book proposal sent to the right acquiring editor, but it doesn't take unsolicited poetry or children's books and can't answer every query. The Museum of New Mexico Press, part of the state's Department of Cultural Affairs, isn't accepting submissions at the moment.
Whoever you talk to, ask three questions first: whose name goes on the ISBN and the store accounts, do royalties come straight to you, and is the quote in writing? If a press passes, self-publishing services in New Mexico like ours are the other path.
Complexity Is the Point, Not the Problem
Many New Mexico books move between English, Spanish and an Indigenous language, or between Pueblo, Hispano and Anglo points of view, sometimes on a single page. A generic edit tends to flatten all of that into one voice. We work the other way.
Before editing starts, we agree a style sheet with you: which words go in italics, whether the book needs a glossary, and how accents, diacritical marks and place names are spelled. We then hold to it in every chapter and test the ebook files, where accented characters often break.
For a book about a Pueblo or tribal community, we can build time into the schedule for community review, and every decision about representation stays yours.

New Mexico's Literary Heritage
D.H. Lawrence owned only one property in his life: a 160-acre ranch about fifteen miles outside Taos, left to the University of New Mexico by Frieda Lawrence. The D.H. Lawrence Ranch is open to visitors. In Albuquerque, the county renamed the North Valley Library for Rudolfo Anaya, author of Bless Me, Ultima , on March 15, 2018, creating the Rudolfo Anaya North Valley Library.

Yes, within limits. The University of New Mexico Press accepts a query letter and proposal sent to the acquiring editor for your subject, though not unsolicited poetry or children's books. The Museum of New Mexico Press is closed to submissions for now. Fiction writers usually need a literary agent or choose to self-publish.

We settle it with you before editing begins: italics or not, a glossary or not, and how every accent and diacritical mark is spelled. The editor then applies those choices consistently, and we check the converted ebook, where accented letters are most likely to go wrong.
