Michigan Book Publishing Services for Authors Who Have Been Through Something

Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company working since 2014, provides book publishing services in Michigan for authors in Detroit, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, covering editing, design, children's books and self-publishing. A standard manuscript is usually published in 4-8 weeks, packages start at $299, and you keep 100% of your rights and royalties. We meet by phone and video, and our head office in Dallas, Texas, welcomes visitors.

Michigan books often carry hard-won experience: a plant that closed, a business rebuilt, a city that emptied and came back. Alongside those memoirs, Michigan has Christian writers in Grand Rapids, home of the religious publisher Eerdmans, regional historians of Detroit and the Great Lakes, and children's authors.

Michigan Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Places across the state where Michigan writers learn the craft, meet each other and get read:

  • Michigan Center for the Book. A program of the Library of Michigan and the state's Library of Congress affiliate. Each year the Library also names 20 Michigan Notable Books, written by Michigan authors or about Michigan and the Great Lakes, and many of those authors tour the state.
  • Detroit Working Writers. A writers' organization founded in June 1900, with members across fiction, nonfiction, poetry and children's books.
  • Ann Arbor District Library. Runs an Emerging Writers Workshop and write-in nights at its Westgate Branch, open to beginners, and its own imprint, Fifth Avenue Press, has published Washtenaw County authors since 2017.
  • National Writers Series , Traverse City. Has brought more than 300 authors to Traverse City for live conversations since 2010, a good place to watch how established writers talk about their books.
  • Festival of Faith & Writing , Grand Rapids. A three-day festival at Calvin University, next held April 6-8, 2028.
  • Schuler Books. An independent bookseller with stores in Grand Rapids, Okemos, Ann Arbor and West Bloomfield and a regular author events program.
  • Michigan Arts and Culture Council. Its published FY2026 funding plan lists grants to organizations, not individual writers, so local nonprofits and libraries are the usual route to that money.

Where we fit in: these groups and festivals keep you writing and connect you with readers. Once the manuscript is finished, our team takes it through editing, design and publishing.

Selling Your Book in Michigan: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Online stores. Michigan's Department of Treasury says marketplace facilitators with economic nexus have collected and remitted tax on sales through their platforms since January 1, 2020. Nexus means more than $100,000 in sales, or more than 200 transactions, to Michigan buyers in the previous calendar year, so the big online bookstores collect the tax on your orders.

Signings and craft fairs. Treasury says individuals or businesses selling goods to the final consumer must remit the sales tax, and that sellers register with Treasury to receive a sales tax license, which runs from January 1 through December 31. If you plan to sell copies in person, sort out registration before your first event of the year.

The rate. The rate is 6%, and Treasury states that Michigan does not allow cities or other local units to impose a sales tax, so the rate is the same in Detroit and Marquette.

Paperwork Washington handles. Bowker is the U.S. source for ISBNs (isbn.org); the U.S. Copyright Office registers copyright; and you may skip a Library of Congress control number altogether.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice. Confirm your situation with the Michigan Department of Treasury or an accountant.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Michigan

Search for book publishers in Michigan and you will find three models side by side: traditional presses that buy and own the publishing rights, hybrid publishers that charge you part of the cost, and self-publishing services such as Kinetic Digital Publishers that charge for the work while you keep control.

Two Michigan houses take proposals directly. Wayne State University Press in Detroit lists fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction by Michigan authors among its interests, along with regional books about Detroit, Michigan and the Great Lakes. Eerdmans in Grand Rapids, an independent religious publisher, accepts proposals by email only and does not do subsidy publishing for individuals.

Whichever route you take, confirm who will own the ISBN and store accounts, who will receive royalties, and that you have an itemized written quote. With us, the first two are you.

The Hard Part Comes After the Last Page Is Written

Finishing a draft feels like the finish line. In practice it is where the specialist work starts: editing, cover design, formatting to each platform's specifications, categories, pricing and positioning.

We take all of it on. One team and one project manager move the book through a fixed order of stages, so nothing is done twice and nothing is forgotten. You see each stage before the next one begins.

A Michigan story also travels further than many authors expect. A book about one city's auto plant or one family's turnaround can be positioned for the national shelf it belongs on as well as the regional one, from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan's Literary Heritage

Ernest Hemingway spent his first 21 summers in northern Michigan, and the Michigan Hemingway Society traces his Nick Adams stories to those boyhood landscapes around Walloon Lake, Horton Bay and Petoskey. The Library of Michigan keeps that tradition current by naming its Notable Books every year, honoring each list at an annual Night for Notables and sending many of the authors on a statewide tour.
