Audible New Royalty Model: What ACX Authors Must Do (2026)

Audible new royalty model: new ACX rates of 50% exclusive and 30% non-exclusive, legacy model ends with 2026 - Kinetic Digital Publishers

Audible’s new royalty model is how ACX now pays audiobook royalties: each member’s monthly Member Value is split among the titles they engaged with, weighted by a la carte price, and you earn 50% of your share (exclusive) or 30% (non-exclusive). ACX says the legacy 40%/25% model ends by year-end 2026; titles must be enrolled to keep selling on Audible. That is the change in one paragraph. This guide from Kinetic Digital Publishers explains what the new model means for your rates, your narrator and your distribution choice, and gives you a checklist to finish before December 31, 2026.

DIY titles claimed after May 26, 2026, and producer offers sent after that date, are on the new model automatically. Anything set up before then stays on legacy terms until you enroll it. Every fact below comes from ACX’s own Help Center and blog unless we say otherwise.

What Is Audible’s New Royalty Model?

Short answer: It is a membership-based royalty system. Audible pools what each member pays in a month, divides it among the titles that member engaged with, and applies your royalty rate to your share. Rates rise to 50% (exclusive) and 30% (non-exclusive), and titles can earn from Audible’s all-you-can-listen (AYCL) catalog for the first time.

In the words of ACX’s Help Center article, “a listener’s membership revenue is distributed among all titles they engage with.” The ACX announcement of April 28, 2026 lists the extras for enrolled titles:

  • AYCL opt-in , to be considered for the all-you-can-listen catalog.
  • Suggested pricing , though “Audible determines your title’s price and reserves the right to adjust it at any time based on multiple factors.”
  • More detailed earnings statements , which the help article says include Member Value per unit.

What Changes at the End of 2026?

Short answer: The legacy model ends. ACX says that “by end of year, Audible’s legacy royalty model will be discontinued. To continue distributing with Audible, you will need to enroll your titles in the new model.” Your only alternative is to discontinue distribution.

ACX’s own pages say “end of year” rather than naming a day. Author Media gives the date as December 31, 2026, and the Alliance of Independent Authors also reported the year-end cutoff. Treat December 31 as the hard stop.

One timing detail matters: “existing titles you choose to enroll in the new model will take effect on the 1st of the following month.” Enroll in November and the new terms start December 1. ACX has not said whether a title enrolled in late December, switching on January 1, 2027, counts as on time.

Enrolling also moves you onto new contracts. ACX’s distribution help page notes that enrolled titles “will be subject to the ACX Book Posting Agreement and Audiobook License and Distribution Agreement last revised on May 26, 2026.” Read both before you click Confirm.

How Does Member Value Work?

Short answer: Member Value is the monthly price of a listener’s plan, minus discounts, taxes and fees, plus the value of any extra credit they used. That total is divided among the titles the member engaged with in proportion to each title’s a la carte price, and your share is multiplied by your royalty rate.

ACX’s help article says the plan can be “Premium, Plus, Standard or monthly AYCL,” and the total “is then divided up and divided proportionally among each title the member engaged with, based on the a la carte price of those titles.”

A simplified illustration, using made-up numbers rather than Audible’s real prices: a member’s plan produces $10 of Member Value this month. They engage with your $20 audiobook and another priced at $30. Your share is 20/50 of $10, or $4. At 50% exclusive, your royalty is $2; at 30% non-exclusive, $1.20.

So what you earn per member now depends on what else that member listens to. Cash purchases are different: “our model for non-member and member cash purchases will not change,” so those sales simply earn the higher rate.

What Are the New ACX Royalty Rates for Exclusive and Non-Exclusive Titles?

Short answer: Exclusive titles earn 50% under the new model and are sold only through Audible, Amazon and Apple Books. Non-exclusive titles earn 30% and can also be sold anywhere else. Enrolling does not change which one you chose.

ACX is explicit: “your title’s distribution status (i.e., exclusive or non-exclusive) will remain unchanged when you enroll in the new royalty model.” The new rates also apply beyond membership: “The new royalty rates apply to all royalties generated through ACX—both Audible’s membership offerings and a la carte royalties.”

Royalty Share, Royalty Share Plus and Pay-for-Production: What Changes?

Short answer: The split stays 50/50, but each side’s share rises from 20% to 25% under the new model. Pay-for-Production authors keep the whole 50% or 30%. Royalty Share and Royalty Share Plus still require exclusive distribution, and every new offer sent to a producer after May 26, 2026 is automatically on the new model.

From ACX’s How royalties work page: in a Royalty Share deal, the producer’s “equal share” works out to “20% (legacy royalty rate) or 25% (new royalty rate) royalties for the producer and 20% (legacy royalty rate) or 25% (new royalty rate) for you.”

Source: ACX Help Center, How royalties work. Royalty Share Plus deals qualify for AFTRA Health and Retirement contributions “if the offered rate is at least $100 per-finished-hour.”

What If Your Narrator Is on a Royalty Share Deal?

Short answer: Your narrator keeps earning half of the royalties after you enroll, now calculated on the new model. ACX says narrators “will be notified when their titles are enrolled,” so tell them first. If you do not enroll, the title stops being distributed, and so do their royalties.

ACX’s help article says “if your title is a royalty-share production, it will continue to earn its share of royalties.” It also tells narrators what to do if the author stalls: “Rights holders have until end of year for all titles to be enrolled, if you’re concerned about a specific title, please reach out to your rights holder.” Your narrator is relying on you to act.

Whether the narrator must approve is less clear. During the 2025 early access, ACX said royalty-share narrators “will receive a notification to approve the new royalty terms on ACX” (ACX blog), and Author Media’s May 2026 report says they “must approve the updated terms.” ACX’s current help article only says they will be notified. If a royalty-share title will not enroll, check your ACX message center and contact [email protected].

  • Message your narrator before you enroll. Explain the 25% split and the Member Value calculation, so their first statement is no surprise.
  • You cannot simply go wide. Royalty Share titles must stay exclusive, and in its January 2021 policy update ACX said these rights holders “must provide Producer consent” to terminate.
  • The term is seven years. “You’ll receive royalties for 7 years and you are not entitled to receive royalties beyond 7 years,” ACX tells producers.

How Do You Enroll Your Titles in the New Royalty Model?

These steps come from ACX’s help article. If you are new to audio, start with our guide to converting your book into an audiobook.

1. Open My Projects

Log in at www.acx.com and select the My Projects tab on your dashboard. A blue banner at the top offers enrollment.

2. Choose All Titles or a Few

  1. 1To enroll everything at once, select Enroll titles on the blue banner.
  2. 2To enroll some titles, select Clear selection , tick the titles you want, then select Enroll titles .
  3. 3To enroll one title, select Clear selection , then Enroll title next to its name.

3. Confirm and Keep the Message

Select Confirm . ACX sends a message center note “letting you know which titles have been enrolled in Audible’s new royalty model and the effective date for the new terms.” Keep it as your record.

4. Set Prices and AYCL Choices

Once enrolled, you can suggest a price and decide on AYCL. ACX’s AYCL page says opted-in titles are “considered for distribution in the AYCL catalog in the Premium membership plan,” and Audible curates which get in. To opt in, go to My projects , open the Programs tab, select Opt in titles next to Audible’s AYCL program, choose your titles, select Opt in title , then Confirm . Even without opting in, enrolled titles “may be distributed in territories where the only available Audible membership offering is an AYCL membership plan, such as Brazil, Spain, and Japan,” and can earn from Qualified Listens there.

What to Do Before December 31, 2026: Your ACX Checklist

Infographic: 6-step ACX checklist for moving titles to Audible’s new royalty model, with the 50% and 30% rates and the May 26, 2026 cut-off - Kinetic Digital Publishers

Work through this list title by title. The year-end deadline is ACX’s (the exact December 31 date comes from Author Media); the order and the November 30 target are our advice.

  1. 1List every title still on the legacy model from the My Projects banner.
  2. 2Save a baseline. Download recent earnings statements to compare later.
  3. 3Note each title’s deal type and distribution: DIY, Pay-for-Production, Royalty Share or Royalty Share Plus; exclusive or non-exclusive.
  4. 4Contact every royalty-share narrator before you enroll their titles.
  5. 5Read the revised agreements , both revised May 26, 2026.
  6. 6Decide on distribution now. Enrolling keeps your current choice; to change it, contact [email protected].
  7. 7Decide on AYCL per title. Titles “must remain in the AYCL catalog for at least 90 days before you can request to opt out.”
  8. 8Enroll by November 30, 2026 (our advice) , so the new terms take effect December 1. ACX has not said whether a December enrollment, which takes effect January 1, 2027, counts as on time.
  9. 9Check the confirmation message and your first new-model statement.
  10. 10If you leave instead, remember that ACX’s 2021 policy required producer consent to terminate a Royalty Share or Royalty Share Plus title; confirm with [email protected].

Should You Stay Exclusive, Go Non-Exclusive or Opt Into AYCL?

Short answer: For most ACX authors, the default is to enroll and keep your current distribution. Opt series starters and short works into AYCL, keep your strongest sellers in the credit catalog, and go non-exclusive only if you have real sales or library plans elsewhere.

Is ACX Royalty Share Worth It in 2026?

Short answer: It can be, if you cannot pay for production upfront. Royalty Share now gives you 25% instead of 20%, with no production bill. The trade-off is that you keep half of what Pay-for-Production would pay, you are locked into exclusive distribution, and the narrator shares in your royalties for the seven-year term.

Royalty Share Plus sits in between: a reduced per-finished-hour fee plus the same 25% split. If you expect steady sales, paying for production keeps the full rate. If you are testing whether a book works in audio at all, Royalty Share limits your risk.

What Are Authors Saying About the New Model?

Short answer: Opinion is split. ACX reports higher earnings for its early adopters. Critics, including a petition with more than 30,000 signatures, argue the pooled model dilutes credit value. No independent data settles it yet.

ACX’s August 2025 early access post says its earliest adopters, after four months in the program, were “seeing an average increase in earnings of around 45 percent compared to the old model,” while adding that “royalty earnings will vary by creator.” That figure is ACX’s own and has not been independently verified.

On the other side, a Change.org petition started by Robin Sullivan asks Audible to revise the model; it showed 30,688 signatures on October 3, 2026. Author Media summarizes its argument that the pooled calculation “dilutes credit value and shifts money from non-Plus titles to those in the Plus catalog.” Author Media also mentions author reports of lower royalties, but those are anecdotal, so we do not repeat them.

The practical answer is your own data: save your legacy statements, enroll, and compare month by month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions ACX authors are asking about Audible’s new royalty model.

What is Audible’s new royalty model?

It is ACX’s membership-based royalty system. Each member’s monthly Member Value is split among the titles they engaged with, weighted by a la carte price, and you earn 50% of your share for exclusive distribution or 30% for non-exclusive.

When does the legacy ACX royalty model end?

ACX says it will be discontinued “by end of year” 2026; Author Media reports the date as December 31, 2026. Because enrollment of an existing title takes effect on the 1st of the following month, our advice is to enroll by November 30.

Do I have to enroll my titles in the new royalty model?

Yes, if you want them to stay on Audible. ACX says, “To continue distributing with Audible, you will need to enroll your titles in the new model.” The alternative is to discontinue distribution.

Do audiobook narrators get royalties under the new model?

Royalty Share and Royalty Share Plus narrators do. They receive an equal share, 25% under the new model, for the seven-year term. Pay-for-Production narrators are paid a one-time fee and earn no royalties.

Does enrolling change my exclusive or non-exclusive distribution?

No. ACX says your distribution status “will remain unchanged when you enroll.” To ask about changing it, contact [email protected].

What is the Audible new royalty model petition?

A Change.org petition started by Robin Sullivan, asking Audible to revise the new model. It argues that pooling membership revenue dilutes credit value. It had more than 30,000 signatures (30,688 on October 3, 2026).

Can I take a title out of AYCL later?

Yes. You can opt out any time before Audible makes the title available in the AYCL catalog. Once it is live, ACX says titles “must remain in the AYCL catalog for at least 90 days before you can request to opt out,” and removal then takes 30 days, about 120 days in total from going live to full exit.
