Spotify Audiobook Creation Tools are a free feature inside Spotify for Authors that turns a finished EPUB manuscript into an audiobook narrated by an ElevenLabs digital voice and publishes it on Spotify, usually within 72 hours. As of September 2026 the tools, still labeled a beta by Spotify, are open to every self-published author in the United States with an English-language book and a validated payment profile, for up to five audiobooks per account, with no exclusivity required. That is the offer in one paragraph. The rest of this guide, from Kinetic Digital Publishers, explains who qualifies, what the limits are, how the money works and when a digital voice is the right call for your book.
For years the honest answer to “should I make an audiobook?” was “only if you can afford a narrator.” A professionally narrated audiobook costs hundreds to thousands of dollars in studio time, which is why most self-published books never get one. Spotify’s tool removes that cost for a large group of authors, and on September 9, 2026, Spotify opened what had been an invitation-only beta to every self-published author in the US. Spotify still labels the tools a beta.
Every fact below comes from Spotify’s own help pages and blog, or from named industry reports, and each one is linked so you can check it yourself. Spotify changes its terms without much notice, so treat the linked pages as the final word.
What Are Spotify Audiobook Creation Tools?
Short answer: They are a self-serve feature in the free Spotify for Authors dashboard. You upload an EPUB, pick a digital voice, fix any pronunciations, listen to chapter previews and press publish. Spotify generates the whole audiobook with ElevenLabs voice models and lists it on Spotify with a “Narrated by Digital Voice” label. There is no fee and no exclusive contract.
Spotify’s own description is direct: the tools “let you turn an EPUB manuscript into an audiobook narrated by a digital voice from ElevenLabs” (Spotify for Authors Help: Audiobook Creation Tools). Its product page adds that you can “pick from leading voice models from ElevenLabs, customize your pronunciations, and preview your audiobook all before it goes live” (Spotify for Authors: Audiobook Creation Tools).
The tool was announced at Spotify’s Investor Day on May 21, 2026, with an invitation-only beta scheduled to begin in June (TechCrunch). On September 9, 2026, Spotify’s authors blog announced that the beta had expanded to all self-published authors in the US, and on September 28 Publishers Lunch reported the expansion to all English-language books by self-published authors in the US.

Who Is Eligible for Spotify’s Free Audiobook Tool?
Spotify’s eligibility wording is short: the tools are “currently available to self-published authors in the United States. A validated payment profile is required for access,” and they “currently support English-language titles” (Spotify for Authors).
In practice that means four boxes to tick:
- 1You are self-published. The tool sits inside the self-published author account type in Spotify for Authors, not the publisher account type.
- 2Your payment profile is registered in the US. Spotify’s access page says you must “have a payment profile registered in the United States” and that “publisher accounts can’t access Audiobook Creation Tools” (Spotify Help: Getting access). Spotify has not published a timetable for other countries or languages; TechCrunch reported the launch as “initially” English-only, and as of October 2026 the tool is US and English only.
- 3You have completed Spotify’s payment set-up. A “validated payment profile” means you have finished the payout onboarding in your dashboard so Spotify can pay you royalties.
- 4You own the audio rights. If a publisher or a previous audiobook deal holds your audio rights, you cannot use the tool for that book.
If you are outside the US, or your book is not in English, Spotify’s FAQ points you to ElevenLabs Studio (fees apply) to create the narration yourself, then upload the finished audio through Spotify for Authors and tick the “This audiobook uses digital voice narration” option. Spotify accepts digitally narrated uploads from providers such as Google Play Books and ElevenLabs.
How to Make an Audiobook on Spotify, Step by Step
Spotify’s blog post promises you can “transform your finished manuscript into a published, natural-sounding audiobook within minutes” (Spotify for Authors blog). The minutes are real, but the quality of the result depends almost entirely on what you do at steps one and three.

1. Prepare a Clean EPUB
The tool accepts EPUB only. Spotify builds one chapter preview per chapter it finds in the EPUB, and like any text-to-speech tool it will read whatever text is in the file, including front-matter clutter that never belonged in an audiobook. Before you upload:
- Remove the table of contents page, copyright page boilerplate, “also by” lists and any text meant only for print.
- Check that every chapter starts with a proper heading, so the tool creates one audio chapter per book chapter.
- Spell out anything you do not want read literally, such as abbreviations and symbols.
- Read the first page aloud yourself. If it sounds odd spoken, the digital voice will make it sound odder.
If your EPUB was built by hand or exported from a word processor, this is the step to get help with. Our book formatting service produces a clean, chaptered EPUB that works for Kindle, Apple Books and Spotify’s tool alike.
2. Choose a Voice
You pick one voice for the whole book from Spotify’s selection of ElevenLabs models. Spotify does not publish a fixed count of voices, and the roster can change. Spotify plays each voice sample using text from your own book, so listen to several before choosing, because a voice that sounds warm on a marketing blurb can sound flat on dialogue.
3. Fix Pronunciations
This is the step that separates a listenable audiobook from an embarrassing one. When you upload the EPUB, Spotify “automatically detects terms that may need pronunciation review,” and for each term you can “listen to the current pronunciation, add a phonetic spelling if the pronunciation sounds incorrect, skip terms that don’t need pronunciation changes,” or add your own names, places and acronyms manually (Spotify Help: Reviewing pronunciation). Spotify’s own example is a phonetic respelling such as “Bee-YON-say” for a celebrity’s name.
Saved pronunciations apply to both the chapter previews and the final audiobook, and they stay with the project if you come back later. Do this before you publish: fixing a pronunciation afterwards means regenerating the book, and regenerations are limited.
4. Preview Chapters
Spotify creates chapter previews automatically during the Content step. Listen to at least the opening chapter, one heavy dialogue scene and any chapter full of names. If something is wrong, go back to pronunciations, save, and preview again; you can repeat this as often as you like before publishing.
5. Publish and Wait
Press Submit and Publish. Spotify says “most audiobooks are published within 72 hours.” Once it is live, you can still change the digital voice, update pronunciations and edit metadata such as title details, contributors and copyright information, but “you can’t replace the EPUB file after publishing” (Spotify Help: Editing a title). Get the text right first. If creation fails, the project shows a failed status in your Catalog and Spotify emails you; you can try again.
The Limits You Need to Know Before You Start
Spotify’s limits page is worth reading twice, because two of the rules are easy to trip over (Spotify Help: Understanding audiobook creation limits):
- Five projects per account, and slots are permanent. “Each project counts as 1 slot, including published audiobooks [and] draft projects,” and “once a slot is used, it’s permanent. Deleting a draft or unpublishing an audiobook doesn’t free up a slot.” Do not start a project to “see what it sounds like.” Every experiment costs one of your five books.
- Four generations per project. “Each audiobook project allows up to 4 generations,” and that count includes generations made after publishing, such as a voice change. Do your pronunciation work in the preview stage: Spotify’s preview page says you can regenerate chapter previews “as many times as needed before publishing,” and the four-generation count applies to the full audiobook.
- 500,000 characters per manuscript. Long epics may need to be split, or narrated another way.
- One voice per book. There is no multi-voice cast option at the time of writing.
- English and EPUB only. No PDF or Word upload, no other languages yet.
Authors who want more than five audiobooks are told to contact Spotify for Authors support; there is no published price for extra slots. You must also agree to Spotify’s Audiobook Creation Opt In Terms of Use before using the tools; read them for the rights you grant.
How Do Royalties Work on a Spotify-Made Audiobook?
The tool itself is free, and Spotify says in its FAQ that Spotify for Authors is “non-exclusive, giving you complete control over your audiobook.” You are paid the same way as any other self-published audiobook on Spotify for Authors.
Spotify’s help pages describe two royalty streams: “à la carte audiobooks on Spotify,” which are direct purchases by listeners, and “audiobooks included in Spotify Premium plans,” which are paid from streams by Premium subscribers (Spotify Help: Royalty reports). Spotify does not publish the percentages on those pages. According to Reedsy’s review of Spotify for Authors and Voices by INaudio, published September 10, 2025, before the creation tools existed, à la carte sales pay the author 50 percent of the suggested retail price they set, Premium listening pays a pro-rata share of a monthly revenue pool based on your share of total listening, and there is no distribution cut on Spotify itself. Treat those figures as the current industry reading, and confirm them in your own dashboard before you plan a budget around them.
If you also want your audiobook on Audible, Apple Books, Google Play, Kobo and library services, Spotify for Authors offers that through its Voices by INaudio integration, which lets you “distribute your audiobooks to other retail and library stores – including Audible and Apple Books” from one upload (Spotify Help: Spotify for Authors and Voices by INaudio). One caution: Spotify’s Creation Tools pages say you can choose “Manage distribution on INaudio” from your Catalog once the audiobook is live (Spotify Help: Publishing your audiobook), but two of its general help pages state “We don’t currently share audiobooks with digital voice narration to referral partners” (Spotify Help: Digital voice narration). Check the option in your own dashboard before counting on Audible or Apple Books sales. Reedsy reports that INaudio keeps 20 percent of net royalties from those other stores. Whether every retailer accepts digitally narrated titles is a separate question, and one to check per store.
Spotify Audiobook Creation Tools vs Amazon KDP Virtual Voice
Amazon offers its own computer-generated narration, Audiobooks with Virtual Voice, in an invite-only beta (KDP Help: Getting started with virtual voice). If your ebook is already on KDP you may be wondering which to use. Here is how the two compare on the published terms.
| Spotify Audiobook Creation Tools | Amazon KDP Virtual Voice | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, up to 5 audiobooks | Free “at this time” (invite-only beta) |
| Who | US self-published authors, English | Invite-only beta, US marketplace, eligible KDP eBooks |
| Source file | EPUB you upload | Your existing KDP eBook |
| Voices | ElevenLabs models, one per book | 80 voices in 7 languages, can vary by chapter |
| Sold where | Spotify, plus other stores via Voices by INaudio | Amazon, Audible, Alexa, Amazon Music Unlimited |
| Royalty on direct sales | 50% of your set price (industry reporting) | 40% of list price |
| Price range | You set the suggested price | $3.99 to $14.99 |
| Exclusive? | No | Not stated; an existing Audible audiobook makes the eBook ineligible |
| Label | “Narrated by Digital Voice” | “Clearly labeled” as virtual voice |
Sources: Spotify’s pages linked above and KDP Help: Audiobooks with virtual voice.
The practical answer for many authors is both. Amazon reaches Audible listeners, Spotify reaches its own audience, and neither tool asks for exclusivity of the kind an ACX royalty-share deal does. Order matters: KDP says an audiobook published outside Audible does not affect Virtual Voice eligibility, but an existing Audible audiobook does (KDP Help: Virtual voice eligibility), so if you distribute the Spotify version to Audible through INaudio first, Amazon may then refuse a Virtual Voice edition. Reedsy also notes INaudio cannot send a title to Audible unless it already exists as an ebook on Amazon.
Should You Use a Digital Voice at All?
A free audiobook is not automatically a good idea. Three honest points before you upload:
Listeners can tell, and Spotify tells them. Every audiobook made with the tool carries the “Narrated by Digital Voice” label. For nonfiction, business books, reference and many genre titles that is fine; readers who want the information are glad to have it in audio. For literary fiction, humor and anything that lives on performance, a human narrator still wins, and our guide to choosing an audiobook narrator explains what to look for.
The narration is only as good as the manuscript. A digital voice reads exactly what is on the page, typos included. If your book has not had a professional edit, the audiobook will broadcast every rough sentence. Our editing and proofreading service is the step to take before formatting for audio.
Spotify is a big audience, but not the whole market. TechCrunch reported at the May 2026 announcement that Spotify’s audiobook catalog stood at 700,000 titles and that listening hours were up 60 percent year over year. That is a real market, and audiobooks are the format many authors skip. For the money side, see our comparison of audiobooks vs ebooks. For the full production route, including human narration and ACX, see our guide to converting your book into an audiobook.
One more planning note: the audiobook is a separate product from your ebook, so it does not touch Amazon’s new KDP title creation limit. You can add audio to a back-catalog title in a week when your KDP slots are already spoken for.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the questions authors are asking about Spotify’s free audiobook tool.
Is Spotify’s audiobook creation tool really free?
Yes. Spotify says the tools are “free for up to 5 audiobooks” per Spotify for Authors account. You need a validated payment profile to access them, and Spotify earns from the listening and sales revenue it shares with you. Authors who want more than five audiobooks are told to contact Spotify for Authors support.
Who can use Spotify Audiobook Creation Tools in 2026?
Self-published authors in the United States with an English-language book, an EPUB file of 500,000 characters or fewer, and a completed payment profile in Spotify for Authors. Publishers, non-US authors and non-English books are not eligible at the time of writing.
Do I have to be exclusive to Spotify?
No. Spotify’s FAQ says “Spotify for Authors is non-exclusive, giving you complete control over your audiobook.” You can distribute the same audiobook elsewhere, and Spotify for Authors offers wider distribution through its Voices by INaudio integration.
How long does it take for the audiobook to go live?
Generating the narration takes minutes. Spotify’s help page says “most audiobooks are published within 72 hours” after you submit.
Can I fix a mispronounced name after publishing?
Yes, but it costs a generation. After publishing you can change the digital voice or update pronunciations, and either change means creating a new version, which uses a generation. Metadata edits do not. Every project allows four generations in total, so review pronunciations and chapter previews carefully before you publish.
Does Spotify tell listeners the narrator is AI?
Yes. Spotify says any audiobook made with the tool “will be clearly labeled for listeners on the platform,” and its help page names the label as “Narrated by Digital Voice.”
Is Spotify’s tool better than Amazon’s KDP Virtual Voice?
They serve different stores. Spotify’s tool uses ElevenLabs voices, publishes to Spotify and can distribute wider through Voices by INaudio; Amazon’s Virtual Voice turns an existing KDP eBook into an audiobook sold on Amazon, Audible and Alexa at a 40 percent royalty. Many authors will use both, after checking each platform’s current rules on the same title.
