Pennsylvania Book Publishing Services for Books With History Behind Them
Kinetic Digital Publishers, a book publishing company since 2014, provides book publishing services in Pennsylvania to self-publishing authors in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Allentown. A book that needs standard editing, formatting and a cover is usually ready in 4–8 weeks. Packages start at $299, you keep 100% of your rights and royalties, and we meet by phone, video or in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.
Many Pennsylvania manuscripts start as a box of documents: a congregation's records, a township's story, a family line traced back several generations. We also work with genre novelists, including romance writers, the group Pennsylvania's largest writers' organization grew out of.

Pennsylvania Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing
From Erie to Doylestown, Pennsylvania writers have solid places to learn, meet readers and test a manuscript.
- Pennwriters. A nonprofit that grew out of a 1986 romance writers' group in Johnstown and now has more than 400 members in every genre. It runs regional Areas by county and an annual three-day conference; the 40th is set for May 21–23, 2027 in Pittsburgh.
- Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures. Best known for its Ten Evenings author series, it also runs Made Local, a series that presents Pittsburgh-area authors.
- Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Hosts author talks at CLP–Main in Oakland and is a good place to watch for local book events.
- Bucks County Book Festival , Doylestown. A spring festival of authors and readers; the next edition is listed for May 21–22, 2027.
- Midtown Scholar Bookstore , Harrisburg. An independent bookstore and café at 1302 North Third Street that hosts a full calendar of author events, including a yearly Fall Authors' Week.
Grants: through the Creative Entrepreneur Accelerator, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts funds individuals who run a for-profit creative micro-business, and publishing businesses, content creators, editors and writers are on the list. Its Growth Grant offers up to $4,000 to creative businesses earning $10,000–20,000 a year, and it is run by Bridgeway Capital.
Where we fit in: Pennwriters can sharpen your draft and a festival can find your first readers. We take the finished manuscript through editing, design and publishing so it is ready for that table.
Selling Your Book in Pennsylvania: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores
Books are taxable here. Pennsylvania's Retailer's Information Guide (REV-717) says tax applies to books whether they are delivered in print, electronically or digitally, so e-books count too.
Selling in person. Every person making taxable sales needs a Sales, Use and Hotel Occupancy Tax License, and you apply through myPATH before your first sale. The organizer of a show needs a separate Promoter License, registered at least 30 days before the first show, so ask organizers what they expect from vendors.
Rates. The state rate is 6%. By law, Allegheny County adds 1% and Philadelphia adds 2%. Details are on the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue sales tax page.
Online sales. Since July 1, 2019, sellers without a physical presence must register once their Pennsylvania sales pass $100,000 in the prior year. Marketplace sellers count only direct sales and sales through a marketplace that doesn't collect the tax for them.
The federal pieces. ISBNs (from Bowker), copyright registration and the optional Library of Congress Control Number work the same in Harrisburg as anywhere in the country.
This is general information, not tax or legal advice.
How to Choose a Book Publisher in Pennsylvania
There are three models. Traditional and university presses buy rights and pay royalties. Hybrid publishers charge fees and share royalties. Self-publishing services like ours charge for production, and the book stays yours.
For regional nonfiction, two university presses stand out. Penn State University Press publishes Keystone Books, accessible, well-researched books on the state's history, culture, society and environment, and takes submissions through its editor-in-chief. The University of Pittsburgh Press publishes regional books and runs prizes such as the Drue Heinz Literature Prize and the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize.
Whoever you hire, ask three questions: whose name is on the ISBN and store accounts, who receives the royalties, and can you see a written quote first.
From Boxes of Material to a Book People Read
Most of the Pennsylvania history projects we see begin with too much: decades of minutes, scanned photographs, interviews, drafts written by three different relatives. The first job, before any editing, is deciding what the book is actually about.
We sort it structurally, separating what belongs in the narrative, what belongs in an appendix and what can be left in the archive. Then comes the edit, then design, then typesetting that places images, captions and documents so they stay readable on the page.
When it's done, the book goes out through Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble, Kobo and expanded distribution, so a historical society or library from Scranton to Lancaster can order a copy.

Pennsylvania's Literary Heritage
Pearl S. Buck won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize. Her stone farmhouse at 520 Dublin Road in Perkasie is now the Pearl S. Buck House, a National Historic Landmark on a 67-acre estate that is open to visitors. Buck used her fame to speak for marginalized people and for the civil rights movement, and the organization she founded still provides humanitarian aid in several countries.
