Vermont Book Publishing Services for Books Made Properly
Book publishing services in Vermont from Kinetic Digital Publishers cover editing, cover design, formatting and self-publishing setup for authors in Burlington, Rutland and Brattleboro. We have been a book publishing company since 2014. A standard book takes 4–8 weeks, packages start at $299, and 100% of your rights and royalties stay yours. Most work happens by phone and video, and our head office in Dallas, Texas, welcomes in-person visits.
Many Vermont books grow out of work people actually do. Think of growers and homesteaders with hard-won methods, poets who already read at their town library, and local historians who know the story behind every house on the green.

Vermont Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
Vermont's writing life runs through libraries, small bookstores and one very old league. These are worth knowing before you publish.
- Vermont Humanities. The statewide affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. Its Vermont Reads program asks the whole state to read one book together; the 2026 choice is Charity and Sylvia , Tillie Walden's graphic novel.
- League of Vermont Writers. Founded in 1929, it calls itself the oldest writing organization in Vermont. Expect workshops in person and on Zoom, a free virtual book group in even-numbered months, and a spring annual meeting with guest speakers.
- Kellogg-Hubbard Library , Montpelier. Every Saturday morning, Write Now! gives writers an hour of focused writing in company at 135 Main Street. The library also stages PoemCity for National Poetry Month.
- Brattleboro Literary Festival. Founded in 2002, this free fall-foliage weekend has presented more than 900 authors. It is held each October in downtown Brattleboro.
- Phoenix Books. With shops on Church Street in Burlington, in Essex Junction and in Rutland, Phoenix hosts launches and readings, and its calendar regularly features Vermont authors.
Grants: the Vermont Arts Council funds individual artists directly. Its Artist Development Grants and Creation Grants for new work open on their own schedules, so read the guidelines to see whether your writing project fits.
Where we fit in: once a workshop has done its job and the manuscript is ready to become a book, we take over the edit, the cover, the interior and the upload.
Selling Your Book in Vermont: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
The rate. Vermont charges a 6% sales tax on taxable goods. Towns that have voted a local option tax add 1%, for 7% in total, and the tax follows the place where the buyer takes the book.
Selling at a fair or reading. The Vermont Department of Taxes says a vendor needs a business tax account and a sales tax license before making taxable sales, even for a single event. Both are free, and you should register at least one day ahead. Organizers of events with 25 or more vendors send the Department a vendor list beforehand.
Online orders. Since June 1, 2019, marketplace facilitators have collected and remitted Vermont sales tax on sales made through their sites, and they must tell sellers they are doing so. Out-of-state sellers register once they reach $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions in twelve months. The Vermont Department of Taxes sales and use tax page has the details.
Still federal. ISBNs are issued in the U.S. by Bowker, copyright is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, and a Library of Congress Control Number stays optional wherever you live.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Vermont
Book publishers in Vermont come in three kinds: traditional presses that pay you and own the edition, hybrid outfits that charge you and share royalties, and service companies like ours that charge for the work and leave ownership with you.
Two Vermont houses show what a traditional deal looks like. Chelsea Green Publishing in White River Junction takes emailed queries on farming, gardening, homesteading and sustainable living, but no novels, poetry or children's books, and it never charges a fee. Tuttle Publishing, founded in Rutland in 1832 and now in North Clarendon, publishes books on Asia and posts submission guidelines.
A fair test for anyone else: ask who registers the ISBN, who receives the royalties, and whether every service is priced in writing before you pay. If a press can't take your book, we can.
Straightforward Work, Plainly Priced
A manuscript should get the work it needs and no more. Not every book needs a developmental edit, and the free consultation is the place to find out which kind of edit yours does need.
The stages also run in an order that avoids paying twice: editing, then design, then typesetting, then publishing setup.
Practical books get extra care. A cookbook, garden guide or building manual needs consistent formatting for ingredients, steps, measurements and diagrams, and a layout that reads as well on a Kindle as it does propped open on a workbench. For farmers' markets and fairs, print-on-demand editions let you order copies as you need them.

2 Editing. The edit your book actually needs: developmental, line or copyedit, then a final proofread.
3 Design and formatting. A cover built for your genre and an interior laid out for print and ebook.
4 Publishing and launch. ISBN set up in your name or imprint, then listings on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and Google Play Books, with optional marketing.
Most books that need standard editing, formatting and a cover are ready in 4–8 weeks. Illustrated and children's books take longer. Publishing packages start at $299. Compare publishing packages and prices.
Vermont's Literary Heritage
Robert Frost wrote "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" at the Stone House in Shaftsbury, built in 1769 and now the Robert Frost Stone House Museum at Bennington College. In Dummerston, Rudyard Kipling wrote The Jungle Book and Captains Courageous at Naulakha, the house built for him in 1892 and now a National Historic Landmark.

A couple, in narrow subjects. Chelsea Green Publishing considers emailed queries on farming, food growing, homesteading and sustainability, but not novels, poetry or children's books. Tuttle Publishing in North Clarendon has submission guidelines for books on Asia. Most other manuscripts go through an agent or self-publishing.
No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Vermont authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Possibly. The Vermont Arts Council runs two grant programs for individual artists: Artist Development Grants and Creation Grants for new work, each opening on its own schedule. Read the current guidelines to confirm that a writing project qualifies before you apply.
