Nebraska Book Publishing Services for Authors Who Want a Plan and a Price

For book publishing services in Nebraska, Kinetic Digital Publishers is a book publishing company since 2014, serving self-publishing authors in Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue and beyond. Packages start at $299, a typical book takes 4–8 weeks, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Nebraska authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Most authors start with two questions: what will it cost, and what do I get? Fair questions. Nebraska's writing community includes Guild members heading to the annual conference, poets eyeing the state book awards, and family and farm historians who want their book on a library shelf in Omaha. Whoever you are, you get a straight answer before any work begins.

Nebraska Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Nebraska offers its authors more structure than most states, from a century-old guild to library programs built for self-published books.

  • Nebraska Center for the Book. Based at the Nebraska Library Commission in Lincoln, it is the state's Library of Congress affiliate. Its Nebraska Book Awards accept professionally published, bound books with an ISBN by Nebraska authors or about Nebraska. In the 2026 cycle, entries ran from February 17 to May 31 at $40 per category.
  • Nebraska Celebration of Books , Lincoln. The Center's yearly festival in Lincoln, with a featured author each year. Book Award winners are invited to read and sign there.
  • Nebraska Writers Guild. Founded in 1925, the Guild holds an annual conference for indie and traditionally published writers alike. The 2027 conference in Omaha offers optional critique groups, bookstore space and agent pitch appointments.
  • Omaha Public Library, Authors & Writers. The library runs an adult writing club and treats any current or former Nebraska resident as a local author. Its collection team prefers to buy local authors' books and offers an online form to submit yours.
  • Nebraska Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowships. The program rotates by discipline, and the 2027 round is for literary arts: fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Check the Council's site for the deadline. Fellowships are worth up to $5,000.

Where we fit in: the Guild and the Center give you feedback, deadlines and an audience. We make sure the book you enter for an award or send to a library meets their bar: ISBN, professional binding, a clean interior and a cover that holds up on the shelf.

Selling Your Book in Nebraska: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

The rate. The Nebraska Department of Revenue sets the state sales and use tax rate at 5.5%. Many cities and villages add a local sales tax, so check the Department's rate finder for the town where you are selling.

Signings, craft shows and fairs. The Department's special events guide says sellers at temporary events such as fairs, craft shows and conventions must hold a Nebraska sales tax permit. You apply with Form 20, the permit may take two weeks to arrive, and you need it with you at the event. Organizers also send the Department a list of their sellers.

Online stores. Since April 1, 2019, marketplace platforms with more than $100,000 in Nebraska sales or 200 or more separate transactions must collect Nebraska and local sales tax on the orders they handle for others.

Federal rules. ISBNs are issued by Bowker and copyright registration happens at the U.S. Copyright Office. A Library of Congress Control Number is optional; the Preassigned Control Number program issues one before publication.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Nebraska Department of Revenue or an accountant.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Nebraska

Traditional publishers pay to produce a small number of books they select. Hybrid outfits ask the author to pay and still take a cut. Self-publishing services are hired help: you pay for specific work and keep the book.

The University of Nebraska Press is the state's major traditional house, and one open door for writers is the Prairie Schooner Book Prize: winners receive $3,000 and publication through the Press. It reads poetry and short-story collections (not novels) from January 15 to March 15. Prairie Schooner, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's quarterly since 1927, also takes unsolicited poetry, fiction and essays from September 1–15 and February 1–15.

Whoever you consider, get three answers in writing: who owns the ISBN and accounts, who is paid the royalties, and what every service costs. Kinetic Digital Publishers is a self-publishing service.

A Plan and a Price Before Any Work Starts

We read a sample of your manuscript before we quote. That tells us whether the book needs structural work, a straight line edit or simply production, and we quote only what it actually needs.

From there the stages run in a fixed order: editing, then design, then formatting, then the publishing setup. Keeping that order is what holds the cost down, because nothing gets designed twice. From Omaha to the Panhandle, the finished book goes out to Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo with the rights and royalties entirely yours.

The National Willa Cather Center there now hosts a two-week residency for writers, with a furnished room and $400 for provisions. You do not need a Nebraska connection to apply. The Nebraska Department of Revenue says sellers at special events such as fairs, craft shows and conventions need a Nebraska sales tax permit. Apply with Form 20, allow about two weeks, and bring the permit to the event. The state rate is 5.5%, and many towns add a local tax. This is general information, not tax advice.

The Nebraska Writers Guild, founded in 1925, is the place to start; its annual conference welcomes indie and traditionally published writers and includes critique groups. Omaha Public Library hosts an adult writing club, and the Nebraska Celebration of Books each November in Lincoln brings readers and authors together.

Yes, mainly through prizes and journals. The Prairie Schooner Book Prize, open January 15 to March 15, awards $3,000 and publication by the University of Nebraska Press for poetry or short-story collections, though not novels. Prairie Schooner also reads unsolicited poems, stories and essays in two short windows each September and February.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Nebraska authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas. Sample reviews, quotes, proofs and approvals all happen online, so an author in Kearney or Norfolk gets the same process as one in Omaha.

It can. Omaha Public Library counts any current or former Nebraska resident as a local author, prefers to buy local authors' books, and accepts submissions through an online form. Libraries and bookstores generally order through distributors, so we set up expanded distribution for your print edition and an ISBN in your own name.

Publishing packages start at $299. The final price follows the work: how deep an edit, what kind of cover, print and ebook formatting, and any audiobook or marketing.
