Amazon KDP update September 2026: the new limit of 2 new titles per format per week, from Kinetic Digital Publishers
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The KDP title creation limit is Amazon’s rule, in force since September 21, 2026, that a Kindle Direct Publishing account can create no more than two new titles per book format (Kindle ebook, paperback and hardcover) each week. The allowance resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC, replaces the previous limit of ten per format, and does not affect books that are already published. That is the whole rule in one paragraph. The rest of this guide, from Kinetic Digital Publishers, explains what it means for your next launch.

If you logged in to your KDP Bookshelf this week and hit a wall creating a new book, you are not alone. The announcement was a short notice in the KDP Community forum and a one-sentence change to a help page, so it was easy to miss.

This guide explains the new KDP title creation limit in plain English: what the rule says, what does and does not count against it, who it affects, and how to plan a launch under it. It also covers the other KDP change from this month that works in your favor, the new 18-month ebook pre-order window.

Every fact below comes from Amazon’s own help pages or from named industry reports, and we link to each one so you can check it yourself.

What Is the New KDP Title Creation Limit?

Short answer: Since September 21, 2026, Amazon KDP lets each account create up to two new titles per book format per week . Ebooks, paperbacks and hardcovers each get their own allowance of two. The counter resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC. Books you have already published are not affected.

Amazon’s help page puts it this way: “To ensure a positive experience for all authors, we limit the number of titles you can create at the same time to 2 per book format each week.” (KDP Help: Create a Book)

The previous limit was ten titles per format per week, so this is an 80 percent reduction. Publishers Lunch reported the change on September 24, 2026, quoting Amazon’s forum notice: “We are updating the title creation limits on KDP to help maintain a positive publishing experience for all authors.” Publishers Lunch summarized the cap as two titles a week across all formats; Amazon’s own help page says two per book format, and this post follows Amazon’s wording.

What Counts as “Creating a Title”?

The limit applies to the moment you click Create on your Bookshelf and start a new title, not to the moment you press Publish. Independent reports from PublishFlow and Vappingo both read the rule the same way, and it matches the wording on Amazon’s help page, which talks about titles you “create.”

In practice that means:

  • Starting a new ebook, paperback or hardcover uses one slot in that format’s weekly allowance of two.
  • Editing a live book does not appear to use a slot. Changing your description, keywords, categories, price, or uploading a corrected manuscript or cover happens on an existing title.
  • Drafts you created before September 21 already exist, so finishing and publishing them is not blocked by the new rule.

Amazon has not published a detailed FAQ on edge cases, so treat the second and third points as the current industry reading rather than a guarantee. If a specific action matters to your launch, ask KDP Support before you rely on it.

Who Does the KDP Limit Affect?

For most authors, it does not. If you write one book a year, or even one a quarter, two new titles per format per week is far more room than you will ever use.

The authors who feel it are:

  1. 1Rapid-release fiction authors who like to load an entire series onto the Bookshelf in one sitting. You can still do that, just two books per week per format.
  2. 2Low-content and no-content publishers producing journals, planners, notebooks and coloring books at scale. This is the group hit hardest, and the group most commentators expect to feel it most.
  3. 3Publishers of many language editions , since each translation is a separate title.
  4. 4Small presses and service companies that publish on behalf of several authors from one KDP account.

Amazon has not said which behavior prompted the cut. Its only public reason is the one-line statement about “a positive publishing experience for all authors.” Some industry commentary links the move to the volume of mass-produced and AI-generated books, although Amazon itself has not made that connection. KDP’s content guidelines already require you to tell Amazon when a book contains AI-generated text, images or translations.

How to Plan Book Launches Under the New KDP Rule

The limit is a scheduling constraint, not a ceiling on how many books you can publish in a year. Two titles per format per week is still roughly a hundred complete books a year. Here is how to work with it.

1. Create the Title Early, Publish When You Are Ready

Because the limit is on creation, not publication, you can create the KDP entry for next month’s book this week, even if your files are not finished. The draft sits on your Bookshelf until you upload the final manuscript and cover. Spread creation across weeks and the limit disappears as a problem.

2. Use the New 18-Month Pre-Order Window

This is the KDP change nobody is complaining about. Since September 2, 2026, you can set up a Kindle ebook pre-order up to 18 months ahead of release (KDP Community announcement, summarized by Self-Publishing with Dale). Under the updated pre-order help page, pre-orders created on or after that date can be postponed twice, for up to six months past the original date. Pre-orders created before September 2 keep the old rule of one postponement of up to 30 days.

A pre-order both creates the title, using one of this week’s slots, and starts collecting sales before launch. For a series, that means you can set each book’s release date months ahead, two ebooks a week, and the launches themselves never collide with the limit.

Two cautions. First, canceling a second pre-order suspends your ability to create or postpone pre-orders for six months, according to industry reporting on the change. Set dates you can keep. Second, the 18-month window is for ebooks only. You can schedule a paperback or hardcover release date, but KDP still does not offer true customer pre-orders for print.

3. Get Your Files Finished Before You Touch the Bookshelf

Every author who has published on KDP knows the temptation to create the title first and fix the interior later. Under the new rule, that habit costs you a weekly slot for a book that is nowhere near ready. A finished, print-ready interior and a cover built to KDP’s exact template mean the title you create this week is the one you publish this week. If formatting is where your projects stall, our book formatting service and book cover design service turn a finished manuscript into KDP-ready files.

4. Batch by Format, Not by Book

If you release in all three formats, a useful week looks like this: create the ebook and paperback for Book A and Book B, then create both hardcovers the following week. You publish two full books every two weeks with no slot ever wasted, and the paperback and ebook go live together so your Amazon page shows both from day one.

5. Put the Saved Time Into Marketing

Nearly every author who publishes fast admits marketing is the part that slips. If the new limit forces a week between releases, spend it on the launch itself: your Amazon description, your keyword research, your author page, your email list and your review outreach. Our book marketing service handles that work for authors who would rather be writing.

Does the Limit Change Whether KDP Is Still Worth It?

No. Amazon is still the main storefront for most self-published authors, and two of this year’s KDP changes improved the deal for authors: the 18-month pre-order window described above, and, since July 7, 2026, a higher maximum list price for the 70 percent ebook royalty option, up from $9.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com (KDP Help: eBook List Price Requirements). We covered the broader picture in our post on the future of self-publishing in 2026.

What the limit does signal is that Amazon wants fewer, better books on its shelves. For an author who takes the time to edit, format and market properly, that is good news. There should be a little less noise on the shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions authors are asking about the new KDP rules.

How many books can you publish on KDP per week in 2026?

You can create up to two new titles per book format per week. Because Kindle ebooks, paperbacks and hardcovers each have their own allowance, one account can start two complete books in all three formats in the same week. The limit resets every Sunday at 12:00 AM UTC.

When did the KDP 2-titles-per-week limit start?

The new limit took effect on September 21, 2026. Amazon announced it in the KDP Community forum, and by the next day its “Create a Book” help page showed the new wording. The previous limit was ten titles per format per week.

Does the KDP limit apply to books I have already published?

No. Amazon’s rule applies to creating new titles. Books that are already live, and updates to those books such as new descriptions, keywords, prices or corrected files, are not affected.

Can I ask Amazon for an exception to the title creation limit?

Amazon’s help page previously invited publishers who “expect to regularly create a large number of titles” to contact KDP for an exception. That sentence was removed when the new limit took effect, according to PublishFlow’s comparison of the page versions. You can still contact KDP Support, but there is no published exception process at the time of writing.

How far ahead can I set a KDP pre-order now?

Since September 2, 2026, Kindle ebook pre-orders can be set up to 18 months in advance, and pre-orders created on or after that date can be postponed twice for up to six months in total. Print books can be given a release date but do not have true customer pre-orders on KDP.

Why did Amazon reduce the KDP publishing limit?

Amazon’s only stated reason is “to help maintain a positive publishing experience for all authors.” It has not published data on what prompted the change. Industry commentary links it to the volume of mass-produced and AI-generated low-content books uploaded to the store.
