Washington Writing Groups, Libraries and Book Events Worth Knowing

Seattle gets the attention, but help for writers runs from the Sound to the Palouse.

  • Washington Center for the Book. Part of the Washington State Library in Tumwater and the state's Library of Congress affiliate. It runs the Washington State Book Awards.
  • Hugo House , Seattle. Creative writing classes and workshops for every level, with scholarships you can apply for on each class page.
  • King County Library System. Its events calendar lists writing groups, including a peer-led Community Writing Group that meets monthly at the Redmond library, open to every genre and skill level.
  • Sno-Isle Libraries. Third Thursday Online Writers is a monthly online group for sharing projects and craft tips, and the Mill Creek library also hosts an in-person group for beginning and amateur writers.
  • Get Lit! Festival , Spokane. Washington's longest-running annual literary festival, run by Eastern Washington University, now 28 years old. The 2027 festival is set for April 16–18.
  • Third Place Books. Founded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park, with Seattle stores in Ravenna and Seward Park. The Lake Forest Park store hosts more than a thousand free public events a year.

Grants: ArtsWA, the state arts commission, makes its grants to organizations. For individual writers, the nonprofit Artist Trust has awarded more than $15 million to Washington artists of every discipline since 1986.

Where we fit in: a class or writing group shapes the manuscript. We take it from there: editing, cover, interior and a publishing setup you can check line by line.

Selling Your Book in Washington: Sales Tax, Events and Online Stores

Do you need a license? The Washington Department of Revenue says to register and get a business license if you sell a product that requires collecting sales tax, or if your gross income is $12,000 a year or more. Apply well before your first festival table: online applications take about 10 business days, and city endorsements can add 2–3 weeks. Start at the Department's business license page.

The rate. Sales tax has two parts: the state rate of 6.5% and a local rate that varies by city and county. You collect based on where the customer receives the book.

Online stores. Marketplace facilitators with more than $100,000 in Washington receipts must register with the Department, and since January 1, 2020, remote marketplace sellers over the same threshold must register to report business and occupation (B&O) tax and collect sales tax.

What stays federal. Washington has no say over your ISBN (Bowker), your copyright registration (the U.S. Copyright Office) or the optional Library of Congress Control Number.

This is general information, not tax or legal advice.

How to Choose a Book Publisher in Washington

Three business models compete for your manuscript. Traditional and university presses pay royalties and make the publishing calls. A hybrid house bills you for a share of production. Self-publishing services such as ours are paid a fee, and the book, the accounts and the royalties stay yours.

Washington's two university presses publish the region well. The University of Washington Press in Seattle covers areas such as Pacific Northwest history and Native American and Indigenous studies, and publishes nonfiction about the region. Washington State University Press welcomes proposals from new and established writers on the American West, but is not taking novels or poetry right now.

Read any agreement for three things: the ISBN registered to you, royalties paid straight to you, and a written price.

Nothing About This Needs to Be Opaque

The Amazon KDP account is yours. The ISBN can be registered to you or your own imprint. Royalties come to you directly from the stores, and we are paid for the work, never out of your earnings.

The production side is just as easy to check. You see the tracked-change edit, a sample interior spread, cover options with the reasoning behind them, and a final proof before anything goes live. At the end you keep the print-ready PDF interior and cover and the ebook files.

That suits technical writers turning documentation or a blog into a book, where the hard part is structure: posts are not chapters, so we map the through-line before editing starts. From Seattle to Spokane to the Olympic Peninsula, the finished book goes live on Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble and Kobo.

Yes, for nonfiction. Washington State University Press welcomes proposals on the American West from new and established writers but isn't taking novels or poetry. The University of Washington Press takes proposals in its subject areas, including Pacific Northwest history. Fiction writers usually need an agent or self-publish.

No. Our head office is in Dallas, Texas. We work with Washington authors by phone and video call, and you are welcome to meet us in person at our head office in Dallas, Texas.

Not from the state arts commission directly: ArtsWA funds organizations. Individual writers should look at Artist Trust, a nonprofit that has given more than $15 million in grants and other support to Washington artists of all disciplines since 1986.
