Kinetic Digital Publishers · Utah
Utah Book Publishing Services for Family Records and Founder Stories Alike
Looking for book publishing services in Utah? Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company working with authors since 2014, takes writers in Salt Lake City, Provo and St. George through editing, design and self-publishing. A typical book is done in 4–8 weeks, with packages from $299 and 100% of your rights and royalties kept by you. Calls and video meetings run from our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Utah rewards very different books. The University of Utah Press acquires Western history, Mormon studies and creative nonfiction. The 2026 Utah Book Awards finalists run from picture books to a frank book about faith and church life. The state's writing competition takes fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Family histories and business books sit right alongside them.

Utah Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Utah's writing support is unusually organized: a statewide league, a statewide festival and a free state competition.
- Utah Center for the Book. Based at Utah Humanities in Salt Lake City, the state's Library of Congress affiliate promotes books, reading, authorship and libraries, and runs the statewide book festival and the Utah Book Awards.
- League of Utah Writers. Utah's oldest and largest nonprofit writing organization, active since 1935, runs local and online chapters whose meetings are free. Membership is $45 a year, and its four annual contests give judges' feedback on every entry.
- Utah Humanities Book Festival. Every October, with free events across the state. Libraries are core partners: the 2026 program included events at Weber County Library, Park City Library and Brigham City Library.
- Utah Book Awards. Run with the League of Utah Writers, the awards give each winner a $500 honorarium. Check the League's site for when submissions open.
- The King's English Bookshop. "Matching books to readers since 1977," it lists author signings on its events page. The League's Utah Authors Day also brings local authors into libraries and independent Utah bookstores.
A state competition: the Utah Division of Arts & Museums runs the Original Writing Competition, open to all Utah residents 18 and over with no entry fee. Manuscripts are judged blind by judges from outside Utah, and entries generally must be unpublished.
Where we fit in: if you plan to enter that competition, enter first. We can edit the manuscript before you submit, then handle design and publishing once the results are in.
Selling Your Book in Utah: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
What Utah charges. The Utah State Tax Commission combined rate chart lists a 4.70% state sales and use tax plus a 0.15% state Medicaid expansion rate, with local and transit taxes on top. In Salt Lake City the total is 8.45%.
Book fairs and signings. Publication 25 defines a special event as a one-time event, or one running six months or less, where taxable sales happen. Every seller there must register for a temporary sales tax license, even one who already holds a regular license, and the sale is taxed at the event's location.
Online stores. Under Publication 71, a marketplace facilitator with more than $100,000 of Utah sales in the current or previous year is treated as the seller, so the store collects on those orders. Remote sellers have faced the same $100,000 test since January 1, 2019.
Federal, not state. Bowker issues US ISBNs (isbn.org), the U.S. Copyright Office registers copyright, and a Library of Congress Control Number through the Preassigned Control Number program is optional.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Utah
Book publishers in Utah range from university presses to self-publishing services. A traditional press covers the cost and pays you, but accepts few books. A hybrid asks you to fund part of it. A self-publishing service bills for the work while the book stays yours.
Two Utah publishers read proposals directly. The University of Utah Press in Salt Lake City takes emailed proposals in Western history, Indigenous and Mormon studies and creative nonfiction, takes poetry only through its Agha Shahid Ali Prize, and estimates about two years from proposal to book. Gibbs Smith, a Layton publisher founded in 1969, takes email submissions in design, children's books, cookbooks, crafts and humor, and replies only if interested.
Ask any publisher three questions: Who will hold the ISBN and the retailer accounts? Who receives the royalty payments? Will the full cost be in writing before you pay? With us, you hold both and the royalties come to you.
Two Kinds of Book, One Standard of Production
A genealogy with hundreds of names and a startup book built on one argument need completely different structures, but the same care in typesetting, cover design and file preparation.
For family histories, pedigree charts, photographs and an index are typeset properly, including in the ebook edition, where tables and charts usually need different handling than in print. For a faith or Church history book, we handle structure, editing and production, while doctrinal and sourcing decisions stay with you.
For a founder's book, we build the chapter framework from your material and interviews, then edit or ghostwrite to it, and you approve every chapter. The cover is designed to compete in a crowded business category.
From Salt Lake City to Provo to St. George, both kinds reach Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution.

Utah's Literary Heritage
The state's Original Writing Competition has recognized Utah writers of fiction, nonfiction and poetry since 1958. The statewide book festival began in 1998 as the Great Salt Lake Book Festival, a one-day event with 30 authors at Westminster College, and it now spans several weeks, serves upwards of 12,000 Utahns each fall and keeps its events free of charge.

Gibbs Smith in Layton accepts emailed proposals for children's books, cookbooks, design, crafts and humor. Both are selective, so self-publishing is the faster route for most other books.
