Providence has been home to the Rhode Island School of Design since 1877, and plenty of Rhode Island books are made by people who care how the finished object looks. Rhode Island Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Rhode Island is small enough that one good connection leads to the next. Start with these.
- Rhode Island Center for the Book. The state's Library of Congress affiliate since 2003, it runs Reading Across Rhode Island, a one-book, one-state read chosen each October with a January kickoff, and names the state's Great Reads for the Library of Congress National Book Festival. The 2026 picks are Riss Neilson's A Love Like the Sun and Kelly Murphy's Together We Build .
- Association of Rhode Island Authors. Membership is open to local authors whether they are traditionally, self- or indie-published, and members meet monthly, with meetings broadcast on Zoom. Dues are $45 by check or $48 through PayPal.
- Rhode Island Author Expo , Warwick. The association's 13th annual expo took place at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick on August 15, 2026, with free admission and parking. It is the state's summer showcase for local authors.
- Providence Athenaeum. A membership library on Benefit Street with reading groups and author talks. Past speakers include Ann Patchett and Colson Whitehead, and Nathaniel Philbrick visits this fall.
- Ink Fish Books , Warren. This independent shop at 488 Main Street hosts local, regional and touring authors every month. Authors can ask about stocking a book through its Book Inventory & Author Event Request page.
Grants: the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts funds individual artists. Its Make Art Grants support new or continuing work in any discipline, with applications opening February 1 and closing April 1.
Where we fit in: an expo table or a bookstore shelf needs a book finished to a professional standard. That part is ours: edit, cover, interior, ISBN and store listings.
Selling Your Book in Rhode Island: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
One statewide rate. Rhode Island's sales tax is 7% of gross receipts from taxable sales. The Division of Taxation's page lists no local sales tax on goods; its 1% local tax applies to meals and drinks at eating and drinking places.
Expos, signings and craft shows. Anyone making retail sales in the state needs a sales tax permit, and the Division says sellers based elsewhere who come in for an event such as a craft show must apply for one too. Permits run to June 30 each year, and renewals are due by February 1.
Online stores. Since July 1, 2019, remote sellers, marketplace facilitators and referrers without a physical presence must collect the 7% tax once they reach $100,000 in Rhode Island sales or 200 separate transactions in a calendar year. The Rhode Island Division of Taxation sales and use tax page has the details.
The federal pieces. ISBNs (from Bowker in the U.S.), copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office and the optional Library of Congress Control Number work the same here as in any other state.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Rhode Island
Before signing with anyone, know which model you are looking at. Traditional publishers take on the cost and keep most of the income, hybrid publishers charge fees and share royalties, and self-publishing services such as ours bill for the work while you own the result.
Inside the state, the clearest route is for history writers: Rhode Island History, the Rhode Island Historical Society's peer-reviewed journal, comes out twice a year and posts guidelines for authors. For a novel, memoir or picture book, the usual paths are a literary agent, a national press or publishing independently.
Three questions sort good offers from bad ones: whose ISBN is it, do royalties land in your own account, and is every cost written into the quote? Ask us all three on a free call.
The Book as an Object, Not Just a File
Trim size, paper, typeface, margins, the way a chapter opening sits on the page: these choices decide whether a book feels considered, and in many self-published books they are left on the default setting.
We make them on purpose and show you the result before anything is final: a sample interior spread, cover options with the reasoning behind each, and a proof you can hold.
Designers who bring their own cover get a technical check against print specs, with problems flagged before upload. Maritime and local histories keep their archival photographs, maps and documents legible instead of shrunk to fit the page.

Rhode Island's Literary Heritage
The Providence Athenaeum traces its roots to the Providence Library Company of 1753 and opened its Benefit Street building in 1838. In 1848 Edgar Allan Poe courted the Providence poet Sarah Helen Whitman there; on December 23 that year, in an Athenaeum alcove, she was handed the note that ended their engagement. Their portraits now hang side by side in the library's Art Room.
