Illinois Book Publishing Services for Authors With a Real Argument

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, offers book publishing services in Illinois for authors in Chicago, Aurora and Naperville. We handle self-publishing in about 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We work with Illinois authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Illinois turns out books with something at stake: a reporter's investigation, a researcher's case, a business argument built in a Chicago boardroom. The state counts nearly 30 Fortune 500 companies and more than 247 higher education institutions, and 39.2% of adults hold a bachelor's degree or higher. Executives, academics, journalists and immigrant families recording how they arrived are the authors this page speaks to.

Illinois Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

  • Illinois Center for the Book. Based at the Illinois State Library in Springfield, it keeps the Illinois Authors directory and works with Illinois Reads on Family Reading Night (check the Illinois Reads site for the date).
  • Chicago Writers Association. Founded in 2003, it runs the Let's Just Write! conference at Steppenwolf Theatre (next: June 12, 2027) and Book of the Year Awards open to both independently and traditionally published authors.
  • SCBWI Illinois. Children's book writers and illustrators meet in free Network groups, in person and online.
  • Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author Project. A library-run contest for self-published Illinois authors that has run for more than 12 years and is now led by Chicago Public Library and its 80 branches.
  • Printers Row Lit Fest and Chicago Humanities. Printers Row fills South Dearborn Street with free events every September; 2026 was its 41st year. Chicago Humanities runs a fall season of talks from September to November and a spring festival.
  • Women & Children First and The Book Stall. The Andersonville store at 5233 N. Clark St. hosts book launches, and The Book Stall in Winnetka runs author events in store, off site and online.

A note on grants: the Illinois Arts Council Creative Projects Grant is open to individual artists 21 and older who have lived in Illinois for at least a year. Its FY27 funds ran out on August 7, 2026. The council says its next opening for individuals is the Creative Accelerator Fund; check its site for dates.

Where we fit in: Chicago's workshops and festivals sharpen the argument and gather readers. We make the finished book as rigorous as its content, from structural edit to cover to publishing setup.

Selling Your Book in Illinois: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Online stores. Illinois has treated marketplace facilitators as the retailer since January 1, 2020. Since January 1, 2026, the only test is $100,000 or more in gross receipts from Illinois sales over the prior 12 months; the old 200-transaction test no longer applies.

Fairs, festivals and pop-ups. The Illinois Department of Revenue says anyone selling at these events is a retailer, "whether your sales are for a full-time business or as a hobby." If the Department's Special Events Coordinator registered the event, you report on Form IDOR-6-SETR, usually handed out by the organizer. Otherwise you register with Form REG-1 and file Form ST-1.

The rate. General merchandise is taxed at 6.25% statewide, and home rule, non-home rule, mass transit and other local taxes can push the total higher.

The federal part. No Illinois agency issues ISBNs or copyrights: ISBNs come from Bowker, registration from the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number is optional. We register your ISBN under your own name or imprint.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Illinois Department of Revenue or an accountant.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Illinois

The list of book publishers in Illinois includes some of the country's most respected presses, so it helps to know which model you are approaching. Traditional and university presses fund publication and keep the rights; hybrids charge authors part of the cost; self-publishing services such as Kinetic Digital Publishers charge for the work and leave you as publisher.

The University of Chicago Press takes nonfiction proposals sent directly to an acquiring editor, but publishes no original fiction. Northwestern University Press in Evanston is not accepting unsolicited poetry, literary nonfiction such as memoir, or plays. Agate Publishing considers business, food and Midwestern nonfiction and, through Medill Books, reported nonfiction from journalists.

Before you commit, confirm that the ISBN and store accounts will be yours, that royalties are paid to you, and that the price is in writing. With us, the ISBN and store accounts are in your name and royalties go to you.

An Argument Only Lands If the Reader Stays With It

Most nonfiction manuscripts lose readers in the same places: a slow opening, a middle that repeats itself and a conclusion that arrives without being earned. Those are structural problems, not sentence problems, so we fix them first, then line edit, then proofread.

Research-heavy books need consistency as well. We agree the citation style up front and typeset notes properly in print and ebook. Illinois authors have a home-state advantage here: The Chicago Manual of Style, published by the University of Chicago Press since 1906 and now in its 18th edition, is the reference many editors work from.

A series of articles is not yet a book. For journalists, we map the through-line with you before any editing starts.

Illinois's Literary Heritage

Ernest Hemingway was born in a second-floor bedroom in Oak Park on July 21, 1899, and his birthplace is now a museum. Illinois also has a state Poet Laureate, a post once held by Carl Sandburg and Gwendolyn Brooks. Chicago is home to the American Writers Museum.
